  1. Dd20 is in the ER near her home several states away. Her boyfriend took her there because she was "loopy" and thought her blood sugar might be dropping rapidly. (She is diabetic) Presenting symptoms nausea and weakness. I talked to a nurse about an hour ago who had just come on duty and could only read me notes from her chart. Not particularly helpful. They are sending her for a brain CT scan??? Didn't have any blood work results yet. Couldn't tell me why they needed the scan. I hate not being there. I hate not knowing what is going on.
  2. Low 70's today. With the oven on and a house full of hot natured people we ran the AC.
  3. And just as a note of encouragement-- I had two babies each born at 35w1d and neither was in the NICU and both went home at two days. Usual? No, but not impossible.
  4. BTDT. Sometimes there is no good answer. I usually err on the side of leaving them alone, but that is just me and my conflict avoidance. Sometimes they want it both ways--to be in control and also to be taken care of and made to do the things that will help.
  5. Find a family that is struggling and give $100 cash before Christmas to brighten their day and lighten their load. If you do it anonymously, you may not know exactly how it turns out, but sometimes imagining the reaction is funner than reality.
  6. After numbing, you shouldn't feel pain. The drilling takes a looooong time. Making the mold for the crown was extremely unpleasant to me. I felt like I couldn't breathe well or was choking. The gum around the tooth was sore for a few days. My jaws were sore for several days. That sounds bad, but it really wasn't overall. I forgot to not eat sticky things and popped off a temporary crown eating a caramel. Oops
  7. I had two births unmedicated, the first augmented with pitocin. The most amazing thing was that once I was into labor, my body knew what to do! I knew what position I needed to be in, what coping mechanism. Like pps, I needed to relax all muscles and count through the contractions. I totally get the pressure for an epidural. I had someone asking me every 30 minutes if I were ready for an epidural yet. It was incredibly annoying to have people coming in and out, wanting to interact. I needed to go go deep inside and be left alone. Trust your body. Trust its wisdom. Prepare in a general way, but be open to throwing away all your preconceived ideas about what you "should" do and what techniques "should" work and go with what your body is telling you in the moment. Hospitals and their requirements and routines that are designed for their convenience and efficiency make it difficult to follow your body. I hope having a midwife will help avoid some of that. I was fortunate enough to have an OB that was laid back enough to go along with me delivering on my side, because that was what my body was telling me. You've got this!
  8. Different plans are structured differently. Your plan may have you pay 100% of an office visit until you reach your deductible, or you may just pay a copay. The copay may or may not count towards your deductible and may or may not count towards your out-of-pocket max. The only way to tell for sure is to consult the plan documents or a representative. There is no absolute standard way deductibles, copay and coinsurance work.
  9. It depends on your specific plan. Some plans, insurance pays your copay when you have reached out-of-pocket max and some don't. You need to check with your carrier.
  10. We bought a small guitar when did was much younger and had it restrung with nylon strings. She later got a classical guitar. The fingerboard is appreciably wider on a classical. It makes some chords harder to play.
  11. If by young teen you are thinking 13 or 14, I think 3 steady hours of the above kind of work is a real stretch. Unless it is an exceptional teen who is highly energetic with an unusual amount of experience. I would also recommend professionals.
  12. The thread that started the "books" euphemism. I think it was Elaine? She was sooo excited about a discount from Christian Book Distributers and the typo was Christian boobs. And the rest is history. There was another typo in that same post: husbank. Her dh was okay with ordering whatever and spending the money. I thought that just as funny, but it didn't get any traction.
  13. I had a friend that played something by Mahler on a French horn in sacrament meeting. It was not well received.
  14. 94 is just fine. Not low, not high. Unless your blood sugar has been running high for a long time, you shouldn't experience low symptoms at that number. Post prandial numbers referring to 1-2 hours after a meal apply to that time frame only. Blood glucose numbers should continue to fall after that time to a normal level, like 75-100. 4 hours after eating, blood glucose should be normal. Home meters have a 10-20% margin of error. If your symptoms don't match your reading, you might wash hands carefully, recheck once, then leave it alone. Retesting multiple times isn't helpful.
  15. Sorry for her pain. You must be proud of her.
  16. These are some wonderful suggestions! Ds will be happy to have a variety of flavors. And yes, he knows he can't eat like this forever. He has done this once before and gained twenty-five pounds which he promptly lost as soon as he stopped force feeding himself.
  17. Ds is trying to bulk up by working out and eating 4000 calories a day  I have 5 pounds of chicken tenders to cook and am looking for suggestions of how to season for a variety of taste. Pan frying about half (seasoned bread crumbs, Parmesan cheese, olive oil in pan), but would like to do something else, too. Thanks in advance.
  18. I am not able to suggest anything wrt the asthma, but you might consider that you have RSV rather than a simple cold. I am just getting over it and the symptoms sound very familiar. Hope you are feeling better soon!
  19. Hodgson Mills and King Arthur both sell organic flour that is non-enriched. $$$
  20. I only homeschooled two and had only one doing the "mamacanyouhelpmenowcanyouhelpmenowIwanttobedonewithschoolrightnowanditisyourfaultbecauseyouarenothelpingmenow". The other was perfectly content to slide into her room and wait for me to discover she wasn't there and get her back. To be fair, I also babysat sgd full time from 8weeks till 3 1/2. And I still felt stressed trying to meet everyone's needs! I had to learn to say, "It's okay to ask for help. It's not okay to nag. I have answered you already and my answer is not going to change. You need to stop asking." And then to follow through by not engaging in the nagging. After a few of those longer explanations, it became an abbreviated "Asked and answered" response. Said once, with full attention and eye contact. It took a few times, but was really quite effective.
  21. The starchy, butter-laden casseroles are in the fridge. The pies (2 ea pumkin and pecan, 1 apple with homemade butter crust) and rolls are distributed in strategic locations. Dd came home to spend T with us and help with the food prep. Ds helped clean yesterday. Dinner isn't until 5:30 so dss, dsd and their young families can eat with in-laws first. No rushing today to cook the turkey, appetizers, other veggies. So why did my stupid reflux wake me up at 5:30? The benefit is that I am the only one awake and enjoying a nice cup of hot water in peace and quiet. Coffee given up to help with reflux-- somehow hot water just doesn't give the same pleasure. A snapshot of the way all of life is-- upsides and downsides, messiness and pain, joy and satisfaction. I love my family and am profoundly thankful for them. That's all.
  22. Did they have to squeeze his finger really hard to get the blood for the first test, or clean with alcohol and prick while still wet? It's possible for interstitial fluid or alcohol to dilute the blood, resulting in a lower reading, though that seems like a very large discrepancy to be be explained by either of those.
  23. I just thought of another option--an elastic belt, such as this. https://www.amazon.com/Slimware-Stretch-Buckle-Elastic-Medium/dp/B00Q5QLB06/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1479599577&sr=8-1&keywords=slimware+stretch+belt I have used that kind before and it is quite comfortable. Not a fashion statement, but I assume you wear your tshirts untucked?
  24. I alter my own pants by cutting off the waistband and adding an extension with elastic, so no, I don't have any of those.
