  1. When I was in graduate school, I couldn't prove that I had gotten all of my shots as a child because the clinic had been wiped out by a hurricane. The school wanted me to get all of the shots again, but when I balked, they let me have a blood titer test done.
  2. My son was born with his toes pointed in so much that it made learning to walk difficult. We also had a Ped doctor give us poor medical advice, but thankfully we moved to a new base and got a new doctor who asked if we wanted to explore other options. He sent us to a specialized physical therapist who discovered that my son's hips were turned inward and that it wasn't a foot problem at all. With this info, even the surgeon agreed to us working exclusively with the Manual PT (pretty rare to find 10 years ago). My son visited the M-PT twice a week for 18 months (from age 3-4.5 years old) and his feet are almost perfectly straight now without surgeries or metal bars.
  3. When I walk into a house I was to see, feel, hear ... a clean, staged house void of any clutter and ZERO nasty pet smells or evidence of smokers. I don't want to see a glass aquarium with your MONSTER pet SPIDER! What I like when I walk into a house ... all the work already done since I don't want to have to consider all the work I will have to do (painting, gutting anything with small tiles in the kitchen, nasty bathrooms, etc.) I can't stand to see wild colors on walls in a house. I know paint is cheap, but I don't want to have to paint, replace carpet/floors, etc unless there is a decorating budget involved. Warm colors on the walls, zero clutter, gives a house a homey feel and I can see myself living there.
  4. When I sit at swim practice 5 days a week, I try hard to avoid a few swim moms for that same reason. I have been a swim mom for a long time (also a coach and still a deck official), but I don't know my children's stats and this drives 3 of the swim moms crazy. They know my son's times! They quote my son's times and tell me all the time that I should keep up with his times. I think there should be a designated sport for competitive swim moms - like a trivia game - these ladies would be champions. I just have a more relaxed opinion toward competitive swimming.
  5. I am slowing starting to gather my thoughts on what I want my son to study next year. I have a good idea about the core subjects he will take, but I started to think about those, "What your Xth Grader Needs to Know" books. Since I am in the early stages and can easily change directions, I thought I would ask the Hive (since my library doesn't have that book for 8th graders). What are things that my soon-to-be 8th Grader needs to know? It could be a "class" or just life skills. For example: - increase his typing proficiency - be able to plan a full meal - - Thanks
  6. We are Relaxed Homeschoolers in that my children prefer doing school on the sofa. We don't have lap desks, but I have seen my children use their laptops as a desk. :D
  7. A few years ago when we lived on the east coast, our area was hit by a heat wave (high humidity too) and of course, our A/C died. While we waited for the repairmen, we rented a tower fan for the day/night. I only lasted one night before I got a hotel room because we were so miserable.
  8. When my daughter was 4-months-old, I wrote her a love letter with my hopes and dreams for her future and my pledge to try my best. I shared it with her last weekend and we both cried. DUH to me! I should have saved it for her birthday.
  9. Charms are a great idea since she already has a bracelet. I LOVE the hot air balloon ride idea, but the price of $150 each is too much at the moment since there are 4 of us.
  10. My daughter turns 16 next weekend. I have a few little gifts for her, but I really want to give her a special gift ... something really Sweet 16'ish. Of course, I don't have any ideas. HELP :D Thank you so much for the ideas! I wrote a love letter to my daughter AND we surprised her with a hot air balloon ride. It was too expensive for all 4 of us to go, so we decided to send my husband with her because of my chronic vertigo. My son and I chased the balloon the entire time and we had a blast too! We have been home for two hours now and my daughter is still glowing with happiness.
  11. http://www.abqtopten.com/blog/plaza-cafe-downtown/ - this is an icon place to eat in Santa Fe, but it is a little pricey.
  12. I add tomato sauce, more beef broth, rosemary, garlic and simmer for 15 minutes. They I shred the beef, chop the carrots, add veggies from the freezer (peas, carrots if I didn't have many left, corn, etc.) and simmer for 15 more minutes. Perfection! I tend to cook a larger roast than we can eat just so we can make this soup.
  13. We just finished our 180th day and my children danced while they picked up all of their school books. I didn't dance, but I was mentally singing and dancing with joy. Anyone else finish school today?
  14. We now live in an area that amazingly doesn't have mosquitoes, but when we did, we looked for standing water and treat those spots - something like this ... At our last base, we were lucky that the city sprayed weekly and they treated our standing water every 60 days.
  15. Is it obvious before you have the book printed that you need to increase the photo size? I have a Blogger blog (if that makes a difference).
  16. The headline made my groan because a "kid" back then would have only referred to a goat.
  17. My girlfriend's husband does IT work (computers, but not sure what he does) and since she homeschools their children, they all travel with him internationally. They live 4-6 months in one country, move to the next, rotate to the US, then back. Regardless of where they are living at the moment, he is connected with his company via the internet. Sweet life and sweet money!
  18. I used "Windows to the World" last year and "Elegant Essays" this year and I was very frustrated with both. I had to spend so much time trying to figure out what I was supposed to do since the instructor's manual didn't line up with the student manual. My daughter and I loved "Windows" despite those flaws, but EE drove me crazy since it was so poorly organized.
