  1. I'm not sure what colleges are within a few hours drive of you (sorry I'm not familiar with your part of the country!) but I would suggest hitting as many of them as you can, whether you could picture your student there or not. We visited one highly regarded school within a few miles from our home, much to the loud protesting of my dd. Her first comment after the info session: "That was great - small classes all taught by professors!" She hasn't wavered from that opinion since. Visiting now (or early fall) will give your student a chance to discover what makes him/her excited about a college, or alternatively never want to step foot on that campus again. Take good notes. :)
  2. http://www.hannaandersson.com/style.asp?from=SC%7C26%7C2%7C24%7C25%7C1%7C%7C&simg=34962_E96 Would this work? otherwise I've found lots of Hannas on Ebay. :)
  3. Might be a backwards way of doing it, but this site lists books by age ranges. I've used it for over 10 years. :) http://www.classical-homeschooling.org/celoop/1000.html
  4. My dd is doing practice essays between now and her March test date, from the College Board Blue Book. One thing she's doing is being deliberate about getting all her writing done within that 25 minute limit. She tries for 20 minutes so she has a few minutes to go back over it.
  5. We went last weekend, we were in KOP for a dance workshop. We had a great time. They didn't charge us for anything, and let us park right in front of the visitors' center longer than the sign-posted 15 minutes :) there was snow on the ground, we went close to dusk and saw tons of deer. We didn't get out at every stop, but loved seeing the arch, the cabins, the church - and the DVD in the visitors' center was worthwhile.
  6. http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm Comprehensive list of what can be carried on and checked. DD takes blunt scissors all the time. Funny thing I have fingernail clippers in the bottom of my toiletries bag and they never get checked. The checkers aren't very consistent across the country :glare:
  7. I put styrofoam in my recycling bin - not sure what they do with it, but they take it. :)
  8. My dd got a letter from them last week. She is too cold-natured for MN but their sense of humor has them on her radar :)
  9. Reviews from the Jane Austen society for both movies are here http://www.janeausten.co.uk/magazine/index.ihtml?id=24&step=2
  10. WOW. So your friend didn't have any contact with the grandfather for 20 years or so? I wonder how they graduated college without a SS number or a birth certificate, or maybe he faked them.
  11. Nah, it just took me a week to pick my jaw up off the floor. I'm just amazed at your story and the one where the students took the PSAT in the gym, using the row behind them as a desk!
  12. Got it :) Didn't he have construction outside his window during the PSAT? I hope you find a friendlier atmosphere where you feel like the staff/teachers are on your team :)
  13. Yes, the very accommodating local ps where she took the PSAT in October. They have bent over backwards and I couldn't ask for anything better. The only thing was they wanted to know in January which ones she wanted to take. Check. I have to bring the payment to the school before May. Double check. Easy :) Honestly? I would love this environment. Don't know whether your son can dig something out of his closet that would suit (a polo shirt maybe?) but it sounds like it would be an environment that wants the students to succeed.
  14. We once had my dd (around 5) say this: "We're probably curled up in the rocking chair, reading a good book. Please leave a message and when I get out of my mom's lap, she'll get back to you" Sadly we lost it in a thunderstorm and I couldn't get my dd to say it again.:glare:
  15. I took my dd to a bookstore (several actually to get enough diversity) and had her sit down on one of the comfy chairs. We pulled as many books as we could find, for the subjects she wants to take. Then I went to the grocery store :) About 45 minutes later she had decided which one(s) would be a good fit for her. If your student will take several SAT subject tests, the College Board (blue) book is a good investment. It won't have strategy at all, only a previous actual test for ALL the subjects. But that's the only way to practice using a real test. All the other study guides use "practice tests" but they're just based on the tests, not actual previous tests (clear as mud?) :)
  16. I wouldn't have a problem using the online notes (or any other study aid) in addition to reading the actual book, not in lieu of reading it. And yes, the plural is synopses :) Don't discredit yourself so much :) I just read the trilogy for the first time (and I'm 50) and I had a hard time with it. Sometime I hope to go back and re-read them more carefully - but this time was a first pass, let me get through these books type of reading :) But I have to say I'm not much of a fantasy fan.
  17. Thanks for commiserating with me Carole! Actually she's taking the SAT II's that day as well - and you're right, the APs are the following week. Argh. dd's final comment was "May is JUST crazy." :tongue_smilie:
  18. I've been watching airfares for the past few weeks (it seems they drop mid-week, go figure) and today found RT for ~ $200 - fabulous. I'm ready to book and tell my 17 yo dd (who is more excited about this conference than I am - after hearing SWB speak last summer, she said it was the best gift I could give her all summer).... so dd says "let me check the calendar first". :glare: Ugh. She's planning to take SAT's that Saturday. Sigh. Boo hoo!!! :crying: :(
  19. Aw, I'm sorry about your situation. If your son were older, I'd ask him what he would like to do - but since he's 5, I would suggest either trying to reschedule (I know you've already put it off) or just have a celebration with those who can make it. I have a dd with a Christmas birthday and every year (she's 17) I apologize to her :) it's so hard planning something that time of year. I'm not sure when the Super Bowl starts - we're not football fans - but it tends to run into the evening I think, so yes I think you're right in thinking they would have time to get wherever they're going to be during the game. Maybe they think that would make for a full Sunday?
  20. My dd lived on smoothies, grated cheese, applesauce, yogurt.... I can't remember what else - so maybe that's it. She first had a removable appliance (sort of like a retainer) which we all LOVED - she could take it out to clean it, and she could advance it herself - then in phase 2 of her palate expansion, we moved and I couldn't find an orth who would do a removable one. So then I had to turn it to advance it.... Unlike other posters said, she did need braces but she didn't have any permanent teeth extracted (other than her wisdom teeth last summer :) ) so we consider it worthwhile.
  21. once you order, you're in the system as a homeschooler. I'm sorry your machine will take so long - that's nuts. We love Apple around here and the turnaround time has been just a few days even with replacing major parts. We have 4 Apples here - love them.
  22. Oh my!! My dd took 2 subject tests, there were 8 in her room - this is our first experience with SAT and this school (she took the PSAT in October at another school). Her proctor couldn't have been nicer - he reminded her of the teacher in "Emperor's Club" :) The school was a zoo - about 800 kids total but the rest were doing the Reasoning. I didn't think about the spring dates being more popular - I can't imagine how that will be!! She came home and took a nap - something she NEVER does. Getting up at 6am is highly unusual for her :)
