  1. That helps a lot Erica! I am completely happy with his day-to-day work, so I will just keep on the same path. Thank you very much!
  2. Hi! We received the results from our son's Explore test today. We weren't sure what to expect because this was the first standardized test he's taken. He did very well in math and science, but scored much lower in English: 10, with subscores of Usage/Mechanics: 5 and Rhetorical Skills: 5 and Reading: 12. I'm not sure if we should keep on keepin' on, do something differently or add something in here? He is currently working through Rod & Staff's English 4 with a 92% average. I'm thinking some sort of reading comprehension workbook or curriculum, but I really am at a loss with what to do, if anything. ~Heather
  3. Ditto on the Seed Savers Exchange. They are wonderful!
  4. Thanks for the link Erica! Ooh -- great idea about practicing with a calculator! I will try to go out and get him one to practice for the next two weeks today. ~Heather
  5. Hi there! My son will be taking this on Feb 21st. He's 8 (almost 9) and has never taken a standardized test before. Did you feel the need to prepare your children for it? I am looking for a sample answer sheet online to show him how to fill in the little bubbles, but am coming up short.
  6. :iagree: I was pretty active on the old boards, but haven't been as active on these new ones. (I think I still have less than 10 posts, LOL!) I still have posts like some of the ones in this thread from the old boards copied and pasted into documents -- the title of the file is "WTM board advice". Some of the advice I have found most helpful is from homeschooling moms who teach in co-ops or at the college level! Far from becoming defensive, they really motivate me to make sure that I don't fall into some of the more common pitfalls that they see in homeschooling families. :-)
  7. I like Excel for this, too. Both of my boys (3rd and 1st grade) have their own schedules, which we keep in the front see-through pocket of a 3 ring-binder. When the week is done, I three-hole punch the sheet and slip the schedule inside. This way we have an automatic record of what we did each week. The first column of the spreadsheet has their subjects listed. The other columns are days of the week. Basically, I spend about an hour on Friday night or Saturday filling in their schedules for the upcoming week. If we don't get to something one week, I just copy/paste it from the old box (for example, we skipped grammar on Friday), to the new box (paste it on the Monday slot). We've been doing it this way for a couple of years now and it works well for us.
  8. I put 'other'. We follow TWTM pretty closely & study Latin, too. :-)
  9. We are using NOEO Chemistry 1 for 1st and 3rd grade this year and are loving it! The books are engaging and the amount of notebooking is just perfect for us. We have science everyday and it takes, at the most, 15 minutes a day.
  10. My K5-er has recently read (and enjoyed!): Little Bear Henry and Mudge: The First Book Chester Father Bear Comes Home A Kiss for Little Bear Cowboy Sam Frog and Toad Together Frog and Toad are Friends all the books in the Rod and Staff "God is Good" Series Currently, he is reading through the Rod and Staff "Little Jewel" books
  11. I share your pain. My poor husband hasn't spoken for the last 5 minutes.
  12. We used SOTW Ancients last year for 1st, and are using SOTW Middle Ages this year for 2nd.
  13. My second grader uses Latin for Children Primer A.
