  1. I'd absolutely let the parents know. The parents might be clueless. Inappropriate sexualized behavior of young girls is often a sign of sexual abuse. Even if she wasn't abused, this kind of behavior is extremely risky.
  2. We love Hillsdale's guide, too! You can get the 9-12 guide, too, with registration on the same link. It is fantastic!
  3. We have watched all the Firefly episodes and the Serenity movie now, and have nothing else to watch. Sigh.
  4. 37 since January of 2008. :) Heather, you're not the only one; there are a few others that are thread-starting happy, too.
  5. http://ztwistbooks.com/oscstore/index.php?cPath=21 :)
  6. Yes, of course, we have our own bees. We made our own beehive (from scratch) and the caught a feral swarm. Well, we unschool on the weekends and in the summer. During the regular school year we use the most rigorous classical curricula there is (everything is in Latin, Hebrew, Greek, or French; it's OOP from the 1700s).
  7. Has anyone used Zaner-Bloser's Spelling Connections? What did you think? I've used Rod and Staff's Spelling by Sound and Structure and MCP's Spelling Workout in the past and I'm looking to switch things up next year for my rising 1st and 4th graders. Thank you! :)
  8. Oh, Jane! I just want to :grouphug: you! Please, please get to a regular doctor asap. Have a friend or church member or coop member or neighbor drive you if you have to. Print out your post (and maybe a few other recent ones and e-mail it (them) to your doctor ahead of time so they know exactly what's going on and you don't freeze or forget what you want to say. I'm worried about you! :grouphug::grouphug::grouphug:
  9. My personal experience is just the opposite. I've read extensive, high quality literature since I was a teen and I can't write worth a hoot! I even was in the honors program in college and graduated college magna cum laude and still feel self-conscious about my grammar and writing. I've learned so much teaching my own sons grammar. I'm glad that they're getting the foundation I never received.
  10. No, I haven't. I just requested it through inter-library loan. :-) Hee-hee! I actually know atheists who are quite Biblically literate and can do this with ease; usually it is to point out Christian hypocrisy. :) Just to give my street creds :D, my parents are Republican delegates; I was raised Southern Baptist and have attended everything from non-denominational mega-churches to IFB churches. (I'm now a Reformed Baptist.:) ) I say that to establish that I've been in/around the culture for a long time. I don't find the typical politically aware, but not hyper-politically active church members quoting Rand. I do find this a LOT among self identified Tea-Party members who are also regular church goers.
  11. Although, I really wish I could be. :) Have you read Republocrat: Confessions of a Liberal Conservative? I read it recently and loved it, but can't find anyone else who's read it. :001_smile:
  12. I don't know if I agree with this. It is based on the assumption that people can't reason for themselves. Of course based on this: You might be right, I'm glad I had no clue about Rand or Objectivism before reading The Fountainhead. I confess her ideas seduced me somewhat, but on my own I had to reconcile what she was saying with my faith. If I wasn't a Christian, I would say that her philosophy makes sense to me. (Does that make me an evil person?) When I did reconcile it with my faith, however, I became convinced of Mrs. Mungo's first line. Oh ... and, her writing is super annoying. It's very, very, very long winded and she repeats herself a gazillion times. That said, if you had to pick between Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead, I'd go with The Fountainhead.
  13. Ok, so I really did add it to my Netflix queue the other day ... we just finished episode 7. We are hooked! We're already sad that there are so few episodes left.
