  1. We used it last year for my youngest. She likes the workbook format. Overall it worked well.
  2. Last year I bought it from Rainbow Resource, but I noticed the same thing as you this year. So I bought them from the Singapore Math website this year. The price was the same as RR and they had free shipping, so it was still a good deal.
  3. After trying a few different things, we have liked Word Roots, the computer download version, the best. It is from Critical Thinking Press and is essentially the same as the workbook, but clicking the right word instead of writing it seems much better to my kids.
  4. At least I am not the only one! My DD15 kind of wants to do it, but it kind of annoyed that they said she is one of the best dancers, but didn't cast her. Oh well. It is just hard when there is nothing else for DD11. Theater is her thing; her big sister just joins along because she loves dance. The other children's theater in town had auditions the same day this show had callbacks. We choose callbacks and missed auditioning for the other show. So no show for her this summer. I would have never predicted that because everyone who gets called back always gets cast in the show, plus others as well. I guess I will try to get over it, but I am not sure I can.
  5. Overnight camps cancelled. Some day camps are running.
  6. Our local children's theater group has been cleared to do their summer production but with limited numbers. Of those who auditioned they cut about half, including cutting all kids under 9. My girls were at callbacks but we're not cast. We have done every production since the company started in their backyard. So my girls were quite upset. Also, my DD 11's friend got a part and she came mostly unprepared/not memorized to the audition. From what I heard from others they were the best dancers at the dance callbacks and DD11 did great on her other parts. She usually gets leads or supporting roles, so we were quite shocked for her to get nothing. My DD15 was taller than every boy at callbacks for the couple's dancers, so we figured she probably didn't get in because of that. This is also a group I have done a ton of work for in the past. Anyway, we were just ready to forget it and move on to other stuff, but now they really want my oldest to come help with choreography. (Which she has done many times before). For some reason it just feel kind of offensive? Usually most teen helpers are in the show too or were asked to help ahead of time. It probably wouldn't bug me so much if they had asked before sending the cast list out. Maybe saying something about limited numbers so they would rather have her help with choreography instead of be in it. I don't know. My younger DD was already very sad to be left out of the show, and this just seems like it would make her feel even worse. How would you feel? Am I being too sensitive?
  7. Ed Zaccaro books https://www.hickorygrovepress.com/
  8. From what I hear from students and teachers in our district, our public schools don't use textbooks but rarely. The teachers mostly determine the curriculum. It seems to be mostly random worksheets and online programs like Aleks Math and Duolingo. (A neighbor girl told me they spend 20 minutes of every class period and every Friday on Duolingo Spanish. Sad.)
  9. We have done Math Kangaroo, AMC, and Mathcounts as individuals. My son also does Olympiad (I think it is as an individual) at his math circle at the university. Finding the math circle this year has been a great opportunity for him. Mathcounts was actually really easy to sign up for as an individual. FYI, mailing my state coordinator was more helpful than the National office, but they were helpful as well. As an individual, my son won 1st at the chapter comp and is going to State in a couple of weeks. So very doable.
  10. My DD went from Jacob's Geometry to Foerster Algebra 2. It has been a smooth transition. She reads the textbook and does the exercises mostly on her own.
  11. MATH: Finish AOPS Geometry and start AOPS Intermediate Algebra SCIENCE: Fascinating Chemistry with other supplemental books HISTORY: World Civilizations from Great Courses with supplemental readings from stuff we have at home READING: Literature books and discussion using Teaching the Classics method GRAMMAR: not sure, maybe just practice on Quill WRITING: Writeshop 2 COMPUTER: Edx Harvard's computer science courses VOCAB: Word Roots 2 LOGIC: Practical Critical Thinking or the James Madison Critical Thinking Course (we currently have both) LATIN: maybe a break where he just does Duolingo this year. Or we will start Wheelocks. EXTRA: piano with mom, cross country, basketball, volleyball, maybe flag football, church youth group, mathclub
  12. We only do the textbook reviews if I think they need the extra practice.
  13. Thanks. I'll try this. Her brain just works differently from mine and I couldn't think of other ways to explain it.
  14. My DD 10 (almost 11) is still struggling with knowing when to capitalize nouns. She can't seem to distinguish between common nouns and proper nouns very well. For example: Today she wanted the word "pirate" to be capitalized because it is the name of a person. (From the sentence: That pirate won't get away this time.) I tried to explain that there are many pirates and it was not this pirate's particular name. She was confused and thought that there are many people named Sarah, not just one, so we should not capitalize Sarah. My older two kids had no problems with this concept, but she is really struggling. Maybe I need a better way to explain it to her. Any ideas?
  15. Edx has classes from MIT and others. My son first learned Python at the local university. They have a STEM outreach program that offers various programs for school aged students. He was able to learn from a college professor and the price was extremely cheap. It was in partnership with 4-H, so maybe look through them as well.
  16. I agree that Alcumus and Khan are not fun like Prodigy. My older kids have really missed using Prodigy as a fun review, but I haven't found anything yet for high school math.
  17. I took a 1 credit class in college called anthropologic films, or something like that. We watched a documentary every week then wrote a one page report.
  18. I don't know of anything, but would love to find something. My kids love Prodigy, but the older two need something high school level now.
  19. Sounds like he is doing well. Most people run Half and Full Marathon training on their own or with friends using website and app programs. My husband and his brother did an Ironman just using training suggestions from a website. Like someone suggested above, taking the aid at the aid stations is important. If he knows what items they will have at the aid stations, then he can use the same things on his practice runs.
  20. I can't answer any questions about Geometry, because we are not there yet. But I like Dimensions better than Primary US Edition (I have both) because it the Textbook is more thorough and has more topics.
  21. All my kids did Singapore Primary through 5B. Then my older kids did other programs, Jousting Armadillos and AOPS, but my youngest wanted to stick with Singapore. So, we have been doing Dimensions 6A this year. We are only in chapter 2, so I can't answer all your questions, but so far we really like it and I am glad I chose to go to Dimensions instead of doing Primary 6. I think that they may be enough problems in the Textbook for a kid that doesn't need much practice. Looking through it, I can see how my son who doesn't need much practice would have been fine.
  22. So, often I purposefully celebrate my kids birthdays on a different day because I don't want them to think the world revolves around them. On their birthday we always open their presents and tell them Happy Birthday. But cake, birthday dinner, and parties (if we do one) usually happen whenever is most convenient.
  23. So, I actually like unannounced visitors. It is common in my neighborhood, mostly walking distance. I usually text people ahead of time if I have to drive there. Also, family can always stop by unannounced. I was actually really sad to miss a sister-in-law who stopped by unannounced once when we were out of town. I am just happy that people actually want to visit with me!
  24. Singapore Primary Math Song School Latin (but we did not like Latin for Children) That is the only one all three kids used so far. There may be more as they all go through the middle and high school years. It looks like they will all use Writeshop. Also, I used AAS for my youngest and would have probably used it for the older two, if I could have afforded it at the time.
