  1. For pepper spray to be effective against one person, you need to be close enough, and in control enough, to spray it directly across their eyes/eyebrows (so it continues to drip into the eyes). Even then, the officer is likely to suffer some effects, which isn’t good. Given the speed a person with a knife can do damage, and the distance he was from the subject with the knife appearing to be trying to kill someone else, he really didn’t have a lot of options to pick from in the split-second he had to make a decision that was potentially life-saving for the girl in pink. Shoot or get stabbed
  2. I’m on team No Guilt. Did you talk about the election this year? Discuss government policy affecting people? Can you find a way to make some of English do double duty? Any books you’ve read that took place in another region of the US? About a different political system?
  3. Alternatively, they may have so many donations that it is taking them ages to go through, and you tell them how many/what boxes you dropped off and they let you go through it.
  4. It’s okay to say you’re busy. I’d hate for you to tell me you’re free, then find out/feel like I’m keeping you from important things! And if she says, “Anything I can help with?” then let her know to bring her work clothes and gloves. Because I would absolutely pitch in if I had the time.
  5. I would text again, and then follow up with a voicemail. I was really anxious when I made an appointment with my stylist, and then her furnace went so she had to delay. Then her pipes burst because of the furnace. And all of a sudden she was rebooking me for a week later. Then I took a deep breath and said, “Self, you haven’t been since September 2019, and NOW you’re worried about a couple of days?” And sure enough, she was able to fit me in earlier than expected, and all was well, lol.
  6. My mom put in a sink that extends out past the counter edge, which makes it more comfortable for her husband to sit at. At first they put a regular stool there, then his walker.
  7. These are exactly the things I suggested to my mom and they didn’t do any except the Togo bidet toilet and bars. Also, locating the shower on/off so the person turning it on/adjusting temp doesn’t get wet.
  8. My mom remodeled her bathroom for my step-father and did not take any of the ADA suggestions. He said he didn’t need them, and she thought a “normal” (to her) shower with a half wall and swinging door looked better. He deteriorated quickly while it was being finished and a year later, hasn’t been able to use it. Just make everything as accessible as possible to start.
  9. Oh, I also numbered my boxes, but I used the coloured circle stickers instead of card stock. And if you start with least-used items, you know when unpacking to prioritize the higher numbers. And I used a QR code for each box’s contents, printed it out and taped it on the side. For that move, our household goods were going to spend overnight piled in the airport, then had to go on at least 2 planes and three airports. I did NOT want any boxes labelled “PlayStation” walking away.
  10. And honestly, if you’re painting anyway, you may as well take personal things off the wall beforehand, if that’s something you would do to stage, anyway.
  11. It must be an emotional kind of day, because I’m just streaming tears over here. I’m glad he’s found you. The only thing I can think of that I haven’t seen is sharing when you’re eating out. Maybe it’s a family thing, but quite often if somebody gets something especially tasty or different, they’ll put some on a bread plate so everyone can have a bite. When the kids were younger, when we were discussing the menu, they might be trying to decide between two items, and usually go with the safe one. If I thought they (and I!) would like it, I would get their second choice. Also, sharing appetizers is a good way to try things. I think we all have a safe plan going into a restaurant. For one of my kids, it’s steak, for the other it’s fish. Pretty much any sit-down place we go is going to have those. They’re willing to try almost anything, but it’s nice to know there’s going to he *something*. Also, have you tried going to a restaurant that serves food family style? Around here that would be Chinese, Indian, and sushi that I can think of right now. Best of luck to you! Keep being gentle and taking your time!
  12. Few 14 year olds are equipped to deal with the situations that arise from umpping/reffing. About the same ratio as sport parents that are willing to respect a 14 year old’s opinion.
  13. Now, I would totally zoom in for that. Face only, at first.
  14. 😂 My DH is a rare creature who would like me to go to the hunting cabin and hang out. I required certain amenities in our camper to go camping.... still require running water, flush toilet, or at least no open air under my butt!!! And so, although it is “our” land, I’m quite happy staying home!
  15. We bought a quarter section in the middle of nowhere. It’s mostly for hunting. It’s got propane furnace, generator, outhouse.... Ask away....
  16. You changed his life and he changed yours. The time you had together was a blessing for all of you; there’s never enough time.
  17. I’m firmly in camp “block” and don’t think about it twice.
  18. I would say that the commute and extra time don’t work for you at this stage, but if there is an online class, you would be able to help out with that.
  19. We were buying flavoured sparkling water.... so we bought a sodastream and some flavour drops....
  20. Stuff hole with newspaper, then spray foam, then cut it even to the wall? Gorilla patch and seal tape? Actual metal drywall patching?
  21. I’m relieved when activities are only 20 minutes away, tbh. But if it doesn’t work for you, it doesn’t work. With everything here still shut down, it’s crazy the lengths I’m willing to go for my kids to physically see people.
  22. Ah yes, asking her to count is a completely different animal..... I would say my kids did very little counting themselves at 3yo, but I sure did a lot! Here, let me help you with you buttons! One button, two buttons.... Look at all the fish in the tank! A yellow fish! Another yellow fish! Three yellow fish!
  23. Besides regular day-to-day counting (how many plates do we need? Can you find two blue blocks for the tower? How many eggs in the cake? How many legs does the (animal/insect in picture) have?), the most intentional counting I can remember doing is up and down steps (which I later used for negative numbers) and hopscotch.
