  1. Thank you very much! I do agree with you, Martha. :D
  2. I'm sorry, but what does JAWM mean? I see this all over the place and googling has not helped. :)
  3. Konshaubi: The True Story of Persecuted Christians in the Soviet Union and Testament from Prison by Georgi Vins were both very good.
  4. Sorry it took so long ... I just saw your reply. Thank you very much! This looks great!
  5. This was exactly our situation having, at the time, a 10, 8, and 5 year old. The pregnancy was a bit more difficult due to me being older. I had a few issues (like gestational diabetes) that had not come up in any other pregnancies. As a baby, he was the easiest. Slept through the night very early, nursed well, etc. He is the only baby where I had mild postpartum depression. The first year was absolutely overwhelming for me. I had always been in control and on top of things, even with my other babies, and for awhile I felt everything was spinning out of control. Looking back, I didn't realize I was postpartum until about six months after I stopped nursing (stopped at one year) and the haze started lifting. In hindsight, I wish I known what I was experiencing so I could've reached out for help. Now baby is 25 months and life is good!
  6. :iagree: This was me, too. Except that I ended up going downhill to a very dark place very, very fast. ^^And, this was me, too. Please hug her, tell her you love her, cry with her, but remain firm and get her out of her current situation. No ifs, ands, or buts. Oh, and regarding no AC? As my brothers would say, "Suck it up, buttercup." ;) We never had AC growing up and we survived. :D
  7. My 9yo (4th) and 12 yo (6th) each have 1 hour required assigned literature reading per day plus approx. 30-45 min history reading per day that correlates with whatever we're studying in history.
  8. I just read an article the other day about the west coast bracing for a wave of invasive species as debris from the Japanese tsunami comes ashore. Maybe this could be of interest? Unwelcome guests ride debris from tsunami In looking for this article, I also came across this which sounds like a neat science fair idea. :D
  9. My 12 yo reads the front section (section A) of The Wall Street Journal. No smut and straight news. We've had great conversations about world events. :)
  10. It looks like Comp. Govt has been scrubbed from the site, but the review is cached here and the teacher's initials are T.S..
  11. Ds did participate in one year of FLL, but it wasn't the best experience for a variety of reasons. We have a Mindstorms kit that he's used to build & program a ton of really cool things, but his interest seems to be waning in it. Maybe a different group would yield a better experience? I'll check around. Cyber Security class at a local Tech school? Wow! It never occurred to me that they would have such a thing. Thanks. :-)
  12. Has anyone had a child participate in the National STEM Video Game Challenge or the National High School Cyber Defense Competition? My oldest ds just finished the Coursera Computer Science 101 and loved it, so I'm exploring different extracurricular options for high school. Both of these programs look interesting & I was wondering if anyone has heard of or had experience with them. Thanks!
  13. My 12 year old and I just had a great crack-up over this. We both saw the truth in it ... especially as we have a toddler in the house. :)
  14. Timely thread. My baby is going to be a 7th grader in the fall and I'll be 38. I remember *finally* feeling brave enough to post on the old boards when we started 4K! I, too, am feeling increased (internal) pressure. Some of the recent "my experience" threads combined with a little hovering on the College Confidential Boards has made me feel :001_huh: at times. But, I am so grateful to be homeschooling. I look at him in awe sometimes and feel like Eve exclaiming, “I have gotten a man with the help of the LORD.†I'm sorry you got scammed. That's a major bummer.
  15. Thank you for posting this! My son is loving his Intro to Comp Sci. Coursera course. This looks like a great next step! :)
  16. :thumbup1: My boys and I really enjoyed this! Thank you for posting!
  17. :iagree: We purchased all three levels of the Homeschool French a few years ago. Both of my oldest boys found the lack of grammar/rules frustrating. I took French in high school & college and could help somewhat, but ultimately we put it back on the shelf. I really wish I had only purchased one level, but at the time it seemed like too good of a deal to pass up. :tongue_smilie:
  18. Thank you, Morning Glory. You've been very helpful! :) Donna, my son is fascinated by Google Earth. I am really interested in hearing more about this!
  19. Thank you for this thread & the replies! Oldest ds used Apologia General this year and thought it was "just ok". He wasn't excited about using Apologia again next year. (This is my child who reads math & science texts for fun.) The new BJU Earth Science text looks amazing! Do you recommend buying the entire kit? I see the DVDs aren't available for it because it is so new. I don't mind some teacher prep (I typically spend 1-2 hours every weekend prepping for the upcoming week as it is), but am a little nervous about what exactly I might be getting into. I do have two younger boys & a toddler. Also, did you buy a kit to go along with it (like the ones from Home Training Tools)?
