  1. We have used 7-9 Water Cycle. With the science I think it is more about content and activities. I want yo get my daughter all MBTP but its hard to justify when I already own all of the Sonlight progam and it was gifted to me.
  2. You sound like my friend! Here are my thoughts. Everyone is different, and there are a million different curricula out there. It sounds like your goal is to love the classics. So why not just aim for that a little at a time. Get the abriged version of books at varying levels, classic starts from b&n or stepping stone classics. If he lives thatversion then try the actual classic. Personally, I love Sonlight and TWTM. I think of books as adventures suresomeareeasy reads but did you enjoy it? Did you learn something you didn't know already? I think of TWTM as my map, my goal and I look at Sonlight as my gps planning the triip with fun stops along the way. Why SL versus something else? Most of the books are secular and there are a TONso its no biggy if we skip one or swap it. Its like pulling up to jason's deli and seeing five guys across the street. Both will nourish you. What you eat orread is up to you. Sorry for typos I am on a tablet.
  3. I recommend they Well Trained Mind if you don't already have it. It is my go to resource. For the older girls have you thought about math u see? Saxon has a remedial phonics program too for grades 4-6. We use All About Spelling but that could get pricey. Although, if you got just the teachers book for all the levels and just read it together that might work. Then you could get the stundent pages and kit when your little guy goes through. We are going to be doing WWS when we get to that level so I cannot advise against that. There is a method to the program but you have to follow through to reap the reward, same with any program really. Exercises in English/Grammar Ace/Winston Grammar. If I were still a Christian I would use Apologia's exploring creation books. I was homeschooled with them in HS and they made Chemistry easy! Add fun to them with kits or projects. Yes! That test will tell you wherr your children stand academically across the board.
  4. We use sonlight BUT we stick to the upper end of the age recommendations, dd did. Core B at 8 and C at 9. Last year she read the 3rd grade readers this year the 4/5 readers. She has loved all the books, we didn't finish Strawberry girl but I have it on audio for the car, Ginger Pye we did as a read aloud dd loved it I hated it (we have an older core c.) Keep in mind als A Childs History of the world was written for a 4th grader. I have pieced all my cores together for super cheap buy purchasing a used ig and getting the books used also.
  5. We use math in focus. This program has some word problems in each chapter as well as an entire chapter of word problems each level. The only thing I have added to this curriculum are game where the text has games for more than two players.
  6. We use sonlight! Moving beyond the page is secular. We use some of that too.
  7. Moving Beyond the Page & Sonlight are the two I know and love at least until SWB writes an entire curriculum. I usually piece together from my favorite resources.
  8. I have threatened ps many times and I need to stop. It really isn't an option for us at this time in our lives. DD doesn't want to go and she does fairly well most days. I just get overwhelmed with them home all day every day. I love it being with them and did the working mom thing so I know the difference and I know that is not what I want for our family. I am sure things will be better when we are all settled into our new place. I hope you boy eventually appreciates homeschooling.
  9. Sometimes, I wake up and I just don't want to school. I love homeschooling but the headache that comes with a screaming toddler just makes me want to let them both play all day so I don't have to hear her scream because someone is not giving her their undivided attention. Okay, it felt really good to let that out LOL.
  10. We already use A Child's History of the World. I have picked books from Ambleside online that I love and bought them. Some I keep in my diaper bag for when we are out I read them in the car. Both hubby and my dd's love when I read aloud to them. A Child's Geography of the World & The Storybook of Science are in there right now. Both have led to some great discussions especially ACHOG since some of the information is dated in comparison to modern technology. I love this method and I am pretty sure I am going to keep going with it. We are going to start the Nature Study on Fridays in the fall. We also purchased A Childs History of England to read over the summer per dd's request.
  11. We made up our own tune to the FLL list... She memorized it really quick
  12. can I just ask where the butter/oil idea in coffee comes from?
  13. I believe Sonlight's G and H are Highschool worthy or at least H is
  14. MCP has spelling Workbooks that are written directly to the student. Maybe that would be easier. My dd is 9 though and I have her doing 2/ 3 AAS levels per year. Last year (3rd) we did 1 and 2. In 4th we are doing 3 and 4 next year 5 & 6 and then 7. I plan on re using them with my youngest and any others that arrive. I don't think you should worry so much. I really like how it teaches "the rules" and I have noticed that as she gets older she remembers them and applies them more often. We do a lesson per day ( 2 per week) and the days in between we to the dictation sentences. I have tried other programs and she would whiz through them only to forget the rules a few weeks later. She is a reader so her spelling was pretty bad for words that "break the rules" she is getting much better.
  15. Secular Science has been hard for us and we are still at the Elementary level. We have been using Sonlight and Secularizing it but for the middle school years I plan on purchasing the "Advanced" K12 Science or Moving Beyond the Page. You could purchase some of the Moving Beyond the Page Science Units that pertain to her interests.
  16. My Lily (15 months old) is signing like crazy, steals all our books, and loves to sing our Song School Latin, and loves to do the phonics sounds her sister does when we do spelling. I am not sure how advanced I would say she is. I think it is just a matter of exposure. Other toddlers aren't necessarily exposed to the same things as toddlers with older siblings homeschooled.
  17. If you think that Athletica is pricey you won't like my advice either but just in case cause I also had the same reaction. I wear Lululemon. I run and do yoga and the CRB -cool racer back keeps in place nicely and many of their looser tops have draw string bottoms.
  18. We use and LOVE (even dd) Math in Focus. It goes up to 8th grade. I am not saying it is THE answer for everyone but it is Singapore Math with the text written to the student so it is not teacher intensive & there are transition books to help with switching from a different curriculum. We switched in second grade half way through our first year homeschooling but started using level 1b because she was already behind in math to begin with. You can buy just the text $25 & workbook $10 (There are two each per grade) until whenever you want to stop doing the math in your head to check it. I started buying the homeschool packages with 3rd grade just to make my life simpler. I love them. They have all the answers and basically scripted lessons. You can sample the whole thing for free online. Just click Mathematics and then Math in focus. Fill out the form as a homeschooler and in 2 min you have access http://forms.hmhco.com/virtualsampling/
  19. We went from FLL2 to FLL4 because of dd's age and grade and what I read in TWTM. DD is 9 going on 10 and has no issues with FLL4. She loves it. We do split the majority of lessons in half and do FLL 4 times per week. For 5th thru 8th we are going to be using Exercises in English 2013. http://loyolapress.com/exercises-in-english-2013-edition.htm Loyola press also puts out a program called Voyages in English which is writing and grammar. Both are secular and made for the ps systems (I callled because they are a catholic printing company.) They have substantial samples of each online and older copies of EIE are available through Rainbow Resources.
  20. Buy This http://www.sonlight.com/4RG.html and all the books in this http://www.sonlight.com/readers-4-5.html or just get the second if you like their LA. If you are not Christian do not get More Stories From Grandma's Attic. The rest are secular. Hope that helps :)
  21. earth balance red label! 1 15 oz tub equals 4 sticks (you always use slightly less substitute than butter and this ratio works perfect)
  22. Our Elementary LA: 2days - Handwriting without tears Step Lesson one day, Dictation until mastered (she basically masters each step in 2 days since I didn't start using it until 3rd grade)- All About Spelling In books 1 & 2 we did one lesson per day 3x per week with 3 & 4 we do half a lesson per day and we do lessons 4 days per week-First Language Lessons 1-4 (you could also start with 2 and work up) 2 reading comp days 2 copy work days - Writing With Ease Method applied to readers 5 days Sonlight Readers (by reading level) 5 days Wordly Wise Vocabulary (in 4th Grade we added in Vocabulary from Classical Roots as well)
  23. We sort of Sonlight. You can see in my signature line that I use many different things. I also have a little one she is almost exactly a year older than yours. I took 3 months off when I had her if that makes you feel better. I also wore her in a Moby wrap for school cause she refluxed so much when I would put her down. Now I struggle because she is a toddler...and I only have one older one to school. We also moved a lot in the past couple of years. In Nov 2011, July 2013 and Feb 2014. Now we are supposedly staying put for at least 3 years. We shall see. I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone!
