  1. Michael's Kitchen is my very favorite place to eat in Taos. I dream about their breakfast enchiladas with green chili. Oh my goodness - pretty close to heaven.
  2. It's funny - I never think of desert and NM together. I always think of cool mountains and soft summer rain.
  3. Mountains, beautiful art, fantastic Hatch chili on eggs. My family has a cabin in N. New Mexico and I grew up going there every summer. We'd visit Taos and Santa Fe and I adore that part of the country.
  4. Dd10 read A Thousand Papaer Cranes last year. Yesterday we were talking about atomic bombs and the Trinity Project. She was furious that she'd never known about any of it. I asked if she remembered reading that book and she said "How could I remember the details?!? I was too busy crying!" So we gently went through it again.
  5. I'd be making yogurt with the milk!
  6. I would bet you a million bucks that is a rationalization so he can live with himself. It is ugly and awful. And I'd bet if he didn't have that rationale he wouldn't be able to live with himself. Eta: There is a reason so many veterans do not talk about their war experiences. My brother has been through some extensive therapy and he still can't talk about most of his time overseas. From my sheltered little world it is hard to imagine. And I'm far less disconnected from his reality than a lot of people.
  7. Even now people don't get the horrors our soldiers have gone through. It makes me physically ill watching people minimize PTSD and the real impact it has on people's lives. I can't imagine the years my brother spent in Iraq and the things he witnessed and I have heard the stories. People who have zero exposure to the real suffering our troops go through need to shut up.
  8. Amen! You never know what impact you will make with your 'small potatoes'.
  9. I'm running through the Spanish the kids and I learned yesterday. We're taking weekly conversational lessons and I suck at it. The kids are pretty good. I cannot keep it all straight in my head and keep getting mixed up with my hs French. I will persevere!
  10. You'll be close to Lubbock! That's about all the good I know about Clovis. I'm sorry - we just moved to El Paso and I'm not loving it. Dh can put in for a new station at 18 months - we've been here 1 month and I'm already counting down. Be prepared for dirt and wind - lots of dirt and wind. Actually - you'll be pretty close to Taos and Santa Fe. Those are both absolutely beautiful.
  11. I would really look at Richardson. There are very affordable areas, nice public parks/libraries, good schools (if you need them) and not bad to reach Lovefield at all. We lived at Coit and Spring Valley and I loved it. Really loved it. There is a very small town feel to the area, but you're right in the middle of everything - there are 2 malls within 10 minutes, lots of great grocery stores, downtown Dallas is very easy to get to for museums/Arboretum etc. Public transportation is available. We lived all over the Dallas area - Carrollton, McKinney, N. Dallas and Richardson - Richardson was by far the very best.
  12. We sing "Get over it" when the kids are whining. My dad actually has it as his ringtone. They HATE it. When the kids say "Guess what!" Dh will start shouting random words - drives the kids crazy.
  13. Our best dog ever was in a kennel with a bunch of other puppies (at the pound). He was sitting in the corner watching all the other dogs jump around like maniacs. He grew up into the calmest dog ever. There was no question when we chose him - calm is fantastic.
  14. I entirely understand your skepticism. I was that person. I couldn't fathom spending hundreds of dollars to go to an amusement park. However, we went last year and it is amazing. I say that even though we were with MIL and FIL which was very stressful for me - I'd take my kids back in a heartbeat. I still love beach vacations, mountain trips (no camping) but there really was something magical about Disney.
  15. Yup! Call and apologize and return the toy Monday. He's little and needs to learn - be patient and kind.
  16. Yep- "Get your feet out of your mouth and do your math!" To ds who is SIX!!!!!
  17. My dd had hives all over from strep. Scared the skin off of me - we went straight to the er. She started antibiotics immediately but the hives stuck around for several days.
  18. Another vote for Reefs. Retail $20 - $30 and they last forever. I choose them for comfort over any other flipflop.
  19. I heard this talk without knowing who it was. I loved it. However, I hated the book. I don't know what hit me so wrong about it, but I spent the whole timw I read it angry. Still gets my hackles up just thinking about it! Lol
  20. Haven't people fought for freedom of choice for a long time in this country?
  21. Cuba isn't part of the N. American continent? I understand it isn't part of the land mass, but I thought islands were associated with the land mass? Are all islands just hanging out there with no continent? I'm confused....
  22. My cousin-in-law was furious when we named our 3rd dd after MY grandmother. Cousin didn't care, but cil sure threw a fit. Note: they did not have children and weren't planning on starting for several more years. We've seen this cousin maybe 3 times total in 10 years - it isnt like our kids are growing up next to each other This part of the family is just ucky. When I found out #4 was a boy (after 3 girls) their response was "well we did that first" Seriously, because you couldn't just be happy for us?!?!? There's a reason we don't see them hardly ever. Use the name if it works for your baby. My dd couldn't have been anything but the name she has.
  23. Or sand it well. Water based paint will bead up over oil based paint. But if you sand well it isn't a problem.
  24. When we lived in KS we went to eat at Cracker Barrel. Every single party in the restaurant had at least one person in camo. It was deer season and if they weren't military they were apparently hunters. I'm sure there was a full arsenal in the vehicles in the parking lot. It was pretty funny to me after living in N. Dallas and seldom seeing anyone in camo (except dh of course).
