  1. We are watching the above and sportlemon.tv (many of the links work and some don't) We watched the swimming live in German this morning. Cool!
  2. We have no litterboxes. My kitties are toilet-trained (you can see videos on youtube...very cool). It took me about 2 months to train them. I have also trained a friend's cat (old cat), so age doesn't seem to matter.
  3. :hurray: We are retired USMC, so we've also been in 'socialized medicine'....for 22 years. And now, we pay so very little for what we get. I never have to wonder "if" I should go to the doc/er if needed. Not to say "well, la-tee-da", but to illustrate that it ALREADY exists here in the US and it works.
  4. I entered this lifestyle November 2009 and have never looked back. Some of my favorite websites are: http://www.marksdailyapple.com//welcome-to-marks-daily-apple/#axzz20oUTewZO and http://perfecthealthdiet.com/the-diet/ Eating this way has eliminated my health issues (namely arthritis, sugar cravings, and migraines) and given me boundless energy.
  5. I need about 9 (9:15 to be precise...lol). Several days <8 and I get more into the zombie zone. Not pretty!
  6. IMO, It boils down to whether or not one believes healthcare is a right. One cannot espouse fundamental and sweeping change without a fundamental change in worldview. It also ties into a couple of other big things: ~Fear: of losing control, losing something you have, or not getting something you want. Trying something new, change, etc. The fear-mongering in this country is astonishing. ~Pervasive and Extreme Individualism (ecocentrism): NOT to be confused with freedom. I am American and currently live in the US. I pay very little for health insurance ($460/year family plan). I have a healthy family. HOWEVER, I *AM* a proponent of UHC AND even NHC. To me, it's the next step of a civilized society. I hope I live to see the day. I certainly vote toward that end. I also grew up in a country that had socialized healthcare (Ministry of Health provided ALL services). Health as a basic need (see Maslow) is a different animal from healthcare as a business with a profit to be made. Completely different animal, indeed. I truly believe that healthcare should be divorced from making a profit.
  7. 1. Homeschooling 2. The rivers and marshes. 3. The weather.
  8. 1. Freedom of religion. (FROM, in my case) 2. Homeschooling. 3. The Interstate system.
  9. Neither am I. I have a Luke and a Ben. People ask me if I like "Star Wars"...I'm like "Whaat?" Duh.
  10. We are not Christian if that helps. PACE has no statements to sign... :)
  11. Ds10 just finished up 4th. We had a great year and I wouldn't change anything that we did. We got great results and ds had a great time.* Math: Math Mammoth LA: MCT Town, Check the Deck Writing then WWW5 (made it to wk10) Science: Singapore MPH 5/6 (did 5...finishing up 6 this year) History: Intellego Unit Studies, Usborne Linked World History (spine) Foreign Languages: GSWS and GSWL (He also read a lot of books and participated in community service and sports) *Can I also add that he CONSUMED (with impressive retention!!) the following iPad Apps: Stack the States, Stack the Countries, Presidents vs. Aliens, Dragonbox (alebra-ish app game) :001_smile:
  12. I STRONGLY DO NOT recommend tschaa. I joined them as an accountability association when I first started homeschooling. I paid the fee and never received membership materials or info or anything. My many, many phone calls and emails went unanswered. I reported them to the BBB. In the end, I did not recover my membership fee and they never made it right. There are MANY great accountability associations in SC. Here is a list of many and some other stuff: http://www.sciway.net/edu/k12/homeschooling.html http://www.carolinahomeschooler.com/asupport.html I personally am a member of PACESC. They are great. :001_smile:
  13. I'm another one! The returns I create are not financial, they are emotional/mental/spiritual. Can't put a price on that. :001_smile: We also eschew many things that our neighbors "must have". Multiple cars, television, every toy ever made, etc. We don't have a lot of "stuff" and we like it that way. Whenever a toy or new piece of clothing or whatever comes in, one has to go out. :tongue_smilie:
  14. At our house, we had the same thing...ds6 just didn't.want.to.read. Math and whatnot were fine, don't know why. Come to find out that he was +4.00 in each eye when I took him for an eye exam. He couldn't see well enough to learn to read. The day he got his glasses was pivotal. Maybe check the "eye exam" box just in case if you haven't already. Otherwise I second what has been said about backing off. HTH Michele
  15. Thank you for taking the time to look and respond! Mosdos Coral Literature (since we are only doing 3 whole novels)Does this include vocab or writing? --- Not really. There is a weekly "worksheet" of fill-in-the-blank vocab, but no word study. Also, the writing is answering comprehension questions, not a writing program per se. I have it mostly for reading and discussion. MCT Voyage: Grammar/Practice/Vocab (no writing or poetry) MCT Literature (3 novels)Does this include vocab and writing? --- No. There are "quote quizzes" and discussion questions. Some writing, but again, it's just answering questions, not any kind of writing study (grammar, mechanics, etc). Aesop B MegawordsThis is a spelling program, but could also easily include vocabulary---We use this and I enter the words into vocabulary.com each week I also hear that this takes very little time to do. Is that true? Singapore MPH 5/6 (did 5 last year, finishing 6)Do you need two maths? This is "My Pals Are Here" Science by Singapore. NOEO Chemistry (not my idea, ds wants to do 2 sci currics)Where is the other science? See above :001_smile:
  16. We are USMC retired. Been to Japan twice. What an opportunity!! 1. Keep the Latin. 2. Add Japanese. No rule says that you can 't do both!!! :D Michele
  17. Thank you for the feedback! Isn't Megawords a spelling program? I like the idea of slowing the Mosdos to whatever pace works out. I feel better already. Keep the ideas coming! Michele
  18. Ok. Maybe I'm insane, but I think I overdid the curriculum shopping. I have a science-loving student who really doesn't prefer to read or write unless it's science related. However, I am distracted by shining things. Here is what I *want to do* for my 5th grader in the fall: Math Mammoth 6 (completed 5 last year) Mosdos Coral Literature (since we are only doing 3 whole novels) MCT Voyage: Grammar/Practice/Vocab (no writing or poetry) MCT Literature (3 novels) Aesop B Megawords Singapore MPH 5/6 (did 5 last year, finishing 6) NOEO Chemistry (not my idea, ds wants to do 2 sci currics) American History (K12 - History of US) SYRWTL Spanish 1 Latin Prep The Latin/Spanish, Sciences, Math and MCT are already hits. It's the Mosdos, Aesop, and Megawords that are new/unknown. My preference would be to make my STEM-kid drop the 2nd science so we could do ALL of the LA! :tongue_smilie: I'm not sure, though. I think the Language Arts may be too heavy. I had everything planned out and then fell in love with the progym and bought Aesop. Oh, and look! There's Mosdos! I added that, too. (I don't plan to do Harvey's grammar or focus on spelling/vocab overly much in Aesop as I am doing MCT and Megawords.) Any feedback on this would be helpful. PLEASE!!! Michele
  19. I don't mean upside down. Sorry I wasn't clear!! I have leg pain sometimes and I can make it "calm down" by leaning on my kitchen bar and taking as much weight off my feet as possible. Or I have dh pick me up or lie down on the bed and have the kids pull on my legs. Things like that. Yeah, I don't think I could hang upside down without passing out. I would like to try, though!
  20. My FIRST thought is lumbar spine. Can you dangle/hang somehow to decompress that area and see if your leg improves? ALL of our lower limb nerves come out of the lumbar region of the back. Sometimes the toes, calves, knees, or hips hurt or tingle and it is really caused by vertebral compression.
  21. My ds10 took this med for a few years. We tried MANY meds before finding it.... 1. It was the best thing we could find for him that allowed him to manage in a classroom situation. 2. He was on a sub-therapeutic dose and it worked great. His "dose" was to be 4mg, but as we ramped it up week-by-week and he seemed to be best (lowest side effects, highest therapeutic value) at 2mg. We got him down to 1mg and when he came home for good, we weaned him off. 3. *He took it as soon as he got home from school*. (330pm). He was REALLY tired at bedtime, slept all night, and awoke refreshed and happy. With med already on board, he could do his day at school and not be drooling/tired, etc. I was told to give it in the morning, but then he was worthless from lunchtime on and even fell asleep on the bus. 4. Did I mention that mornings were GREAT?! "Good morning, mama, I love you...." And I didn't have to "get him ready"....he could get ready for school on his own (a miracle in itself). I would use this medication again if ds needed to go to ps for some reason. HTH
