what years are the MOST important to homeschool?
Leav97 replied to MeganW's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
K-2 and Middle school K-2 because I don't believe in early academics. Middle School because kids that age need at least as much adult assistance with social situations as pre-k's do. -

Maintaining during the holidays is great. Weight loss during this time is awesome. Keep working on it. You're doing great. -
Big thanks to whoever recommended "Math Coach" by Wickelgren

There must be someone else on these boards that uses the same library as me. Every time a book is mentioned I find it already checked out. -

It's not either/or. It should be both. Especially in a non-committed, everyone has been tested for STDs relationship. -
Who combines History Odyssey and SOTW? Anyone?
Leav97 replied to golfcartmama's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
We use HO Ancients. It uses SOTW 1 almost every week. You might also want a copy of The Usborne Internet-Linked Encyclopedia of World History. It also uses A Child's History of the World but, you could skip that purchase. I've never used the AG for STOW. -

But the problem is the decisions you make impact everyone around you. One of the reasons health care costs in this country are increasing is the overall health of the population is decreasing. When the costs of your health care is passed on to those around you (which already happens even without health care reform) and the national deficit is climbing the government should want a healthier population. The health of the population is getting bad enough that the military is starting to worry that there won't be enough people available to serve. -

I would argue that based on the current health of our population that yes, we do need LAWS to micro-manage peoples choices. -
If you don't want to wait until after Christmas... Buy a bag of Kidney beans and a bag of craft sticks. Glue 10 kidney beans to each craft stick. Make 10 craft sticks. Have your child help! Have your child count out 10 kidney beans. Then trade them for a craft stick. Repeat until they reach 100. Work on counting by 10's. Once they understand that 10 individual kidney beans are the same as 1 craft stick with 10 kidney beans move on to creating 2 digit #'s. Then work on adding 10. For example, make 38. 3 craft sticks and 8 loose beans. Hand them another craft stick, how many does that make now? If they understand these 3 things MM1B ch 4 seems to go well. YMMV

Math...again...and again...someone just tell me what to do.
Leav97 replied to 5LittleMonkeys's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Word problems require a set of skills from math, logic and strategy. You might want to look at Challenging word problems by Singapore. I would start with level 1. The math portion would be easy (single digit addition and subtraction) which would allow you to focus on the logic and strategy. If your younger child is using MEP and she has problems with the grade level, I wouldn't use MEP. She might see it as a conformation that she isn't good at math. I would look towards a program that doesn't have a grade level or where the grade level can be hidden. Like Miquon, MM, or maybe even Saxon. I think going backwards and covering the same material with a different program would be a very good idea. If you can get a sample of various programs, she maybe able to help you find a program that uses explanations that make sense to her. Sometimes having things explained in a different way can make all of the difference. Sometime going back to an "old" concept and covering it again after working on other things can help. Understanding the material is the best way to build confidence. -
I score a 35. According to the test information the average score for women is 15. I think be introverted and having social anxiety issues skews the results for me. But, I'm probably in the high functioning side of the spectrum. for various reasons I have no interest in an actual label.

Math Mammoth users -- how about standardized tests?
Leav97 replied to truebluexf's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
My DD took the PIAT-R yesterday. She just finished 1A. She scored a 2.0 grade level compared to national norms. -
DD took the PIAT-R yesterday. If she were in PS she would be in K. She tested 1.3 - 1.6 grade in reading, general knowledge, and spelling. She tested as 2.0 grade in math. Not really something I didn't know but, at the same time, I'm relieved that I'm not completely screwing up my child.

Wow, I think you just became my hero. I'm 5'7' and started a diet last week at 227. My current goal is 190. I'm starting this week with only eliminating pop and sweets. Then I'll move on to healthy eating. -
Looking through his reading list, it's all out of print books. Why would someone need to buy a CD of OOP books? Buy a kindle or a nook download them for free and as a bonus you won't need to print them. Am I missing something?

acupuncture (for insomnia or anything else)
Leav97 replied to Denisemomof4's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I did for fertility. After TTC for ~2 years, I read a study on combining acupuncture with infertility treatment. I decided to try just the acupuncture on it's own. It worked. It does sting a little as the needles go in but they don't hurt after they are in. It was very relaxing. -
Has anybody else ever had to cancel school...
Leav97 replied to WarriorMama's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I had to do spelling at 9 pm one night because the box with AAS arrived and DD didn't want to wait until the next day. She even helped me get it all ready to go. -
Just to play devils advocate. What happens if the fire dept does put out the fire and lets them pay the fee tomorrow. What incentive to people have to pay the fee. There would be no need to support the fire dept. Wait until you have a fire and then pay a $75 fee. They wouldn't have a fire dept if everyone did this. The way they have it set up right now it is a no win scenario for the fire dept .

A Must See.....Waiting for Superman
Leav97 replied to PenKase's topic in Parents' Forum Afterschooling Board
A good education should not require winning a lottery. I'm interested in seeing what reform they are recommending. I think every child needs an education at their skill level.
