  1. We really enjoy Sonlight Science through 6th grade for just this reason! A couple of years ago I wrote: Even if you don't buy the whole shebang, I recommend checking out the book lists for levels D-G. It might give you a good place to start.
  2. We've used (and continue to use): English - 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,and 7 (7 for the first time this year) Spelling - 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 Penmanship - 1, 2, 3, and 4 I really love these programs! I enjoyed Science 2 and 3, but it wasn't quite enough for my science loving boys. I used Math 3 as a break from Saxon with my oldest. It went over rather horribly and we went back to Saxon.
  3. Jaycee Dugard's non-detection despite multiple police visits to the house along with an equally horrific local case here in WI made me really wish the police were more thorough in verifying nothing is amiss when neighbors call 911. I'm glad nothing was wrong with your girls, but I wouldn't feel weird about it. The officer was just doing their job. :)
  4. What wonderful scores! Congrats to your family!
  5. I was given this advice, too. I downloaded the Home School Tracker+ last week, and I'm trying to get the hang of it! It was a little rough at first, but I think I'm getting it. I copied/pasted Lori D's timeline into a Word doc. Thank you for linking it! :)
  6. My science and math loving oldest ds did Apologia General last year for sixth grade. I believe it is very do-able for a sixth grader. We did not love it, however, and went with BJU Earth Science this year for seventh. I plan on doing BJU Life Science next year for sixth grade for my second ds. ;)
  7. Happy Birthday! Recently, my 12 year old received some baseball cards from a neighbor. He was so excited because they were sooooo old ... from way back in the 80s! Congrats to your kids on their classes! :)
  8. :grouphug: Sorry you're having such a rough day. I think we've all had days like this. I hope you're able to relax and be encouraged.
  9. Wow, how wonderful! Congratulations! :cheers2:
  10. :iagree: My parents contributed $0 to my education. It just wasn't possible for them. The financial aid office was extremely helpful and the only way I was able to attend college. I received a combination of scholarships, grants, and loans. I attended college full time and worked part-time. Unless it is absolutely necessary to wait, I would start in the spring. In my immediate circle, the ones who put off going to college to work rarely go back to school.
  11. Agreeing with others -- 2 would be too easy for a third grader. Have you looked at the samples online to see if 3 would be a good fit? http://www.rodandstaff.info/samples/3/english/ :iagree:
  12. I've never heard of Prairie Primer, but my very boy-boys love, love, love the Laura Ingalls Wilder books! The two oldest have read them probably twenty times each by their own choice! We've just hooked ds #3 ... he's made it through Little House in the Big Woods, Little House on the Prairie, and Farmer Boy. :-D
  13. Super old thread! :-) I haven't read this book, but Po Bronson is fantastic. I really like How Not to Talk to Your Kids: The inverse power of praise. I think this is chapter one in the book. :)
  14. Oh my gosh, Colleen. I'm so sorry for your husband and your family. You will be in my thoughts and prayers. ~Heather
  15. I was in the Honors college at my large (20,000+ students) state U. I graduated in 2000. The classes were small and taught seminar style by top professors in the university. They were my favorite classes!
  16. How was your weekend? It was very nice. The three oldest boys and I went and toured the frigate USS De Wert down at Navy Week, and watched the dress rehearsal of the Air Show. The jets were so impressive! Can you tell me what you have planned for tomorrow without hyperventilating? I'll try ... we're starting half of our school subjects! I'm almost done planning, so of course I came over here as a reward. :D Random question of the night: What is your favorite group game? Pictionary! We discovered last year that this is super fun when extended family is over & all ages can join in.
  17. The boys and I finally watched the videos as an introduction & kick-off to oldest ds's Earth science study and wow! They were very interesting!!! There are four videos and each one is about 12min. long. The homepage for the videos is http://geospatialrevolution.psu.edu/
  18. Congrats to you and your dd! What a wonderful accomplishment for her! Best wishes on her new journey!
  19. I love Janice's post! It gives me an excellent framework for this year. Thank you so much for highlighting it. ETA: and also thank you, PlumCrazyMom, for linking Nan's posts. I'm reading through those threads now. :)
