  1. Sorry I mean kids have to get level 3 NCEA for university entrance. This is based more than half on internal assessments which can't be done by home schoolers. There a a couple of subjects that there are the required credits can be gained by external exam but you would have to do 3 papers in the same time the school students do 1 or 2 (it is 3 hours for the calculus exam for instance whether you do 1, 2 or 3 of the components. Being able to do 4 years of science, 4 years maths etc then maybe sit the SAT seems like it should have a lot of flex although There seem to be more required areas. (There is a way of sitting SATs here but I don't know how easy they are to access). Eta. There are ways round this but the playing field is distinctly uneven.
  2. Ah the perfect way of evening out the level of achievement and the amount of confusion.
  3. What about distance options? I have been looking way ahead and since I am 6 hours drive from the nearest universities and our equivalent of community colleges don't offer maths, english, classics etc the only option is distance courses at first year university level.
  4. It seems to me that the US system makes doing non traditional high school much easier. Also being able to write a transcript. Here it is all exams based and there is no automatic right of home schoolers to sit the exams.
  5. No. But those kids would be abused whether they were going to school or not. Those who are only getting abused at school wouldn't be if they weren't at school.
  6. I think that is it. Something going wrong as a result of inaction somehow seems less bad on the surface than something as a result of an action. I feel it myself and have to remind myself that it is not logical. The arguments about weight are irrelevant but come up alot. I really don't think many overweight people would turn down a weight gain vaccine that was as safe and effective as the Covid ones. I would take one with a 50% efficacy. When I am stressed and short of sleep I gain weight and the last 5 years have been exceeding successful with at least 4 days a week on less than 4 hours sleep.
  7. I agree. Humans decided to live as a society. They decided society needs rules more detailed than "everyone be nice to each other" and they accepted there would need to be some system to deal with those who don't follow those rules. We don't always like the rules and there should be a way of objecting and trying to change them - but we don't get to do things that can be society as a whole. In this case the benefit to society over rules the desires of the individual. No one is going to hold you down and forcibly vaccinate you but society is going to take steps to minimise the damage you can cause. All decisions have consequences.
  8. I only had my second Pfizer shot yesterday and my kids are having their second next week. I don't think there has been any talk of boosters yet.
  9. My mother's cats would look out the front door in disgust then demand you open the back door instead.
  10. But people who are obese usually spend their whole life fighting it and would be overjoyed to take a vaccine that worked as well as some of the covid ones. And no one is saying people should ignore all the other problems. We just aren't worrying so much about the floor until we fix the roof. The floor is unsafe but fixing it before the roof is pointless.
  11. Yes. Most people would prefer to die peacefully and painlessly surrounded by lived ones not alone in ICU on a ventilator.
  12. Prunes, nuts and some potato chips. It is really not a good idea to gorge on prunes and I am actually mildly allergic to nuts.
  13. I have something similar to US butcher block. I got it because it was cheap and I could cut it myself. If I were doing it again I wouldn't use it on the sink bench (as I have some ugly marks from water damage) but I like it everywhere else.
  14. Yes. It probably has little to do with hunger or self control.
  15. Yes my kids had them with blank squares at school when they were 5. When I was helping the I read it as 4 + blank square = 8. I also did a lot of what is 4 + 4, what is 4000 + 4000 (confused look), what is 4 lollies + 4 lollies, what is 4 dogs + 4 dogs. Right then what is 4thousand + 4thousand? What is 4million + 4million.
  16. I bought the book/online book combo. That way one person can use each.
  17. Since the courses are $60 and aimed at children, a writing not a language one and you appear to have joined to make this comment ...
  18. If you can afford testing do it. You may find out some stuff you didn't know. Also it does make a bit difference whether it was group of individual. My ASD son panics if he misses an instruction or can't work out what to do. Rather than do the wrong thing he does nothing and if he has the wrong teacher who thinks he is being non complaint it can go downhill fast. Lucky he has excellent teachers for both percussion and tap/ballet.
  19. Me too. Though wind chimes would be better than constantly barking dogs or loud music (or even worsened commercial radio).
  20. So we have; Lantern English 2 Funda Funda Middle School Latin 1 AOPS PA (probably not until February) book not online Ellen McHenry mapping the world with art Miscellaneous unplanned science Marimba Lessons Tap and Ballet
  21. There is a sequence on The AOPS website.
  22. Me too. It helps me focus on something complicated or if there are distractions.
  23. Before you do anything. Does this counsellor have experience with non NT parenting? Behavioural modification techniques tend to assume the child can do what is being asked but needs slightly more incentive while they develop a habit of doing it. If the child actually can't do it it becomes another source of anxiety. From just observation it seems to be the only kids rewards and consequences work for are kids who actually don't need them because they are pretty compliant anyway.
