  1. New argument against the Tebow Bill in VA in today's Washington Post. http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/if-you-suit-up-for-a-high-schools-team-you-should-sit-in-its-classroom-too/2012/02/08/gIQA3b30JR_story.html According to Preston Williams the homeschoolers shouldn't be allowed to play because public schooled "Johnny" is part of the "community" and the homeschooler isn't. It wouldn't be fair for "Johnny" to lose his place on the team to someone not a part of the community. I had thought the general public was becoming more knowledgeable and accepting of homeschooling. The comments would make me think maybe not. Mary
  2. I believe the article about the online charter school that was linked said they were using it from 2001-2004. I haven't seen anything talking about how the Santorums homeschool now. Anyone know? I really can't get all worked up about the residency issue. We are retired military and we retained the residency of our home state wherever we lived. Santorum was representing the state of PA in Washington. Of course he had to have a home near DC and his family wanted to be with him. But he was still a Pennsylvanian, or he couldn't represent them. He was still paying taxes there. I'm sure it was a unique case for the charter school and had never come up before, or probably since. Mary
  3. Short version-Tim Tebow is the quarterback for the Denver Broncos. He was the Heisman Trophy winning, quarterback of the Florida Gators in college. He was homeschooled. His parents were missionaries and he is outspoken in this Christian faith. There is a lot more, but that gives you the gist. Mary
  4. This has been discussed a lot here lately :001_smile: See http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=341232&highlight=tebow+bill http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=346283&highlight=tebow+bill Mary
  5. We've had a busy kidney stone year in our family! My dh had a lithotripsy during the summer. Don't know about the hammock etc, (He's tied up or I'd ask) but he was in a twilight sleep and had no pain afterwards. They must have blasted the stone to smithereens because he never felt anything pass. He didn't have any pain with the stone prior to the procedure, but our dd has stones and we know the pain she has. We didn't want dh to be traveling, or to be hit at a very inopportune time (like a dd's wedding day!) and decided to get it out of there. Older 21 yo dd, who has a history of kidney stones, was struck with one in November. She was in extreme pain and SICK!!! She was 12 hours away at college. The stone was stuck in her ureter (between kidney and bladder) They knocked her out with a general and inserted a stent. She had it in for almost 4 weeks and then had to be knocked out again to remove it and the stone. The stent was very uncomfortable and she felt like she had a UTI the whole time. As an observer, I would say the lithotripsy was a piece of cake compared to the stent, etc. We have military medical care, so we never saw the bill for the lithotripsy. But my dd was in a civilian hospital and the bill for the first stay and procedure alone was over $25,000!!!! Thankfully, it was covered by our insurance! After watching my dd suffer with these I'm all for getting them out!! Mary
  6. My 17 yo dd has been dancing since she was 4, classical ballet only. She has danced at three different pre-pro schools, one at a professional company. I can count only three girls in all that time who had eating disorders, but they worked through them with the school, professional help and their parents. A good school will be very aware of the issue and provide training on nutrition. The bottom line is to be a professional ballet dancer you have to have a specific body type. It's not just thinness, but arches of feet, length of torso, turnout from the hips, and other things. It's just a fact of the art, kind of like the NBA not having 5'10" players :001_smile: So all the professionals the dancers aspire to be like are thin. But a good ballet school, even a pre-professional one, realizes that most of their dancers will not ultimately be professional and they want healthy dancers. A dancer can't dance well if she is starving! Mary
  7. Fantastic! The newest edition of Pointe magazine has an article about Ms Tharp and the new ballet. Have you seen it? Mary ETA: I went back to look at my dd's copy and article might we overstating it. But I found it online here http://pointemagazine.com/issues/februarymarch-2012/call-board It's the second article down. The magazine had a picture with it.
  8. I'll let you know in a few days. I ordered the book used from Amazon yesterday and it has shipped! Mary
  9. :iagree:We have rescued two Westies who have been fabulous!. We LOVE Westies.:001_smile: In between the two we fostered one with the intent to adopt. On the first evening with us she growled at both my dh and dds (12 and 8 at the time) We knew she had issues in her old home with the other Westie, but she wanted to be the alpha in our house with the kids. She was back with the rescue at the first opportunity. I didn't want to have to worry about her with our kids or any guests in the future. There may we a wonderful dog out there for you that you don't have to worry about with the kids. Five months after we returned that Westie (and she got a great home with a couple without kids) we got our Annie and have had her for almost nine years. She is the most loving, sweet dog and we would have missed her if we had kept the other one!! Mary
  10. Just something that has me curious about this story- all the headlines say "Bridge Collapses"- NO a huge ship ran into it! I don't get it. The stories I've seen so far don't even talk about the ship. Mary ETA: Oops, ignore me, they have updated all the stories since I originally read them.
  11. If you start out with raw potato it will take a long time. My mom would dice up leftover baked potatoes and fry them up until the outsides were crispy, um-um. You could add onions and seasoning salt and I bet they would be good! Mary
  12. I don't know, and of course you know your daughter, but is it possible she could have fully intended to correct the math problems when she told you and then forgotten? That happens to all of us here, kids and parents alike, and I certainly wouldn't consider that a lie. We all just get caught up in other activities and whatever it was slips our minds. If she doesn't normally do schoolwork in the evening and no one reminded her it could easily be forgotten. You said you asked her why she lied, not why she didn't do them. I find the first question very confrontational and I know I would be very offended if it was assumed I lied instead of inadvertently forgetting something. Just a thought. Mary Oops, saw your follow-up. Well if she says she didn't forget then that's a whole 'nother ball game!
  13. I think the easiest thing to do would be just to send the collection agency a copy of the Release of Claim and see what happens. I bet that would end the whole thing. If not THEN call your attorney. Mary
  14. To be truthful, for the most part I stayed away from the High School Board. I have one dd who is a senior in college and one who is a junior in high school. Once we figured out what our goals were and our way of achieving them I stayed away, UNLESS I had a VERY SPECIFIC question. Then I would go and search the board. Even though I am very confident with our choices, especially since they have both succeed with those choices, that board INTIMIDATES ME!!! Mary
  15. :iagree:I think you hit the nail on the head! Wickham had no intention of marrying Lydia until Darcy made it attractive.
  16. Hallmark used to carry things like that. I don't know if they do anymore. Might be worth a call. Mary
  17. I have heard (haven't done it myself) that if you have a mirror you can set it up so the student can watch the teacher's movements in the mirror and follow that :001_smile: Mary
  18. If you like the Christmas Can Can, check these out:001_smile: Hey Santa - Who Spiked the Eggnog – You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch - (not as good quality, from a video of a concert) They have a new PBS special that is currently running around the country. We've seen them twice in concert and they are wonderful! Mary
  19. :iagree:I think you need to legally document EVERYTHING your sister did and do what you can to protect your dad financially. Consulting an attorney would be the first thing on my list! Mary
  20. :iagree::iagree::iagree: And I think my kids think I like doing that! It was one of the best things about my oldest going to college-it wasn't my business anymore!! Mary
