  1. My DH and Father-in-law both work for cities. I have been very saddened to hear how often things like this happen.
  2. Here is what my kids did: Kid 1: Singapore Primary through 5B, then Arbor Algebra (Jousting Armadillos, etc), Jacob's Geometry, Foerster Algebra 2, College Class Kid 2: Singapore Primary through 5B then AOPS Pre-algebra and continued the AOPS series Kid 3: Singapore Primary through 5B then Dimensions 6-7. We plan on doing 8 next year and then probably Jacobs Geometry. (Dimensions does Algebra 1 and some Geometry). I switched to Dimensions for 6 because it was a more thorough program. If you go on to Dimensions 7 or Jacobs Algebra, there may be a few topics you need to add in like Negative numbers, Pythagorean theorem etc. But I think either plan is doable.
  3. We used Fascinating Chemistry this year with my advanced 8th grader. It seemed good, but maybe needs more? I honestly am not an expert. I watched maybe half of the lecture/videos and concepts were explained well. We found a few of the quizzes to be hard. My son did the labs and I added some assignments, but he still finished the whole thing in Mid March.
  4. I would want your first option, private lessons, but small group classes are extremely popular with homeschoolers in my area. I particularly think it is popular because parents can have two kids do the same activity at the same time.
  5. He will probably not be ready for PreCal until Dec/Jan, I would guess. As for days of the week... I am not sure right now. He will be in 9th next year and homeschoolers can do sports with the local high school. Meets and games vary, but it looks like Mon, Fri, Sat would be most open. Maybe just do what works best for you and then we will try to match your schedule.
  6. Well, my DS is halfway through Intermediate Algebra at home right now and I am struggling to keep up. At least he is still getting it. (I taught my DD through PreCal in another book fine, but AOPS is so much harder!) I figure he is going to need to take the PreCal class online, but we have to figure out how to pay for it first. So, maybe Precalculus.
  7. Maybe Tello would work for you? I don't think it uses Wifi. Free calls and texts. You can customize plans to fit your needs.
  8. I agree with what alisha said above. The information in the textbook was good, but on the easy side for the grade level. I really like the explanations in the textbook, but I wish there was more in the book. I also didn't feel that the teachers manual and the lab book were worth the money. I can find similar experiments easily online. I did, however, like the textbook well enough to buy another topic or two.
  9. My youngest will be 7th grade this year. Math: Singapore Dimensions 8 English: Winston Advanced Grammar, Word Roots 2, Spelling Made Easy, Writeshop 1, choose literature from the school shelf Logic: Fallacy Detective Science: World of Physics with videos, labs, etc History: SOTW 4 and some sort of geography, probably just stuff I already have Art: Artistic Pursuits Middle School 2 and Udemy class Extra: Piano, Violin, Dance, Choir, Theater (she loves the arts)
  10. DM 6 is a little different. The workbook can be written in as opposed to DM 7, where you cannot. We used the DM 6 workbook more than the problems in the textbook, but for DM 7, we exclusively use the textbook problems. This has more to do with my DD's preferences. If my older DD, who needs more practice, had used DM, we would have used both books to some extent.
  11. I bought both, but we haven't used the workbook. We are in 7B, and so far the textbook has had plenty of problems for my DD. So, I would say it is extra practice.
  12. I use Libib. I tried Goodreads once, but didn't like it. It was messing up my To Read section. Libib has been good and dies sync across devices. I use it to catalogue books so I don't buy second copies of books I already own!
  13. I used Phonics Pathways for spelling with my first 2 kids. We did not have the money for anything else at that point. It worked well. They are both better speller than me. I did buy All About Spelling with my 3rd child. I still needed to be frugal. So, I only bought the Teacher's manuals and the initial magnet set. I was able to create any notecards and whatnot, that are usually found in the student set, using what the teacher's manual described.
  14. My DS hasn't been much help planning out his high school years. All he wants is for a plan that will be rigorous so he can possibly go to MIT, Harvard, CalTech, etc. He is my 2nd high schooler, but my 1st one didn't have such dreams, so she has been easier. So, here is what I have so far. Math: Finish AOPS Intermediate Algebra (if we're not done before then) and then do AOPS Precalculus May take AOPS AMC 10 class online in the Fall Science: Thinkwell, we are thinking Biology Latin: Wheelock's Latin English: Vocab: Finish Word Roots 3, maybe then do Vocabulary Detective Grammar: he has done all the grammar curriculum I have, so maybe this SAT/ACT grammar book I found Reading/Writing: Windows to the World and Excellence in Literature, also Lively Art of Writing if we don't have time to get to it this year Social Studies: Oak Meadow World Geography Computer Science: Edx Harvard's CS50 Introduction to Game Development Music Theory: Breezin Thru Theory and Great Courses Music and Math Other: High School Cross Country and Track, also may try out for the basketball team Continue Piano Continue Ninja Warrior Training
  15. We will be in the same situation in a couple years. Thanks for the good info.
  16. I am glad I am not the only one who's wedding ended up that way. (The Thanksgiving example is my mom). She took over my wedding too. Luckily my husband stood up for me when it came to the invites. I am so glad he did because it was the only thing from our wedding I liked for many years. I HATED my wedding memories book for years because it was not the one I wanted. A few years ago I realized that there was no reason I have to keep the one I hated. I bought scrap book supplies, pulled everything out of the old book, and made a new wedding memories book. I now love that book.
  17. Wow, you perfectly described what happens. Our church leader is so scared of offend anyone that he really has no control. (There was an incident years ago that caused a family to leave, and it really hurt him). She said she wanted to do it and he didn't stop her. She has often done most things by herself. I actually think she prefers it that way. But she insists on having people on committees she is in charge of and then complains about all the work after doing it all herself.
  18. Umm... My DH says I don't respond clearly enough. I don't want to hurt their feelings, both of these people are very sensitive, so my responses are not strong enough. Then usually I get so upset and frustrated, as it continues, that I say something rude or mean and quit the event, party, committee, etc. And everyone thinks I overreacted to someone just trying to help. Which at that point it probably is a bit of an overreaction. Very unhealthy cycle. So I definitely need to work on my responses. I told my DH part of my problem is lack of practice because I have spent the last 16 years at home full time with my kids.
  19. Hopefully I can explain this adequately. I occasionally have problems with a certain type of personality and it is often hard to explain to others why I am upset because the person who hurt me is such a 'sensitive' and 'kind' person. Personally, I prefer to deal with a 'Karen', a type A, or a more assertive person because how they feel is very clear. An example for a few years ago. I invite everyone in the family to my house for Thanksgiving. I want to be the host. The 'nice' person plans to bring more food than their assignment, they take over planning, bring all the cups, plates, decor, etc. Since my husband made the turkey, I literally had nothing to do. I am upset, but my feelings are disregarded because the 'nice' person did it 'out of love' to help me. Except I don't feel love. If they really cared for me they would have let me host the way I wanted to. Others tell me I should be grateful that the 'nice' person was so helpful and caring. But really they disregarded my feelings and took over so it would be the way they wanted it. I feel like if a 'Karen' or a type A person had done the same thing, more people would agree with me because it would be clear that the priority was on it being their way, not my feelings. But the 'nice' person did the same thing in a sneaky way. Current situation has to do with a women who self appointed herself to be on our committee. Now, I know doing everything virtually and by text has made it more difficult, but she has done the same thing. Disregarded my feelings and thoughts (doesn't even acknowledge them) and took over doing it all her way even though our church leader asked for it not to be that way. But she keeps saying she is doing it out of love for others blah, blah, blah. I quit, so I guess she can do it however now. But it seems like others don't really understand how I feel. Does anyone else have these problems? Why do my feelings not seem to matter? And why because the 'nice' person says it is out of kindness is it okay to take over and disregard others.
  20. Normally, yes. Not this year though. Most things (mid week youth activities, Sunday School classes, etc) are virtual. And while virtual is better than nothing, it is not the same. Our main Sunday meeting is in-person and virtual (they have asked us to switch off to keep in-person numbers low). So even on the weeks we go in person, we are spread out, wearing masks, and asked to not hang out and socialize. I just feel disconnected from everyone. Also, Zoom Sunday School is awkward at times and I am just not getting out if it what I used to. Maybe I need to be doing better and putting in more of an effort.
  21. My 11 year old is about 4'10" and 60-70 lbs. She is very average. My 16yo, however, was always in the 90th percentile, but did drop during the 11-12 age. Not all the way to 50th but like 75th. She went through puberty later than others her age (1st period at 15 1/2) so I believe that accounts for the dropping. She just grew later. She is now over the 95th percentile at 5'10" and still growing.
  22. One of mine has done AOPS the other two, while also good at math, have done other programs. A possible way to do AOPS Pre-A is to watch the videos first and then work through the problems. You could skip reading most of what's in the book that way, just make sure to read what's in the highlighted boxes. The videos go halfway through the Intro Algebra book. I know this is not the ideal way to do AOPS, but still a good option for using the program. We really liked Jousting Armadillos like others have suggested, but it has a lot of reading too. Jacob's Algebra is great as well (JA is based off of it) and he may be ready to start that. My DD has used these programs and has scored very well on the Math section of the SAT. My youngest has stuck with Singapore Dimensions 7 so far. It is good too, but probably my least favorite of the ones we've done. That may just be because we haven't done it long though.
  23. We did not use videos. My very studious DD taught herself by reading the chapters. I went through and marked her work everyday. I helped if she had questions or for a problem she got wrong twice. I did have to brush up on my skills some to help.
  24. I always thought memes were for funny jokes and cute sayings. I didn't know people got their news from them!
  25. Wow, that's a lot for shipping for two small books. Yeah, I like the two Oak Meadow Coursrbooks we have, but they are kind of expensive and I think the shipping wasn't cheap either. I don't think I paid that much though! It is hard to pay so much for shipping when most places offer free shipping on orders over a certain amount.
