  1. Does any one have a printable I can use to make 4d cubes and flats? I have base ten units and ten bars, but really don't want to purchase the cubes and flats, as well. I have searched the internet, but have only found worksheets. I am looking for something that can be folded into a cube for the thousands cube. Thanks. Danielle
  2. Renai, Have you used the R&S Spanish? What do you think about them? We are going a new route next year, with all my dc attending B&M schools, the youngrst at a Mandarin immersion school (k). I would like to after school in Spanish to make sure he and my ten year old do not lose fluency and improve their grammar. Danielle

Because schools buy textbooks but students don't always read them. Many a semester there are students who don't even crack open a book.

Well, its great news for 2nd hand book buyers--you can get a classic book in great condition at an excellent price.

See? The glass is half full!

  4. Definitely not! I was told to just put a comma where ever I would take a natural breadth. Well, I used to talk a mile a minute and rarely came up for air. Any ideas how that worked out? To this day I am a comma abuser. It has gotten better since doing R&S with my dc, but I still find myself doubting and running over to check the text book at times. I really think most peopke need to i ternalize comma rules.
  5. Thanks your responces. You have all given me much to think about, and I think it will help us to make amuch more informed decision with our son.
  6. I noticed about three days ago that, when I click on view new content, I get nothing. Specifically, the web page says "sorry, no new co tent foind." While I enjoy the forums, I am pretty sure I haven't read everything. I am using an Ipad. Safari 600.1.4 on IOS. Do I need to list the user agent stream as well? Thank you.
  7. Thank you for starting this thread. I really need to start doing the above, a day for me. Or at least first half hour of the day for me. I thought sending my oldest kuds to school would make my life easy peasy, but I find myself always on the move and stressed. Jogging is the only time I feel completely free and without all the weight on my shoulders. As far as staying healthy, I stopped drinking soda and other sugary drinks a few tears ago and never looked back. I stck to water and mineral water. My skin thanks me for it.
  8. Ok, multi quote is not working for me again. I'll try to do my best to address as many of your great responses as I can. First offf, Spycar's son is entering middle school next year. 😱 Wow! Time does fly. I think Sadie summed up how I feel. I understand that some parents may encourage their dc to avoid certain books but feel I should have the right to allow my child to read those same books. In addition, I expect some level of maturity from my children by the time they hit high school. Another poster mentioned that the had read The Glass Castle and would not want their teen to read it, and I respect that. Each family and child is different. I have chosen to allow my son to read it, as I feel he can truly handle it. I know he will be turned off by the cursing, but not shocked. Mostly, I know my son would feel 100% comfortable coming to me and discussing the sensitive topics found in the book. In recent months he has come to me to discuss many sensitive topics and really doesn't seem bothered to discuss these things with any adult. I do agree that there should be alternatives for those who feel strongly about a book and would prefer an different book. I especially feel that steps need to be taken to protect those that may have suffered some of the things that occur in a few of these books. My comment about seeking out banned books wasn't because I simply like to read things someone else disliked. It had more to do with the fact that the banned books list (see Spycar's list) contains many examples of fine literature. I also think it is interesting to read them first hand while considering the historical significance or reasoning behind the banning. I am not really a fan of many of the pop-culture type books most people would recommend to me. I may read The Hunger Games because I prefer to read a book before watching the movie, but prefer books with more depth. As for 50 Shades of Gray, I haven't read the book nor have I seen the movie. I guess it just didn't. Interest me at all.
  9. I am curious where the hive stands on this topic. Is it ever ok to ban books in high school? Is it reasonable to expect ninth graders to be able to read about and maturely discuss sensitive topics such as r@pe, inc3$t, and p3dophili@? (Sorry, trying to avoid random google trolls) I just finished reading "The Glass Castle" and found the story tragic yet fascinating. I also found out that parents had demanded the book be removed from required reading lists for ninth and tenth grade classes. I have a tenth grader whom I feel could handle the content. While we are on the subject, I need sone book suggestions for my own reading. Maybe I'll focus on banned books for a month or two. So pkease offer you suggestions. Thanks
  10. You may want to check and see if your area has a KPBS Spanish channel. My ds watches Wild Krats and Callou in Spanish via Netflix. I also allow him to watch word girl is Englsh (he speaks Spanish) he has already begun using English phrases, despite the fact that none of us speak English to him. HTH
  11. I hope the tretinoin works well for you. just remember to use a very small amount. Pea size is about right. Don't increase the percantage too quuckly. You may see some dryness, but it will pass. In that case you can lesson the number of days that you use it and increase every other week. Be sure to use sun block everyday and reapply often. Danielle
  12. Have you checked your local library? I find lots of them there.
  13. Call me vain, but I have thought about looking into this as a preventative measure. I don't want to have a deep scowl line, but I am concerned about looking stiff. Thinking about it is as far as I have gotten. Have you tried tretinoin for the scars you are concerned about? I had acne scars on my back, and tretinoin helped.
  14. Any ideas about whether this is a generational thing or a result of teaching methods at schools today? I think review days before tests are pretty common at our local high schools. I am currently taking some online CC classes for a certicate program. Our professor provides study guides, which have made my life so much easier. It is the first thing I down load every week. I know other students have complained about their length, but I have felt well prepared for every test. I say, provide a study guide. Students who actually care about their grade will complete and study it.
  15. Do you speak/read/write Spanish? That will likely help others in giving you recommendations. I will repeat what I always say. Switch TV/movies/music to Spanish. It's the closest thing you can get to immersion and younget children tend to pick it up quickly. After some word study, find easy books in written and audio format. Listen to the book while following along. Do copy work from the book and dictation with the audio version. Find someone they can practice conversation with once they begin to understand what they hear. Beginning in middle school you can start a more grammar focused approach, but I used the above to teach five kids English and Spanish to my oldest, who would flat out refuse to speak it until about 11-12. Granted, we lived in Mexico at the time, but he did not attend school with Spanish speakers and lived with people who spoke English. I have not heard anything positive about Rosetta Stone. If the above seems to daunting, many people seem to like Destinos. HTH
  16. I have never heard of this. My step mother makes something called doce de leite in the oven, similar to flan, with cans of sweet condensed milk. She also uses them to make sweet rice with milk, but I hadn't heard of this. Do you eat it like pudding? Off to do sone googling.
  17. I don't think this is an MYOB situation, because the mother has told you about it. Therefore, she has made it your business. At worst, it is a form of neglect on her part, and she maybe reaching out for help or reassurance that it is Ok. Obviously, you do not believ it is ok. So maybe a small nudge is in order. When I was pregnant with my now four year old, I was put on complete bed test. at times, i was able to set a table up bext the the bed and do WWE and Story of the World with my dc. Some times they did SM !ath, which orivided me with things to grade, and we did flash cards and chess. It sounds like much more than what actually got done. I eventually had a c-section and had to rest mych more than I did with my previous children. Starting back up happened very slowly. I began having the kds work an SOTW three days a week and Math daily. After these things were getting done consitantly for a few weeks, we added another subject, and continued in the same way. Maybe, the next time she brings it up, you could suggest she start up one subject with her dc. (Reading aloud 15 minutes is an easy thing to begin with.) ;) of course, she cannot start where they left off, that would surely set them up to fail. She would need to back track a bit. With your coxing, maybe she can get back at it, and her children can begin receiving the education they are entitled to. Just a thought. Danielle
  18. Aaah. I thought you were referring to me. This ^^^ makes sense. Thanks.
  19. I am curious howyou came to this guess. Was it just a guess or Was there more to it? I promise I am not being snarky, but curious to know what factored into that guess. Danielle
