  1. Nothing wrong with a treat like that. One of my friends mothers used to spring Banana split dinners on them. You never knew when it was going to happen and when it did-the best thing ever. To summarize-as a steady diet-no. Once in awhile-go for it.
  2. Thanks, everyone. This is very helpful. Keep those ideas coming.
  3. Question for the hive. A friend of mine is a teacher in a small private school. He has proposed the idea to his bosses that they should look into being a resource school for homeschoolers. Allowing students to enroll ala carte for classes. For example-your student is really into science and you don't have a science lab in your home. You would be able to sign your student up for the science class. The questions he had for me are: Would you be interested in being able to sign up for classes that way? Would you as a parent be interested in taking a workshop offering teaching tips while your student was in class? Would being able to take an online class be of interest? What would be helpful to you as a homeschooling parent? The school is located in Rockland County, NY.
  4. Nothing sucks like an Electrolux. I <3 my Electrolux. 17 years old and still going strong. Unfortunately, I don't think their products are as good as they used to be. When this baby dies I will be getting an Oreck or a Miele.
  5. Zane Bloser has practice lists online. http://www.zaner-bloser.com/spellingconnections/practice-pages.html
  6. My mother buys jewelry, handbags, scarves, and pottery. I have purchased pottery, painted flower pots, recipes in a jar, and hot sauces.
  7. All my life in public school I heard every one of the Presidents speeches. Either in an assembly or aired over the PA system. This is nothing new. If you don't agree with the President discuss it with your children. If you do agree with the President discuss it with your children. One speech is not going to destroy your family unit or turn your child into a mindless socialist drone. The hoopla over this speech is ridiculous. It is a whole lot of buzz about nothing.
  8. I have a 9 year old and an 11 year old. Feel free to peruse my blog. No diaper talk or discussions of all the really cool things I wish I had done with my kids when they were small. Just a peek at our every day lives.
  9. Goodness, how do I choose? Expensive; KitchenAid Stand Mixer (I don't know how I lived without it all those years) Rice Cooker Santuko knife Less expensive: My new Pampered Chef garlic slicer. I thought it was the most useless thing but oh my, perfect slivers of garlic. All the flavor and my picky children can pick out the pieces of garlic. It does fail the Alton Brown multi-tasker test. I am seriously trying to think of a good name for my KA now. She definitely needs a name.
  10. My 11 year old can whip up anything pasta related, eggs - any style, and sandwiches. He will be branching out into hamburgers this year.
  11. I really don't see what the problem is. If I disagree with what he is saying my children and I will discuss it. If I agree, we will discuss it. No different from anything else they ever came home from school with.
  12. Dh was not on board in the beginning. It took two years but he finally agreed to give it a try. I did tons of research. Left reading material in the bathroom. Read interesting paragraphs out loud at night while reading in bed. What finally pushed him into the "okay, lets try it camp" was when he realized that this was not all or nothing. That we could try it for a year an evaluate. He also realized that we wouldn't screw up our kids any more then the public schools had.
  13. My ds was hit by a car while riding his bike at the beginning of the summer. He is thankful he was wearing his helmet. Helmets are non-negotiable in our house.
  14. I have the Aroma one from Costco, too. Love, love, love it.
  15. No. You never know what can happen. We are probably going to be switcing to a high deductible catastrophe plan soon due to the economy and i would rather have that then nothing.
  16. This will be our 2nd year using History Odyssey. We really enjoy it.
  17. I find recipes all over the place. I have my few tried and true cookbooks. I've used foodnetwork.com, allrecipes.com, blogs. I've even found great ones on the wrapper of one of the ingredients I'm using.
  18. My ds (11) loves his Legos and Playmobil. I don't think they ever really outgrow them. My ds does go through phases though. Months on end when he doesn't touch them and all of sudden he pulls them out and they are the greatest thing ever.
  19. My dd (9) was never really a doll and dollhouse girl. However, she will play dolls with her girlfriends and you better not mess with her incredibly large collection of stuffed animals. She loves those stuffed toys. I remember my niece at age 12. She would still play with her dolls but not when any of her friends were around.
  20. I use baking soda mixed with a small dollop of aloe.
