  1. Our Latin sequence starts in 4th grade and is: 4th- GSWL 5th- Latin Prep 1 6th- Lingua Latina (first third-half of Familia Romana with all the accompanying books) Ds9 starts GSWL in the fall. Ds12 is finishing up his first year in a charter school for the gifted having had GWSL, LP1, and two chapters of LL before transferring to the school. He placed into Latin II (high school credit) and is exempt from the final as he has a 94% in the class. I attribute much of this to our Latin sequence while homeschooling. :)
  2. We use MCT Magic Lens and 4Practice for 7th grade grammar. Over the years, this is ds's favorite thing to do each day (been at it since Town level). We looked at AG and Hake, but ds wouldn't drop MCT. If it ain't broke.....
  3. We used k12 PhonicsWorks. I was a newb at teaching lower grades with ds-then6 and my head was spinning. A friend gave me PW to use and ds took off. If I had more kids to teach reading to, I would use it again.
  4. The same scenario is happening here with ds11. Ds8 is so different from spawn-elder.....more crafty, hands-on, project-based. In looking at how to HS him, I was inspired to explore ds11's options, too. I ended up going with my gut and going in "halvsies" with a box curriculum. I only bought their lit/LA. IF it works out, I will wade farther into the unknown and try their other components.
  5. I use these boards A LOT to search for information about different math progressions. To that end, for other searchers, I want to post what we have finally decided to do. DS11 just took the DOMA Algebra Readiness Exam (bought from HSBC) and scored "mastery" in all areas. This is after MM6. I am not going to take another year of PreAlg because 1, he doesn't want to, and 2, he is ready and excited for algebra. I figure I can take my time doing it. We have decided to do Foerster Alg I and Patty Paper Geometry for Fall 2013. HTH anyone stuck in that "what do I do" agony zone after MM6. bcn
  6. Uh-oh (puts trimmers away). :leaving:
  7. Thank goodness for cutesy awareness. One popped up on my newsfeed and it prompted me to start doing exams. I found the lump that would have gotten bigger and spread. Also, as one of a group of medical professionals, we laugh and act crude or else we would cry and be devoured by what we deal with every day. It is a common coping mechanism. Another is apathy. I choose the former. It keeps us engaged and aware. My opinions, of course.
  8. What PPs said. Mine was stuck up in a tree for three hours. Came down and into the house when she was ready.
  9. For 5th, we started with Figuratively Speaking, Mosdos Coral, and the MCT literature pack. We ended up dropping FS and DS11 finished the MCT lit by xmas. Now we just do Mosdos, which ds likes (he is a STEM kid).
  10. We are 5/6 through Mosdos Coral. I use the workbook, tests, and TM. It IS pricey, but COMPLETELY covers literature for us. It also is open-and-go. I second what others have said about this program. Ds11 is a STEM kid and during our planning for fall, he said that he would like to continue with Mosdos. He has never said that about any kind of lit before. "Great literature curriculum" in my house is any literature that gets done. :)
  11. I put it in a pot of cold water. I put it on the counter and it is thawed quickly. Putting the pot in the sink under dribbling water circulates the water and speeds the process.
  12. +1 for this. We are using the former in the 1999/2e. I found the tm and the practice book for next to nothing. We are also going to throw in multimedia. Ds and I chose this after ds explored many ideas (Hewitt, Plato, self-guided, and Rainbow were his top choices).
  13. But I just spent the last hour REALLY going through the samples on Aops prealgebra and I might be in love. Maybe I'm just too sold on doing Foerster and that's why I won't give Aops a chance. They are just so different. I think trying Aops will allow me to see DS's true colors. (yes, I quoted myself....I can do that, right? lol)
  14. We are finishing up MM6 this year (we also do some of the 7th/gold worksheets). After agonizing over a long list of math programs to get us to Foerster from MM6, we are going to do MUS Alg/Patty Paper Geo next year. (I looked at either doing a rigorous prealg like tabletclass or alg-lite like MUS. DS11's arithmetic is solid, and he seems to grasp algebraic concepts easily. He has a couple of algebra games that he has already beaten. I thought about AOPS for prealg, but going MM6-aops-foerster seems a little disjointed in approach to me.) I digress......
  15. I used coconut oil. Dc would take it usually in a drink or smoothie....sometimes off of a spoon. :)
  16. In my dh's ex-wife's contacts, I am beyotch. I just screenshot it and sent it back with a "lol" next to it. She then said "oops". That was years ago and we are on better terms now.....I think? haha
  17. Window film. Works like a charm. Awnings are also popular where I live.
  18. I am still in the rough stages of planning, but so far it looks like: Math: Foerster Algebra + Patty Paper Geometry Language Arts/Lit: MBtP Science: Fascinating Chemistry + NOEO Chemistry History: K-12 (with writing assigments) Foreign Language: Spanish I (!Expresate!), Latin (Lingua Latina: Familia Romana.....first 12 chapters) We are the champions of the rabbit-trail, so this is plenty. ETA: so math, sci, and latin have already changed to the above. Go figure. ETA: and now LA has changed
  19. It's not the child's cross to bear, it's the adult's. Coming clean just to clear one's conscience should be deferred if it hurts another.
  20. I had a Paragard. It failed and ds is now 10. When that happened, ds was FINALLY on board with sterilization. He had a vas and it was the best thing we've ever done. FREEEEEEDOOOOMMMMMMMMMM! My MIL's youngest son is several years younger than her other batch of kids due to IUD, too. I do NOT NOT NOT recommend IUDs. I personally know too many people with IUD babies.
  21. We have had this one for 3 years. My kids love it. It was pricey for us to buy alone, so both sets of grandparents helped out at xmas-time. It was a hit and it gets used D.A.I.L.Y. In fact, they are playing Beyblades on it right now. It has not torn, rusted, or otherwise failed. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Skywalker-12-Round-Trampoline-Safety-Enclosure-Combo/17175987?findingMethod=rr I grew up with a rectangular one with no net, so this is an improvement!
  22. http://www.act.org/explore/ests/centers.html hth Bacon ETA: That link is just locations. My ds10 is signed up through DukeTIP.
