  1. Ds, a junior, is currently in Derek Owens' AP Calc AB class after finishing PreCalc with him. Derek suggested that ds could move directly to AP Calc BC but ds felt very strongly about continuing on with DO. I assumed that I could have ds take AP Calc BC with another provider knowing that some material would be a repeat. Getting a solid foundation in Calc wouldn't hurt ds' goal of Mech Engr. An acquaintance recently suggested ds look into DE at our local Univ for Calc. I'm not sure if they will have him start the Calc sequence again even though a score of 4/5 on the AP Calc AB would normally get him credit if he chose to attend there. Would it make sense to go ahead and repeat Calc 1 since it would a new environment, college setting, live class etc? The text that the Prof uses is Calculus by Stewart - 7th edn. ISBN 978-0-538-49781-7. However the reviews at Amazon are mixed. How is it different from this Stewart text - Calculus: Early Transcendentals 7th Edn. The University that is on ds' list uses this text for their beginning Calc courses. My head is starting to hurt as I research possibilities for ds' senior year. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. TIA.
  2. Yes, ds took the SAT in 8th grade through NUMATS. At the time I didn't know you could call CB. We just waited for the results to arrive in the mail. I can't remember if they were posted on our NUMATS account earlier.
  3. Sorry about the postponement. Ugh! Hope she gets her scores soon. No books to burn here. We borrowed an older prep book from the library to take a sample test and also used the booklet that CB publishes each year - we wanted to avoid purchasing anything. Used that money to go out to eat after testing. :-)
  4. Ds did an Integrated Physics/Chemistry course in 8th grade. He liked what he saw of Exploration Education at a HS convention. I purchased the Intermediate Level Physical Science (Advanced Version) which ds worked through. But I also had him read the CPO Physical Science text - I matched the chapters in the text to the topics in Explor Educ the best I could. I don't remember details - menopause and health issues taking a toll. :-)
  5. Ds, a Junior did very well. Yay!! No more SATs for him unless he takes another subject test. Now he has to decide if he wants to give up 4 hours on a Sat morning for the ACT.
  6. When ds took it as a sophomore last year his score report was mailed out Dec 5. I'm not sure if they are available sooner online, if you have a CB account.
  7. Thanks freesia - your post was helpful. Good to know that the second test was better.
  8. Ds took Math 2 after completing PreCalc. His goal is to pursue Engr.
  9. So very sorry to hear about the challenges you and dc are facing. Hugs and prayers.
  10. Not Catholic, but still using Kolbe for self-studying HS Biology - substituting resources when needed. This is our first time using Kolbe.
  11. I purchased the course plans from Kolbe for HS Biology using Prentice Hall (Dragonfly edition). Ds took the first exam a couple of weeks ago and I've been struggling with grading his short essay questions. Do your dc have the same level of detail as the answer key? Any advice, help in grading these tests. I didn't go with the option of having Kolbe grade because we plan to substitute a few resources. Thanks in advance.
  12. Yes, as Muttichen posted the curve is brutal for the SAT subjects tests. I can't get the link to work but you can Google "SAT subject test percentile ranks" and you can see the pdf that shows the PR for the different subjects. HTH
  13. So very sorry for your dd - hope she recovers quickly from this experience and you can find some other options to pursue.
  14. Another thing to keep in mind is that many students take the SAT subject tests after having completed AP courses and the curve can be pretty brutal. I think this is especially true for the Science subject tests.
  15. I highly recommend Derek Owens. The course can be started at any time so your ds could jump right in. You pay $58 monthly for the distance learning option. Ds has taken Physics and PreCalc with him and he insisted on taking AP Calc with Derek. www.derekowens.com
  16. I'm still using the one I posted pictures of in the original thread. I love that I can use it as a brain dump - no more trying to keep track of stuff or writing on pieces of papers, misc envelopes etc. I did find a few ruled Moleskines on clearance that I purchased. I think the graph lines in my current journal make it look a little cluttered and make it harder for me to see. This could just be my vision issues causing a problem. My current journal is not a Moleskine. The BJ forces me to tackle things I would rather put off because it is annoying to migrate items for 3 days in a row. I also love checking things off - makes me feel productive. :-) I'm glad I inserted the monthly calendar pages - the one page vertical layout would not have worked for me. I haven't started collection pages yet - I've mostly been using it as a daily calendar. Love the freedom of using as much space as I need for a particular day. Thanks to the OP for linking the Bullet Journal on these forums - I think I finally found something that will work for me.
  17. Ds and I read and discussed Inferno over a month (I think). We also used the TC lectures. Another resource - Ascent to Love: A Guide to Dante's Divine Comedy by Peter J. Leithart.
  18. So very sorry to hear this. Prayers for a speedy recovery. :grouphug: :grouphug:
  19. My condolences to the family. :grouphug:

  21. I see we may be subscribing to similar newsletters. :-) I hope you find the right person who can help you sort out your health issues. I know how frustrating it can be when things don't make sense. Do you have any favorite AIP cookbooks or do you just search the internet for recipes. With my vision issues, I hate staring at a screen so I'm trying to decide if I should preorder Sarah Ballantyne's Paleo Approach cookbook.
  22. I have an older edition (7th) of How To Study in College by Walter Pauk that I purchased some time ago for the cost of shipping from Amazon. I just went to AM and have no idea why the newer edition is so expensive - Cengage is involved...so that may be the reason. :-) Also, Amy Barr from Lukeion has an article in the recent digital edition of Old Schoolhouse Magazine on "4 Crucial College Skills" that you may find helpful. For some reason I can no longer link on these forums.....aargh. Google might help.
  23. If you are interested in hearing more info from alternative practitioners about Thyroid issues, you could register free for these sessions. They started last week and continue until May 17th, I think. Each day's sessions are available for 48 hours. I am not familiar with all of the speakers but have heard a few of them speak before about gluten issues. Link: www.thethyroidsessions.com If you do register and listen to the sessions, let me know what you think. HTH
