  1. Assuming this man is not a bishop, I would contact his bishop. If you know the man's address, type it into the meetinghouse locator https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/maps/meetinghouses/@33.927729,-117.209385,13 and it should bring up the ward he belongs to (you may need to select an option such as English speaking) when you click on the ward name, it should have the bishop's name and a phone number. Hope this helps and thank you for reporting your concern. I know I try to be vigilant about the leaders I allow my kids to be around.
  2. Do you have some manipulatives that she could just play around with now? Just in a no-pressure way for a while then let her grab them whenever she wants for help with math? Also I know you said computer, but for one of my kids the "Addition Facts That Stick " book was so helpful for her to visualize and eventually memorize the facts. You could even do just the game part for right now without the worksheets.
  3. Yes, we have that one too. I love how open ended it is. When my DD was around age 4 she would take the cards and make up her own games with them.
  4. I think it was on these boards that I first heard about Prime Climb, so I wanted to share that Math for Love is doing a Kickstarter for a new math game. This one is for multiplication facts, it looks great. The Kickstarter has already funded, but there is still quite a bit of time to get in if you are interested. I am in no way affiliated with Math for Love, except that I like their products and have backed their Kickstarters in the past. Here's the link.
  5. I haven't read all of the replies, but this really hit home with me because I remember the exact same thing happening to me in 5th grade. I was so embarrassed and I knew the other kids in the class knew it was my report that the teacher was using as the "bad example". I was never diagnosed with a LD, but writing and spelling have always been difficult for me, and my teacher doing that in no way encouraged or taught me to be a better writer. I'm sorry that happened to your DD. I would definitely address this with the teacher.
  6. Kate Snow's "_____ Facts that Stick" books were perfect for my very visual learner and good enough for my kids who are not super visual. She uses a combination of visualizing with 10 frames, games, and drill worksheets.
  7. I watched yesterday and will be watching today. DH is/was young men's president in our ward so the changes announced for the young men are exciting for us. Love the new young women's theme. Loved President Nelson' s talk in the women's session.
  8. That is exactly what we did with my DD this year. 8 weeks into the school year and I think we made the right choice. I did call during the summer and talk to the school counselor about putting her in the "scholars" classes and advanced band. DD has needed to adjust to the amount of homework given, getting up early every day, and learn to self-advocate with teachers. Being in band and the scholars classes has helped her make friends, and so far there hasn't been any of the social drama I was worried about.
  9. Our school district has a written policy that states every child from preschool through grade 12 will have homework assigned daily. One of the many reasons we ended up homeschooling.
  10. I didn't notice, but then again we're watching on a laptop, so not great sound in general.
  11. I didn't see a thread about this yet. Anyone watching? If you're interested in watching you can go to http://www.lds.org
  12. We love LMA! I was able to buy liquid watercolors and watercolor paper. Now we just download the outlines (free on the LMA website) and watch the YouTube videos. The live paint along videos go into a little more detail and have some technique practice at the beginning, where as the tutorial only videos skip some of that.
  13. If you haven't seen it already, they updated the app with the new Come Follow Me curriculum for home and Sunday School and primary. It looks really good, I'm excited to start using it.
  14. IEW theme based writing (ancients 6th, world history 7th grade), goes well with our history.
  15. I have not used them but there is History Unboxed and Dig Magazine
  16. There is a class at Well Educated Mind Academy for parents called Math that Makes Sense. It is supposed to teach you how to teach math, I believe they use the Singapore Math books. http://www.wtmacademy.com/courses-for-adults/ I think you can still take the class as a self paced option.
  17. You can go to Julian if you like small old town touristy things, museums at Balboa park (next to the zoo), Catalina Island, the boardwalk at Pacific Beach
  18. We use this paper and have done many of the projects on artprojectsforkids with them with great success.
  19. We use these Daily Mental Math books, they are quick and provide enough review for my kids. I don't buy the answer key, I haven't found it necessary.
  20. My DD completed FLL 1-3 and could diagram the sentences in the book correctly and had all the definitions memorized, but when asked to identify a subject or verb in any given sentence could not. We finished Fix It book 1 this year, and I would say it was successful in helping her identify parts of speech, and since we use IEW for writing it also reinforces some of the style & dress up techniques. She likes Fix It, and it is quick and easy, FLL was taking a huge chunk of time every day, Fix It is 4 days a week 10 min. a day. It does not, however, teach diagramming. Some feel that a grammar program without diagramming is not complete. I am happy with the program and plan to continue using it.
  21. This describes me as a child and still as an adult although I've improved some. I can still remember being able to spell all of my spelling list orally perfectly, but when I took the written test at school, I would fail. I actually did quite well one year in a class spelling bee, after which my teacher then accused me of purposely failing my written spelling tests, because obviously I knew how to spell. I don't know if I'm dyslexic or disgraphic or not. Learning spelling rules along with my kids has helped quite a bit, but I probably won't ever be a terrific speller. I enjoyed listening to the talk by Andrew Pudewa Spelling and the Brain.
