  1. There is a curriculum map at the bottom of the php page & the 2&4 recommendation is what is in twtm. Good luck
  2. I have never heard of 5 !!!!! What do u know??????
  3. Yea I was gonna mention the extra practice books.
  4. I stay away from conventions because of that! I am however a curriculum hoarder.
  5. Ok, it has taken me 4 days to read this thread lol! Thank you to those of you that actually broke down why you left Sonlight. I have so far loved it but I have also used it differently which has left me questioning whether I want to continue or go another route, especially since I will be finishing FLL this year. What didn't work for us: History Odyssey - I don't do well with reading chapters in books out of order. RSO Science- Great retention, dd loved it... I dreaded doing an activity every time we did science. Kuddos to the moms that can hang! K12 Independent was not a good fit for us at the time. Had I started homeschooling in K or 1st I think it wod have been great. I may even do it with my little. I don't regrettit either though because from it I learned what I wanted.
  6. Discovery education streaming and youtube channels like smarter every day...national geographic kids....
  7. I have the cords to hook my laptop to my tv. But mostly we just watch on the laptop or nook tablet. Mind you I have one schooling and a toddler.
  8. Whar ellie said. We bought it and used it for our first year homeschooling. Had I researched it more and made my first purchases differently we may still use it but I didn't and we don't. Not sayingi never will again. Just not right now.
  9. Just get Bookshark in june... its secular sonlight....but you just take out the religous content and add in something to cover the info in the item removed.
  10. We use the print version. Kinda went in one ear and out the other until recently. Now she remembers words from past lessons so I'm glad I use it.
  11. Have you thought about teaching her ancient number systems? ETC Montessori has the materials for the math with different number systems used throughout history. One of them uses a base 30 system versus base ten. Could be the fun/ challenge you are looking for.
  12. I would & did do fll2 then 4 no gaps you could use 3 too but we didn't and it was seamless. She is in 4th now we started it in 3rd.
  13. I have a nook tablet hd+ $179 I believe and I am extremely happy with it....I don't use many but it coordinates with google apps so it think it is perfect...and no camera ....I think you can also set up multiple uses and safety controls but I haven't done that either. I use it for surfing the web, discovery streaming & techbook, fb and such.
  14. All spelling programs failed for my dd until AAS...I firmly believe its an age thing ...I will never start spelling again formally until 3rd grade.
  15. I had the same issue when we started homeschooling. The difference was that I planned for the changes I guess. I knew the first year was an experiment and I whipped my kid out of PS really quick (she was previously in a private school). So I purchased the K12 independent study option outright based on her placement test results. Then I worked from there. I learned what I wanted from how she interacted with the curriculum and what we did. ETC... I learned that she needed me on her all day to get her school done so parent intensive is the way we went. Now (3 years later) she can handle and wants to be more independent. So it's more than just the curriculum that you need to worry about its your kids individual needs as well as your family's needs. What we have stuck with: Math In Focus ( and we will use it through middle school) Sonlight History, Read Alouds and Readers & Science (I will be switching to Bookshark/their sister company in June) Nature Study (The Comstock Nature Study Book) Classic Kids Collection for Music with the Meet the Worlds Greatest Composer Series books & DSO Kids website (free) Artistic Pursuits (Skill not appreciation) CAP Latin Programs Nature/Science/Geograpy Read Alouds: The Storybook of Science, Pagoo, A Child's History of Geography, etc.... All About Spelling, Wordly Wise & First Language Lessons.
  16. We school year round. So I never really worry about what finishes when. I just pick up the next level of each book or subject when we finish the last. we break randomly when hubby is off or we go on vacation so she gets the time off but not a whole summer. I would hate having to deal with the review that would need to be accomplished after a 2-3 month break.
  17. We have used Sonlight for the past two years and we will be switching to BookShark here in the next two months. Everything is read aloud from a different book. Except her readers. History-That can be like 3 different books. You read from each one at different times. Science- Which I have her read aloud to me. Read Aloud- This is one book at a time. This year Poems and Aseop alternate through out the week Her reader & she reads for an hour before bed outside of that (typically library books she is on a non-fiction kick right now) Outside of that we are Reading Shakespeare for Children, The Burgess Bird Book which we just started yesterday cause dd is on a bird kick and A Child's History of Geography. They are just scheduled at different times. I have a 15 month old terror running around who decides to scream as loud as possible everytime we sit down and open a book, so things get pretty interesting around here.
  18. We will be using Book Shark 3 next year for 5th. I is the equivalent to Sonlight Core D only secular for History, LA and Science, Math in Focus 5, song school latin 2, All About Spelling 4 &5, the first half of Beautiful Feet Geography, Artisitic Pursuits 4 (finishing), Classic Kids Collection 2 Music, Nature Study with/Outdoor Challenge, The Way things Work (yesterday's Classic) and I am not sure Shakespeare Play yet.
  19. For Phonics I suggest doing something along the Montessori Route if you think you can do it. There are many Montessori distributors out there I happen to be partial to ETC Montessori because they are awesome and there customer service is phenomenal so that is what I am going to paste here. This is a link to the recommended path (its a new site so the links aren't working yet to get from there to the curriculum) http://www.montessorireadingseries.com/emergent-reading-curriculum.html Then here is what I would suggest starting with: http://www.etcmontessorionline.com/curriculum-bundles/language-reading-bundles/complete-reading-series Again they are pricey so I would look at other retailers if you are not a nut job like me. LOL For Science at such a young age why not just read and do research using books like The Burgess Animal Book for Children or The Burgess Bird Book for Children, If you are Christians you may love The Storybook of Science (we are not and we love it & there are 3 books in this series), The Secret of Everyday Things and The Wonder book of Chemistry (Yesterday's Classics). Such fun. Another awesome one is The Nature Study book by Comstock. We go on a walk around the neighborhood once a week at least. She takes a camera and a bucket. Takes pictures and picks up sticks, seeds, flowers etc. Then we spend the week investigating them, pressing flowers or setting up a nature display. Videos at the library or online. That type of thing.
  20. Not sure where the article is...will have to have hubby look tomorrow but there are actually only two gene combinations on one chromosome that will have zero sensitivity to wheat.... that means everyone else will have some sort of adverse effects from it... and for those critics of a gf diet for anyone check this celiac does not go diagnosed in most cases and lays dormant until onset by a stresssor in most cases... there is no cure and the only way to avoid and reverse its affects is to eat gf... grandmother=celiac diagnosed via villi byopsy...sister started swelling up like a balloon to the point hr skin was stretching took her off gluten swelling that lasted years was gone in a week, dropped nearly 60 lbs in 6 months (19) ... other sister has associated rash/skin issues self treated... myself- 4 miscarriages, inconclusive tests and surgeries later I took myself off gluten for gastro issues...2.5 years later (the longest suggested time to reverse the effects of gluten in a celiac) I got pregnant and carried to term for the first time in 8 years (recurrent miscarriage and infertility are caused by celiac) so if you think I am going to wait for doctors usming flow charts to pull their heads out of their rears or for the effects to damage my kiddos like me you are wrong....eat fruit, veggies, rice, nuts, corn, rice, gf oats eat FOOD and not krap and teach your kids to and everyone will be fine.....its not hard... the hard thing is trying to figure out why in the world you put gluten in the stuff they do!
  21. We will be doing core d for fifth grade so I am biased.
  22. You need a signature line si I can see what you are using for curriculum lol...first I am going to say if you wanna get an eval go for it BUT might I suggest making a change. Don't talk about where you are or need to be. Invest in all about reading level 1. Why? because it is scripted right down to the point of including encouragement to the student and its hands on and it has games and because its awesome and I am sure the list goes on lol. Get right start math if your not already using it cause its hands on. Start the day with a card game of war or monopoly jr. Then get something fun like Galoping the Globe or Cantering the Country. If you are not christian don't do the bible and read secular books. This is fun! Have the kids pick where they want to travel, take a suitcase(basket) to the library annd get picture books, read alouds, videos from the recommended list. Make/ print all your worksheets for that place. Google it. Find out fun facts. Find something local to do. Have fun. It sounds like you all have lost the joy.
