  1. Has anyone here used Elemental Science? What has your experience been? http://elementalscience.com/
  2. Has anyone seen these online classes before on ES site? I haven't been on there in awhile and I am a bit surprised! http://www.elementalscience.com/biology-live-online-course/ They have the Biology online classes that uses the Miller & Levine book and the Physical Science online class uses the Physical Science text: Concepts In Action 2011 Any thoughts? I may email her for more info but thought I would try here first. I will cross post to high school board. Edit to add: I'm curious to know how the physical science course would work for an 8th grader instead of using their Classics Series. http://www.elementalscience.com/physical-science-live-online-course/

  4. I am considering Elemental Science (Biology) for use with my 5th grader. I was wondering, do I absolutely need to purchase the encyclopedias listed for the text? Or, can I use the science encyclopedias I have on hand and assign reading from those, based upon the topics covered in the student guide? I appreciate the more structured/pulled-together approach layed out by Elemental Science, rather than the way 5th grade Biology is presented in WTM. However, I am working on a tight budget. I have the Usborne Internet-linked Science Encyclopedia that we barely used from 3rd grade and I'm wondering if I can put it to use now. Input is greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!
  5. Is anybody else planning their 3rd grade chemistry? So far I'm enchanted by Ellen McHenry's Elements (12 weeks, 8yo and up) perhaps to follow with her Brain (9 weeks, 8yo and up) and, if Button is up to it, Carbon Chemistry (no time listed, for 9yo and up). I figure that be a year's worth of work. I'm tempted to use REAL Science Chemistry as a spine, but perhaps that would be a pointless addition. I thought I'd supplement with Basher's Periodic Table and Basher's Chemistry Cartoon Guide to Chemistry (for older children -- will have to see how this goes) Maybe biographies for Marie Curie George Washington Carver Antoni Van Leeuwenhoek Louis Pasteur Lord Kelvin (? -- the distinction btw. physics and chemists blurs/doesn't apply this early, not sure when we'll do Kelvin) Antoine Lavoisier Josiah Wedgwood -- not an academic chemist, but functionally a master materials scientist; would love to find a good bio for him Montessori-style cards were made by this blogger (links to her instructions) using this Elements site -- basic subatomic structure of each element. I haven't figured out whether or not I want to to this myself. we ourselves don't work very well from DK-style books, so none are listed ... but what are y'all doing? or, if you've come through Grammar chemistry already, what have you liked? ETA resources suggested by others, down-thread: Elemental Science curriculum GEMS Chemical Reactions unit Mr. Q's Chemistry Noeo Chemistry II Royal Fireworks' Press Dr. Dave's Teaching Manuals: Chemistry (text + CD with visuals; you can download a sample) Guest Hollow's chemistry (this is a free scheduling of resources for a year of chemistry: do visit for the resource list at least, incl. DVDs) Homeschool Share's free chemistry unit (lapbooking/notebooking) ACS middle school chemistry-- this is free, but FWIW boardies much prefer McHenry's Elements. It is suggested to try ACS, then Elements since ACS is simpler; the ACS includes videos of dramatic demonstrations you prob. won't be doing at home :) ACS's Wonderscience activity book (on Amazon, used, much more cheaply) -- boardies love this resource. "Chemically Active: Experiments You Can Do At Home" book by Cobb "Exploring the World of Chemistry: From Ancient Metals to High-Speed Supercomputers" by Tiner Memoria Press' guide to the Tiner book above (they sell the text, too) -- scroll down a bit. "The Disappearing Spoon": this is not a book written for children; good resource for the parent or for a child old enough to enjoy. A living book. Theodore Gray's "The Elements" " "Elements Vault": Treasures of the Periodic Table w/ Removable Documents and Real Element Samples Incl. Gold " Photographic Card Deck of the Elements " The Elements Puzzle (1000 pieces) periodictable.com (from Gray & co, just like the Elements book but with other stuff too) periodicvideos.com from the University of Nottingham: videos for all elements, links to the authors' writing in the peer-reviewed journals Science and Nature Chemistry, &c.
  6. Anyone use this? I was going to piece my own together and from what I've seen this looks like exactly what I was trying to do :)
  7. Do you love it? I am very intersted in using this for my upcoming K'er. It looks like there is lots of hands on. She loves anything hands on. I am thinking about using it slowly for K and 1st. Is anyone doing this? I would love to hear your thoughts on this, good or bad. Thanks!
  8. Has anyone put together a list of living books to supplement Elemental science ....earth and astronomy grammar level? Thanks!
  9. We started Elemental science. I have to say the first couple weeks are dry..lol. But laying foundation for on-going projects, which is fine. Now, the charts, for example, the habitat charts. I'm dealing with a young child grade 2. Her reading and writing is coming. I have been reading to her, filling out the charts, there isn't room for her big manuscript. Plus she doesn't yet have the capability to research to find the answers on her own in the texts. So I have been reading passages that include the answers, but not give her the answer so she still has to pick out the answer. I just feel like I am the one doing the work.... When we aren't using Jan cleave book, she is reading some of the pages on her own. Am I doing this wrong? Or is this how it is? LOL
  10. I love this science curriculum and I hope it makes it into the next WTM edition! :w00t: Actually, I think it is such a perfect fit with the WTM that PHP should publish and sell it. ;) :D
  11. I have a first grader and we're in our third week of school. We've been easing in slowly, but will be all in the week of the 14th. I was planning on following TWTM's science section, but someone mentioned elemental science biology, basically for ease of planning. It is inexpensive enough and looks like it pulls all the important stuff together. Does anyone have experience with this science program? Like it? Love it? Leave it? Why? Thanks for your input!
  12. I just looked at this and liked the looks of it--specifically thinking of using the Biology one this fall. Any thoughts on this curriculum from those of you who have used it? Likes? Dislikes?
  13. I am so impressed! DD will be learning real chemistry! I am so glad that I have Elemental Science to go along with RS4K. I was pleasantly surprised that I only had to purchase 3 books, one of which is an encyclopedia that I will be glad to have anyway. I was wondering if anyone has suggestions (Paige?) on how to combine the two. We want to get started right away. I also need to buy some rock salt for the ice cream experiment. What is that?
  14. I'd like to use Fizz, Bubble, and Flash! as well as The Elements by Ellen McHenry to enhance our chemistry studies this year. The Fizz... book is listed in NOEO's Chemistry II booklist (Logic stage) and The Elements, I believe was for ages 9+ Would either of these work for an advanced 8yo, or should I wait until our nex go-round with Chemistry? I don't want to use up all the great resources now and not have as much selection when we get back to Chemistry in grade 7. :D
  15. What are some science curriculums that are appropriate for First grade? I own all the Apologia Elementary series, but won't be starting those until 3rd grade. I have considered Sonlight Science K or 1, but I see mixed reviews about SL science, mostly negative.
  16. Is anyone using/ has anyone used Earth Science or Chemistry yet?
