Pre-reqs for Mathematics: A Human Endeavor?
Rush replied to wendyroo's topic in General Education Discussion Board
DS started Mathematics: A Human Endeavor before Pre-Alg and finished it last week, together with 1st chapter of AoPS Pre-Alg. I think it's a wonderful book and we are planning to buy more of Jacobs' maths this summer, especially Elementary Algebra and Geometry. My kids like chess as an extra. Lots of maths involved. Maths in sports. It's amazing how much you can learn about maths by playing tennis or swimming. Cryptology and mental maths are a hit too. And recently we have started finance. Eldest DS likes analyses, so we will definitely continue. -
I've already amended it a number of times

When I was that age I cut all bugs that I found in our summer house. My granny was working at the lab and she gave me a proper microscope and I spent many summers looking at the insects inside and outside... and now I can literally faint when I see blood

Murderous maths is a hit. My eldest read them 5 times minimum, and Number Devil, and Math for Smarty pants too :) -

DS liked Jacobs' Mathematics A Human Endeavor. He is reading it like a chapter book, on the last chapter in fact :) Also The cryptoclub, books of Perelman and Theoni Pappas, Mental maths of Arthur Benjamin, Original Area Mazes, Janice VanCleave's Math for every kid, Janice VanCleave's Geometry for every kid, Impossible folding Puzzles, Origami and chess books, art books of optical illusion, etc -

That's my life. Lots of driving and a very limited time. Another goal for me this year is to reduce the number of sport activities, especially for DS9. He has 4 different sports and over 18 hours of training per week. This year I feel like I should take the situation in my hands and prioritise a bit earlier for his sake or/and mine
-
Thanks Jackie for your links :) It's looks like that we're going to stick to our last years plans :) except that no one wants to become a ninja anymore  DS9 also hopes to start the regular tennis tournaments this year, improve his maths and start working on his portfolio for Cambridge :D DS7 wants to join a club where he can create and assemble fans :confused1: and wants to start writing his own book. Both - they wish to improve a level of their foreign languages and, of course, both of them are looking forward to start traveling more often as from this year. I have started working myself and I need to readjust and settle down with my new schedule. So far it's not so easy as I thought

Do we have too many outside activities this term?
Rush replied to IsabelC's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I agree with the above. And, of course, everything is individually. I have two energizers and they do lots of different activities and would take even more if we were homeschooling :) but unfortunately we cannot. Beside personally we do believe in cross-training at a very young age and a specialization after 13-14yo, so we let our kids take whatever they want and can do as longer as they sleep & play enough, have time to read and go outside at least 2 times per week. I also want to mention that my kids are under a strict medical supervision and this amount of physical activities was basically prescribed by their doctors :) Our busy schedule looks like this: Mon - Gymnastics(DS9), Chess (DS7) Tue - Tennis (DS9), Athletics (both) Wed - Maths Club(DS9),Gymnastics (DS9), Swimming (DS7), Guitar, till yesterday was ukulele (DS7) Thu - Tennis (DS9), Swimming (DS9), Speed and Agility Training (both) Fri - Tennis (DS9), Gymnastics (DS7), Swimming (DS7) Sat - Music school (both), 2 hours of playing football with friends, Gymnastics (both), Piano (DS9) Sun - Athletics (both) It's very stressful for me to do all these schedules and drive them around, we also have a negative effect on our budget too, but kids are so happy and we keep everything for now. Sooner or later there will be time when you have to prioritise one activity over another, and they know that, but most probably it will be just a redistribution of the time from all activities to the prefered two-three ones. -
After reading this thread I ordered a copy for my son too and he really loves it. Thanks :w00t:
