I thought my Dad's facebook account was hacked/cloned
vonfirmath replied to ktgrok's topic in The Chat Board
Not so much. There are several cases in older families where a child dies and a later child is given the same name -
That's a twist I didn't even think about! (submitting DNA and putting a different name on it than the person who took it) Which means even information you think you know may not be true

No. Certainly not until after Uncle Harold was dead and probably not until and unless questions were being asked. IE the other child was found/found Dick and Jane and there was questions where they might come from. Then, esp if Uncle Harold was dead, I might pipe up with what I knew.

My 2nd was due on my first child's due date. First child was 2 days early and she was 5 days late. So they are a week apart.

Can we ponder cultural identity in the US again?

Laugh -- My sister has three kids and two of them have been mistaken for Hispanic. No idea where that came from. -
Can we ponder cultural identity in the US again?
vonfirmath replied to Carrie12345's topic in The Chat Board
Honestly I've only ever heard WASP used in a negative manner so I don't think I have any interest in claiming it as a cultural identity. -
Yep. There was a guy on Facebook trying to convince me the "Optimal audio book" was 3 hours long and I was like "That's highway robbery" -- if I am paying $11-14 on a book, I really want length!

One of the reasons I love Audible is that once you have purchased a book with credits, you get to keep it. I am still listening to books I bought with Audible back in 2001-ish. I listen on my iphone. My kids listen on their ipad. We do not have alexa There are a lot of books period. Some of my favorites are non-fiction but I do have more fiction than non-fiction in my personal library

So my 17 year old is talking to an Army recruiter...
vonfirmath replied to Zoo Keeper's topic in The Chat Board
This is what my niece (who is in the military) said. The recruiters are trying to make their quotas. They won't necessarily tell you what is best for you but, rather, whatever fills a number they need filled. It is best to go knowing what you want and hold out until you get it -- even being willing to walk and do something else. Because of COVID and training delays, etc. Her BASIC ended up taking almost 6 months. Then she was injured and could not go directly to intermediate but had to rest and see if it would heal enough to continue. It did nad she finished Intermediate over a year after she first swore in. -
Mom...love/"love"...a message received... :(
vonfirmath replied to BakersDozen's topic in The Chat Board
So if you want to ignore the text, you need to know what you are going to do if she shows up on your doorstep. If you can do it without breaking down, i recommend a "You are not welcome here" and closing the door. Perhaps offering the picture of the list you found. -- Perhaps not thought because that might just give her ammunition to "argue" about how you didn't understand what you saw. -
Mom...love/"love"...a message received... :(
vonfirmath replied to BakersDozen's topic in The Chat Board
Is this a text? if so, I think I'd try my best to ignore it. not respond. As far as she's concerned, I never saw it at all. She does not deserve to know you care enough to get upset about it. -
Not gonna lie - this sparks a little joy 😁

How long would it take you to get your house ready to sell?
vonfirmath replied to teachermom2834's topic in The Chat Board
The last time we moved states it took a good 6 months to pack. I can't imagine it would be any faster now. -

My son got partially caught in a fake job scam
vonfirmath replied to Ginevra's topic in The Chat Board
When my husband was looking for work, he did a phone interview (I think -- it may have been something face to face over the computer) for a company -- and they hired him later that day. But it was work from home and he needed specific equipment. They sent him what was needed so he could start looking for it. He would be reimbursed after 30 days on the job, I believe were the terms. The thing that sent up red flags was when we went looking for the equipment and could not find it ANYWHERE. Not to mention, the specs were pretty old based on current technology. At first he was going to ask for advice from the company (He had a phone number for his contact and an email) as to where to get the required equipment. But the old technology made us both suspicious and I suggested he Internet search the company and when he did -- there was a big old warning on their page that they were NOT hiring for (position my husband had just been "hired" for) -- after which we realized it was just a scam and he sank into despondency for a while. (He'd been looking and gotten excited to FINALLY find someone interested in him. It was demoralizing to realize it was just a scammer)- 20 replies
