  1. SL is e.asy to do, I have never understood the gripes. Core C = morning read a poem/ aseop fable. ( they alternate daily) After lunch plop on the couch/ before bed and read a chapter of your read aloud End of the day read history, add timeline figure to book, plot associated locations on map, sing geo song....have dd read her chapter... I think people look at how many books you are reading at once and forget that it was designed as an all inclusive curriculum.
  2. I ordered the CHOW lesson planner& workbook, art with mati& dada on discovery education streaming, DE science techbook and all kinds of other stuff to sl. Homechool in the woods looks good to add too, draw and write through history maks for great drawings and copywork. Rso science is very hands on... drove me nuts but dd liked it.
  3. Discovery education techbook (national standards) $50 love it!
  4. We skipped that one it was aweful! I couldn't stand it. Dd ended up memorizing a two page one in A Childs Garden of Versus instead LOL
  5. Kids that read well will have horrible spelling unless they are drilled. AAS is awesome and we love it however, I chose not to start spelling until third grade. If you are going to start WWE give her the plavemnt test first, she is not likely ready for level two. I would start with level 1 and FLL2. Just my opinion. I love TWTM products and swear by the book LOL.
  6. Have you thought of just practicing for a year or two and then trying something like Easy Grammar Plus?
  7. Why don't you school year round and break for the winter when you have the blahs.... if you feel like you should be homeschooling do it... but make a decision and stick to it.
  8. I have used math in focus since level 1 and I do not intend to use anything else until highschool
  9. So, I am not sure how well you do with going with the flow but... Combined: Science: The Story Book of Science and The Secret of Everyday Things are very cute. They were written years ago so they have some mentions of God that you could easily edit if you read ahead the night before. However, If you read one chapter of these per week and spend the rest of the week doing related activities or research online that would be simple. Another option would be the Discovery Education Science Techbook for $50 You have access to all the levels and can really use it for both kiddos. Your older one can work through on his own and later you can go with your little one. History: A Child's History of the World is great for a 9 year old. I use the workbook for the enrichment activities and the lesson planner for comprehension questions. There is some fill in the blank outlining in the Workbook too. You could use it for copy work or how to write an outline or turning an outline into a summary and that would take care of writing. If you wanted to add in Readers/Read Alouds I always recommend the books that Sonlight suggests because my dd has always loved them. I think there were 2 she didn't like and she has been all the way through Core A, B and C and grade 1-4/5 readers. Art/Music/Scientists: Alternate between various Meet the World's Greatest series books and google the musical compositions & works of art online to listen and enjoy discussing. Individually: LA: (readers & writing see above) I don't believe in spelling until 3rd grade & I use AAS but maybe using something like Modern Curriculum Press Workbooks or McGraw Hill has free ones online. grammar- I love FLL however, McGraw hill also has those free or you could do like many folks do and let them acquire it through reading and teach it formally in Jr. High with a program like Easy Grammar Plus. vocabulary-look up words in the dictionary as they don't understand them in their other reading Math: I don't think anyone should not do math. I think it is an important skill to practice. I have read about all different methods. I do believe it is possible to push a kid to far to fast and I do think you can end up holding an advanced kid back if you don't give them the tools to dive in. BUT at this age you could simply work on mastering their skills Not that you have to use this or even will, but I think you can take the suggestions and apply them to any book really. You could read you science/history aloud and dive in deeper with further research and projects. You don't need to use any "program" perse just have fun and get to a place where everyone loves it. Maybe if your little one likes school so much you could have extensions of each subject in the way of activities for him and the older can choose to or not to participate. I wish you luck!
  10. I like it. I think its best to break thechapters down further for a younger kid. It also helps to have the lesson planner and workbook for the enrichment activities, intro, questions and review. It is written for a forth grader. It clicks with dd much better this year than last. I liked SOTW better for the littles though.
  11. We just did the opposite and moved into a large space. However, in my former 1,000 sq ft home I had Billy Bookcases from Ikea exploding with books, & 2 2x4 expedits that I laid side by side and used as a wall length buffet/ docking station & printer holder. I would just use the laptop at the table. My fridge was white and a great marker board.
  12. Fyi when you drop your caloric intake below 1200 (the amount you body needs to lay in bed and do nothing all day) your body goes into starvation mode and stores calories as fat because it doesn't know when it will get food again. So that is probably a significant reason you hit a plateau. Kuddos on the weight loss though. Unrefined coconut oil is the best for you.
  13. My nine year old wears justice and I haven't had an issue. Its also the only place I can find "fashionable" longer shorts. They only have 2/3 different ones at a time so I usually size her in store and order online.
  14. Thank you SO much that is what I thought! Maybe I can get with you later and compare chapters LOL!
  15. I have not settled on one all inclusive program for LA because nothing seems to be exactly what I want although K12's Independent Study option for LA seems to be close and I may go that route again next year. We shall see. I have also considered Moving Beyond the Page and to be perfectly honest she gets a lot out of them but those units take my dd so long that there is not much time for anything else. At the 9-11 level MBTP is written to the student though and that makes it very tempting. However, I am interested to see what others post here so I am following. If it helps at all I am using: Sonlights Readers 4/5-With copywork TWTM style (or sometimes I will use copywork from science or history instead). First Language Lessons 4- Parent Intensive but great spiral grammar, I really wish this series continued through HS. All About Spelling 3- Again Very parent intensive. Handwriting without Tears 4- She does this on her own. I printed off the Sonlight suggested schedule and she follows it. Wordly Wise 4- This could be independent but my child thrives on attention so we do it orally. Creative Writer Level 1 (PHP)- She does this independently but slightly directed. For example it is a 5th grade curriculum so we spend about two weeks in each week where she will do additional "projects" to cement the ideas. So far this has been pretty fun for her but she also enjoys being creative. We read the assignment over one or two days and then other days are used for completing suggested assignments.
  16. Anyone care to take a moment to tell me if the chapter entitled "Along the Coast of East Africa" is in the original version of A Child's History of the World or if it is one of the additional ones in the reprint? I had compiled a list of the differing chapters but its seems to have been lost in our move. This Chapter is boring me to death and it reads as if the information was forced into the book unlike most of the other chapters written by Hillyer. I would like to just skip the chapters that were not originally included but now I don't have my list :( TIA!
  17. Okay. now that I have read other posts I don't feel so bad. I spend about $2k in the beginning of the year. Then I spend money throughout the year on books, ink, paper, art supplies, science supplies, activities, dance, trips etc. 1 kid but MOST of the stuff I buy I will use for my little one, I just buy the extra workbook or replacement sheets now that way if something changes or is revised by then I am still covered with what I own.
  18. My dd loved mr.poppers penguins, frindle, akimbo, sign of the beaver, stepping stones classics, the hundred dresses, more I'm sure but I am in bed and that's what I remember.
