  1. My Mom asked when DD gets a day off. When we were sitting at her house for Labor day. After DD had stayed with them for the last 3 days.:glare: My older sister has her kids reading and doing math all summer (ps kids). Some how them working all summer isn't the same? We school year round and take breaks when needed. One of the reasons we school year round is so we can have shorter days. Although she keeps asking to do more so the shorter days aren't working like I had planned.
  2. Sure My DH is a SAHD that handles most of the kids education (I do a little). He also runs an online business selling plastic models of tanks and planes. I work as a Sr. System Engineer for a major health organization based out of the Midwest. I primarily work with Windows and VMware servers.
  3. There are a number of things that can cause this. It can be as simple as they don't have enough DHCP addresses for everyone systems or the services are stopped.
  4. I understand what it's like when what you need is out of reach when you need it. I can't comment on the upper levels so, here is what I would do for 1st - 2nd. Math: MEP or Math Mammoth is inexpensive Reading: Check your library. Mine has a copy of Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading. http://www.progressivephonics.com http://www.marriottmd.com/sam/index.html#book1 and http://www.starfall.com are free. Grammar: First Language Lessons Rainbow Resources $13.25 Science, Spelling and History can wait until you have Math, reading and grammar started. Science: Check your library. If that doesn't work, you don't need all of the books at once. It's not uncommon for homeschoolers to start 1-2 topics at a time and work up to a full load. It can ease the transition into the school year.
  5. I have a 6 year old with a June Birthday. She wasn't emotionally or socially ready for K last year. We started with a games last fall and then started a gentle into to K work this spring. Since we started about April she has flown through K and is starting 1st grade work in handwriting, math, and history. Reading she is almost to an end of K level for our area. We haven't started Science yet. I started calling her 1st. If we were going to send her to PS she would be going to K. PS's in our area doesn't start history until 5th grade. They do some social studies and call it history but, nothing I would call history. Their Science from K-3 is roughly equivalent the Elemental Science's intro to Science (K). They use Everyday math with out every having the students learn their facts... DD may be end of K beginning of 1st but, my guess is she will be about a grade ahead of her peers by the time we reach middle school.
  6. This has been my experience as well. Try going to a tech conference sometime. 90%-98% male I could have a 20 stall bathroom to myself at a conference of 14,000
  7. What type of supplies are needed for the experiments in Biology? It would be nice if there was a supplies list on the website.
  8. Some of king Tut's belonging's are visiting Denver: http://www.tutdenver.com
  9. If she is moving in with you, please make sure you extend the restraining order to your house, work, kids, etc.
  10. That depends a lot on the culture of the work place. My boss and my boss's boss would both be a little confused if I addressed letters to Mr. ____. It can also be a office culture issue if you are going over your boss's head.
  11. I'm only for this solution is everyone is required to obtain a civil union for the legal rights and then seek out a church for a marriage if they desire. I think only having civil unions for gay marriages would create a "second class" marriage.
  12. :iagree: It's both. Which IMO is part of why it's so hard for people to accept. I would love to see them separated. If you want to be married religiously go to your church. If you want the legal benefits go see the courthouse. (or do both) I wouldn't mind if everyone was required to form a civil union for the legal marriage. I have yet to understand how someone else getting married affects my marriage in any way. I'm a support of marriage being available for all consenting adults.
  13. IMO all the talk of personal taxes is a red herring. If you want to fix the tax system start with the corporate side. Eliminate the existing taxes and loop holes for corporations. Make companies pay a tax on ALL revenue earned in the USA. I think we can all agree that better accountability would be a good first step.
  14. I grew up ELCA Lutheran. Went to church every Sunday. Spent a week at bible camp every summer. Stopped attending church the second I moved out of my parents house. I've attended a couple of Christan churches over the last 15 years. I'm an atheist and now attend a UU church. I like the community. I do miss some of the ritual but, can't in good contentious attend a Christan service or bring my DD and DS. I will still attend my Mom's church when I'm home but that has to do with honoring my mother.
  15. Is the problem understanding how and what multiplication is, knowing the facts, or applying them to word problems? If she doesn't understand multiplication you need to go backwards and insure a conceptual understanding. You've already gotten lots of advice for learning the facts. Learning to apply math to real world applications requires a very strong understanding of what multiplication is not just an understanding of how to plug #'s into a formula. I would take a look at the challenging word problems by singapore if this is the problem.
  16. :bigear: DD doesn't have to take a test til the 2011 school year.
