http://www.michigandaily.com/opinion/02jesse-klein-relative-wealth16 Has this op/ed been discussed? I am still processing it, but am interested in what others think. I don't think what this young person describes is middle class, though. Danielle

Thank you!

Hello agan. I'll make my best attempt at answering everyone's questions. I really wish that multi-quote worked. Thank you, Seaconquest. My son has a friend who just went over yo surf and has been trying to get him to attend practice with him. It is quite far away from us, so we were on the fence. He may attend a few practices and speak to some other Surf players that we know, before he decides whether to attempt tryouts. After speaking to ds, it seems he enjoys being the starter but is ok with that changing as long as his skills will be improving. He laid out his goals, which look somethink like this... Increase level, make a high school varsity school team, continue increasing skills with hopes of getting looked at by colleges. Note: He is not depending on soccer for scholarships. He just hopes it will add to his application. Scholarships would be nice, though. He specifically said he would like to climb as high as possible, and does not mind his life consisting of soccer and school only, which it pretty much already is. Like any kid, he would love to go pro but is willing to become a scientist or actor and coach on the side. LOL His father and I want him to have fun. We want him to find a coach he meshes well with, because we know first hand that this will bring out the best in our son. I do not want a militant/screaming type of coach for my son. I know some people coach this way, just their personality, but my son needs someone who shows and instructs no belittling of any kind. We have some experience with coaches favoring one player, so will be looking out for that. As far as the teammates, humble and kind would be great, but who knows. Hubby definitely doesn't want a team that s cursing up a storm. Nart, My son just turned 15 in December. I understand there will be some changes in aging teams come 2016, but honestly don't quite understand it. We will definitely keep in mind the play time. He says he does't mind, but I would guess he doesn't want to be on the bench more than 3/4 of the game. With that in mind, I'll try to guide him. He has already been practicing with one team that he meshed well with. They offered him a spot immediately, but he does not know this yet. The coach has agreed not to tell him. If he chooses to go with this team, I want him to do tryouts and feel he had to work for the spot. We really want to teach my son to be humble, which can be diffcult at this age. Yes, we are in the San Diego area. May I ask what are the benefits, as you ladies see them, of big fish vs small fish? Basically, if your child is offered a spot on a team where you notice his level us right on par or exceeds the other players. Is it more likely you would have to search for another team sooner than later? Can a player still continue to grow in this situation, or is it better to be at the midlevel of skill for your team? Thanks again for all your help. Danielle

Thank you! I was just reading up on Albion last night. If I have any questions, I'll be sure to ask. Are you familiar with Surf? Danielle

Thank you everyone. You rach bring up sone excellent points. Linder's and Datgh, I will be sure to do this. At the moment, soccer is ds's only sport, but I know he is interested in doing other spirts on a recreational level and needs time for theatre. Of coarse, he has neen very ckear that soccer is a priority for him and he is willing to give up other activities if necessary. At the moment he practices with his team twice a week and and meets up with friends three times a week to practice skills and play scrimmages. Mermo, Ewe'll definately try to do this, especally the games. I have seen some kids and coaches completely change during heated games, so this is a great idea. Trulycrabby, We have been trying to do this, but people in the San Diego area seem to be pretty competitive and don't want to share. We have had luck speaking to families with kids older than ds. Xixstar, Ah yes, we've experienced this before. Not fun. Thanks. Ksva, I noticed you deleted, so I won't quate any if what you said. I did gind it very yseful and will keep it all in mind. Calandalsmom, I am not too concerned about the aggressive play, since my son grew up playing street and club soccer in Mexico. The cost did give me pause, but dh and I decided that we are willing to support ds as long as he is committed. I am sure my son can play at club level. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, everyone. Ds is pretty intense about soccer and is really looking forward to this next year. He plays soccer, fut7, and futsal, so he keeps busy. Indoor soccer starts next week and we'll be juggling it with tryouts. Hopefully I can get enough coffee. :) Danielle

Hello everyone. I have mentioned in the past that my boys play soccer, something they became very passionate about while living in Mexico. Since moving back to the states, two have been playing in a recreational league (AYSO). Since there doen't seem to be a team option for my now 15y/o in his current region, he expressed interest in trying out for club. It is now the beginning of tryout season and he has been invited to practice with a couple of different teams to get a feel for things and do tryouts in March/April. I know we are going to have to make some big time commitments and spend a good sum of money, so I am looking for any advice on how to make the right decision when the time comes. What things should we be looking for? Any red flags I should keep my eyes open for? Thanks. Danielle

Thanks for the responses. To clarify, her taxes are done. She was charged $600 for one child. This is much more than the ACA info made it sound like it would be. As I mentioned, she does not make 60,000 a year. I thought it might be a mistake, but have found multiple families that filed in the last few days and were fined in the $6-800 range. These are not high income families. Some have dc that qualify for Medical but not the adults. That would put them at the lower end of a middle class income. These are people that qualify for the child and work tax credit, which is for lower income people. Most have explained to me that the cost of insurance would put them in a situation of food vs insurance. It seems, after looking over things, some could apply for waivers but may not get them. I am just surprised at the amount of these fines. For the families I have spoken to, tax returns buy clothing for the year and pay for car repairs, etc. I think they jst fond themselves in that gray area. They aren't high enough income so that buying insurance is not a huge strain and not low enough that they get huge subsidies.

Sorry, I explained this up thread. Yes, according to the rules she should qualify. That does not mean it is always the way it goes. I went through it myself with myltiple kids and multiple aide workers. They are working on it, though. Danelle

There s the difficulty. It's a grandchild. it varies by social worker. I was able to get Medical for my SIL, when raising her. Then my BZiZl's arrived and we were denied Medical for them flat out. We were just above the piverty line and forced to pay cash for medical care. Supposedly the rules are that ou income cannot count for children not legaly ours, but we were still denied. So it really deoends on the worker. They do make it difficult when the child is not yours. Danielle

Theoretically, yes. unfortunately, at our local office it is not that cut a dry. She is working on it, though. I am more curious about how the fees are calculated. It seems like an awful hardship for those barely clinging to middle class.

Hello everyone. I have been reading the info availabe online about the fine that will be enforced starting with the 2014 taxes but don't think I am understanding it. Is their anyone that can explain it to me in an easy to understand way. I thoulght it was a fine of roughly $100 per person. I understand it is a percentage of income or x amount/person, but the ampunts I have heard from people have bee much higher than I expected. I just spoke to one person who has 4 dependents, besides themselves, and makes about $36.000 per year. One of the children is not hers and she was unable to add that child to her insurance. She was fined $600. Now, we are in California and $36,000 a year is not a huge amount for a family of 5, so 600 seems steep. So, can I get a gentle explanation? Danielle

Budgie=parakeet in US? So parakeet smugglers? -
I think it depends on what state. In Calfornia the cost is a lot lower than other states. When I took cc classes the cost was $11/unit. I paid the first year by working as a hostess. I was a young pregnant mother. Dh and I were definately low income. At the time I would have qualified for every type of aide available but knew nothing about the process. I don't think I could have paid fees and books in another state. Danielle

I have four boys (15,14,10,4). The oldest wrestles and has practice 5 days/week for 3 hours. The second plays soccer, with practice for two hours twice a week, 90 minute games on week-ends, and infornal get togethers with his soccer buddies almost every non-practice day. The only way I can stretch a pound is by always serving two sides, beans and rice or veggies and pasta, etc. They are growing and active, so I'd say this is necesary and their pediatrician agrees. I also tend to cook meat with veggies tossed in. For example, I would have cooked that pound of ground meat with diced onion, diced tomato, one small potato, a can of corn, two winter squash, and even a handful of peas. My family eats spicy food, so I would even add jalepenos cut into strips. In addition to the sides, I often serve a soup as a starter. Lentil soup and fideo are my kids favorites, but also veggie soup. I do not serve any noodle based soup for DH or it is a smaller portion. He is not as active as my dc. They also eat corn tortillas with most meal. Flour tortillas are a rare in our house.

Thank you, everyone. Yes, it is.

I don't eat single serve yogurt. I buy larger tubs and save them. When I head to México, I give them away. People use them in place of tupperware. Danielle

Well, knowing that I can hack it is encouraging. I don't mind doing that and woukd prefer being able to use the coffee of my choice. I gave in and tried sone coffee a coupke of minutes ago. Definately not hot enough, but maybe I cold deal with it. I like it boiling hot. ;). Thanks everyone. Danielle

I walked downstairs this morning and found a brand new Kureg 2.0, a couple bxes of K-cups, and a kureg coffee thermos/mug. I am a big coffee gal and DH knows this. I assume he and my boys had that in mind when they picked out this gift. The machine itself is beautiful, does single cup, carafe, tea and hot cocoa, but I can't even bring myself to try it out. Honestly, the idea of throwing away all those empty K-cups and the cost. Plus, I like my coffee VERY hot, but read online that the Kureg machines don't provide that. Their idea for a coffee maker really was spot on, but just not the right one. I feel terrible, as I am sure my kids helped to pick it out and DH obviously put some thought into it. Now, how to break it to my little men and what to get instead. Danielle

Help with a couple Physics questions
Ohdanigirl replied to Ohdanigirl's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Thank you both. The visial really helped. I think we just needed to see a wirjed example n order to get it. -
Can a kind soul help explain this to ds and I? If you could PM me or if you prefer giving an explanation down thread with some changes in the numbers. I believe some schools use these worksheets and don't want to contribute to any cheating. Ds understands how to figure out net force when you have something like this... 4. 5 <----------O------------>. But not when there are forces on three different sides. He won't see the person helping him with physics until Saturday.
