  1. If you make/knit them with 20%-50% rabbit angora fiber with the sheep wool her hands will be extremely warm. Rabbit angora is 8 times warmer than sheep wool. Maybe hire a fiber artist to make them for you.
  2. Among the various Orthodox Jewish streams, the purpose for a woman covering her hair is two-fold. One purpose is general modesty, and the other is to not allow any other man to see her hair other than her husband. This may confuse some as many married Orthodox Jewish women will not be wearing a hat or scarf, they wear wigs, beautiful wigs and so it appears they aren't covering, but they are. This is only for the married woman, not the single woman. Also, it may vary with "How" Orthodox they are, and what kind of Orthodox community they live in. HTH
  3. I used the wooden letter shapes from Handwriting Without Tears. He would sit with me on the couch, a pillow over our laps with the Phonics Pathways open on the pillow. He would only read one or two pages at a time. If excessively squirly, I would get out the shapes and a polishing rag. He would polish the wooden shapes while reading. That was enough to give him some tactile and kinesthetic stimulation. Also, keeping the lessons very short helped tremendously. Sometimes, he would ask for more pages at a time, up to six. I would have to say "No that is enough." HTH:001_smile:
  4. G-d willing, you will have a complete healing. :grouphug::grouphug::grouphug:
  5. I am so sorry you went through that. I agree that emotional processing of your experience is very important. I see you doing a beginning of that by sharing your story with the board here. You may also want to write a journal, draw, sculpt, or some other art medium. I also see you pick bible names for your children, and you probably already know the translation of Levi's name but incase you don't... it means My Heart. A very appropriate name for this child who got your heart going in his entrance to the world. I am glad you and babe are doing well now.:grouphug:
  6. Someone gave us a loft bed with desk and drawers below the bed last year. It is still not put together because I am concerned for safety, and I am not ready to give up sitting on the side of his bed while he is in it to have a calming talk. Also, need another adult to help put it together.:001_huh:
  7. You could go to a dog show/obedience trial, lure coursing trial for the sighthound group, a tracking trial for the scent hound group, an agility trial for the super energized breeds. Possibly find a copy of the televised AKC Nation Dog Show that is an annual event in New York City, I think. I am into Angora rabbits. Rabbits have an entire book on color genetics. It is possible there is something similar with dogs.
  8. Karin, He is generally excellent at most math concepts but has trouble memorizing math facts and remembering certain rules. He broke down with SM on some of the hard percent word problems in 6A. He used to love math and have a lot of confidence with it, but no more. I have two ideas: 1. He is an auditory learner and has lost confidence, sooo, I thought about the AudioMemory.com tapes/CDs for the basic four operations of arithmatic to listen to in the car, while dancing, etc. 2. Then I thought, if you still have a tape recorder, or can record his own voice on a CD or some other fancy technology I haven't yet been dragged into, kicking and screaming, he can even read the content onto the recording. Hearing himself, repeatedly, will inspire confidence in his knowing the material. HTH
  9. The positives are: 1. It is beautifully printed and layed out 2. Concepts are related in a clear way for the average reader of that level 3. It is short if you need a concentrated unit for one of the subjects The negatives are: 1. It is expensive 2. The pages are extremely shinny, as my ds gets a headache reading shinny pages 3. You still have to collect the items used in experiments 4. It is short, and you must find other resources to use in order to expand your lessons to fill in the year. I was thinking of using both Astronomy and Geology Level 1 for 6th, but that is only 20 weeks! I would still have to find 16 weeks worth of material. HTH
  10. :grouphug::grouphug::grouphug: So sorry for your impending loss. I love kids and am sensitive to their feelings and understanding of life. However, since my father died when I was 8, and my mgm and pgf both died when I was 14, I have a different perspective than most. I do think it is important for children to experience their feelings about grandfather dying. It shouldn't be hidden. Having said that, I am not a Southern Baptist and don't know the particular intensity of that service. It is our nature as mothers to want to protect our children from pain, but that isn't always possible or even the best thing. Sometimes pain does make us stronger. I became the matriarch of my family line at 37 when my mother died - incredibly painful, but I came through it eventually. You will make it!
  11. Is your dc an auditory/verbal learner? If so, AudioMemory.com is a great resource for Addition Songs CD, Subtraction Songs CD, etc. I played these in the car and ds sang them through and loved them. For a tactile/kinesthetic learner it is great to use the Learning Wrap-ups; they have a set for each operation, and fractions, as well as other subjects. I bought most of our wrap-ups sets used on this site or a used book store with a large children's section, in my town. HTH:001_smile:
  12. Yes, I would say acupuncture helps. It helped me, but was more long lasting when it was immediately followed with a chiropractic treatment. If you can afford it, I would combine the two modalities. Maybe even with massage as well.
  13. Ultrasounds for finding out the gender is not very reliable. Even at the end of pregnancy they are only about 80% reliable. I even know of some women who ended up having twins who had several ultrasounds where the twins were thought to be only one!
  14. I loved the Handwriting Without Tears curriculum. DS could do it on his own. Small amounts frequently. Looks weird as it is straight up vertical, but it was easier for him to see and accomplish. There are two levels at about 3rd and 4th grade level approximately. Then there is another level for 5th or higher.
  15. We have always used Singapore. This year I added in one chapter of the LoF Fractions as a reward at the end of each text/workbook/Intensive Practice/Challenging Word Problems sequence of a topic. He loves the fred!
  16. R.E.A.L. Science Odyssey has Life, Earth and Space, and Chemistry all in level 1. I don't know if they ship to the UK. The website is www.pandia.com or www.pandiapress.com I hope they are working on physics and more levels, but don't know for sure. Good luck!
  17. Xyzal is the med for me. It is a derivative of Claritin, but much stronger. It is expensive and, both I and my allergist had to file an appeal for the HMO to pay, but it is worth it. Also, I use generic Flonase steroid nasal spray. I have never headr of an elevation that prevents allergies. I think it is more related to your sensitivity to the pollens produced in the area. The west has alot of juniper/cedar plants and that is the second most allergenic pollen in the world.:001_huh:
  18. My water broke without contractions in the rabbit barn at 10:15 AM on a saturday and I gave birth to ds at 10:04 AM on a sunday. This was a midwife attended homebirth where I spent some time in the birth tub, but gave birth in the bedroom. 7#. Active labor was about 4 hours.;)
  19. What about TheGreatCourses.com. They have Basic Math for 30 lessons, Algebra 1 for 36 lessons, Algebra 2 for 36 lessons, and I can't remember the number of lessons for Geograhy. They have a Calculus course as well. I don't know about Trigonometry. Most of their courses are 30 minutes long and math courses have a workbook.
  20. He is 10 1/2 now, but for Kinder we did: Phonics: Phonics Pathways and then its' sequel Pyramid from Dorbooks.com, this was daily; Explode the Code books A, B, & C about three times a week. Reading: Hundreds and hundreds of read alouds of all topics, stories, non-fiction, etc. Handwriting: Handwriting Without Tears Kinder level including wooden pieces, clay rope work, small chalk board, and audio CD about three times a week. Math: Earlybird Math US Edition from SingaporeMath.com about twice a week. Science: Child Play Science (or something like that title) from SingaporeMath.com once a week. We did a few homemade experiements, he helped care for our many angora rabbits, gardened in the spring, summer, and fall. Hope this helps.
  21. RhondaJK, The SingaporeMath.com distributors in the United States has several different curricula for math, as well as other subjects. The most popular math program for both homeschoolers and brick and mortar schools is called Primary Mathematics and covers 1st grade through 6th grade. Primary Math has been published and imported in three editions: 3rd Edition, US Edition, and now Standards Edition. 3rd Edition is now only available from other homeschoolers or other used sources like amazon.com, etc. The US Edition is available from Rainbow Resource, other homeschoolers, web book sales sites, and probably other homeschool sites/cataloges. The newer Standards Edition is available from all of the same sources listed for US Edition. The basic program for Primary Math is 2 text books, 2 workbooks per year. Many hsers use the Home Instructor Manuals, one per text book. There are also 2 Extra Practice books, 2 Intensive Practice books, and 1 Challenging Word Problems book per year available. These are more work and optional. Some kids catch on right away with only the texts and workbooks. Other kids need more problems to do right after the text and workbooks like a longer mastery program, or need to see the subject at a different time, like a spiral program. This is up to you. Other popular programs are for Pre-K and Kinder: Earlybird Math formerly available in a US Edition and now in Standards Edition. Additionally, for 7th through 10th grades there is New Elementary Math which covers Pre-Algebra, Algebra I and II, Geometry, and some Trigonometry, and other programs for after 10th grade. You may be able to find Earlybird and NEM from other homeschoolers and used sites as well as RR, and other homeschool businesses, but the advanced curricula I would only look for on the SingaporeMath.com site. I hope this helps clarify and give an overview. We love Singapore Math at our house.
