  1. With all the frustration about late scores with both the SAT and ACT recently, I thought I should mention one other factor to consider when ordering score reports. Both the SAT and ACT have a statement on their websites about the scores getting to schools based on the school's reporting cycle. Most of the schools that ds was considering were already sent scores when he took the test so I didn't pay much attention to that detail. He added one school to his list mid-October so I went to the ACT site and ordered scores. Well, through email exchanges with this school, it turns out that they get a batch of scores from ACT every *4* weeks on a CD. I called ACT and found out that this school would be sent the CD with my son's scores on Nov 4. Thankfully the deadline for scholarships at this school is Nov 15. I was not aware that there could be delays because of how the schools receive scores. Something to consider.
  2. This was true for ds as well. He is not exactly thrilled about writing more essays especially when he's been sick this week. Hang in there with this whole process. :grouphug:
  3. How did your dc thank those writing recommendation letters for them? Just a card/thank you note or something more?
  4. Agreeing with this. He is so kind, gracious, helpful and personable. Both ds and I miss him this year. :-(
  5. I don't want to send more paperwork than is required or requested. However, I was wondering if sending course descriptions anyway to some competitive schools may make a difference in scholarship awards. Any thoughts? What did you do?
  6. Mine ended up being one and a half pages, too. My word document was normal spacing, 12 pt font.
  7. Ds finished his portion of Common App on Wednesday, I finished the School report section on Thursday and then focused on the Counselor Rec. Hit the submit button for the Application on Sat afternoon. Our family then went out to dinner and a movie to celebrate. Feels like a huge load off my shoulders. THANK YOU again to the posters on this forum! Ds still has to finish up some scholarship essays for a couple more schools, I have to mail out a packet to a local uni and then we are DONE. :hurray:
  8. I'm not sure if this applies to most schools since ds just had one univ which required the CA, but somewhere on the student portion there was a question about being able to pay the fee. It stated something to the effect that the fee should not be a burden so one could get a waiver by filling out some form available from the school counselor. Don't remember the details because ds was skimming through parts that didn't apply. Also, as a homeschooler, I'm not sure what you would need to do.
  9. I wrote one for every single course. Short paragraphs for online classes and longer for the ones we did at home. The Literature/History courses were the most detailed. Mine ended up being 9 pages long.
  10. I submitted the Common App School Report late this afternoon. Yay. that part is done. Now, I have to tackle the Counselor Rec. Will be glad to have that done! THANK YOU to all for helping me get the SR submitted. I would not have been able to do it without your help. For those who've completed the CR - how long was it? Trying to decide how verbose I need to be.
  11. We opted out because we are sick of being bombarded with snail mail, email and incessant phone calling. So very thankful that I convinced dh to get a new phone with caller ID a year ago. Given that it's a new program we weren't sure how helpful it would be.
  12. Used a typed signature for most schools. The local university requires a notarized copy of the transcript so that one will be physically signed and mailed with the rest of the packet. It's due Nov 15 so I haven't done it yet.
  13. Thanks, I was able to get it under 500KB by changing the font.
  14. Yes, that was indeed the problem. I deleted the list of labs and changed the font to Arial after googling earlier to find a font that uses less space. I did not know that about the Calibri font. I was wondering why my two page school profile took up so much space. I have mostly used Calibri for Word documents - it has just the right amount of space between letters and around the words to make it easier for me to read. (I have a degenerative eye disease and am slowly losing my vision). I will be glad when I no longer have to stare at a screen for hours. Is there an opportunity to save the final pdf of the common app before you submit it? Thanks again, for your help.
  15. Please don't second guess yourself. I'm sure many of us have responded differently to some questions. If you haven't completed the counselor letter, get that done and then celebrate!! Ds needs to work on some scholarship essays but I'm focused on getting the CA done for early action deadline of Nov 1. Then, we'll deal with those other applications.
  16. Thanks, regentrude and Sebastian. I will skip the list of labs. We did a few at home and ds also did the Chem and Bio Landry Intensives. I only included editions for texts for example : Western Civilization, Jackson Spielvogel, Combined Volume, 6th Ed. My document was in Calibri font 12pt. I changed it to 10 pt and it went down to 565 KB with footer. I will play around with the formatting some more. Does using Bold, Underlining and Italics eat up more bytes. Ok, that sounds weird. :-) I do not have a separate list of books - major works are listed in the description. We also used Great courses extensively, so those are listed too. Any advice on the first part of my original post: Is the GPA ending date until the end of Jr Year since that is what the current GPA is based on? Thank you again for walking me through this.
  17. Sigh...my word doc is 12 pages. When converted to pdf with footer it is: 586KB and without footer it is: 483KB. Most of the courses are homegrown, other than Latin/Greek with Lukeion, Physics/Math with Derek Owens and some AP classes Jr,and Sr year with PAH. Should I delete list of labs - was hesitant to do so since colleges are so concerned about homeschool science courses including labs. Ds plans to major in Engr.
  18. I wanted to clarify a few things as I work on the CA today: In the student's workspace - Is the GPA ending date until the end of Jr Year since that is what the current GPA is based on? What do they want for: Highest grade/GPA in class? Indicate # of official transcripts: I just have one for ds but do I indicate two, if I'm uploading course descriptions as "2nd transcript"? I didn't know if the # indicated here is separate from the allowance of 4 transcripts. In the Homeschool supplement, where it asks for more info about philosophy, motivation etc, should I just state: "see attached school profile" or cut and paste the relevant sections. I managed to whittle down my course descriptions to under 500 KB (pdf) but if I add a footer it goes over. I am so sick of looking at this document...can I just attach it for the Common App without a footer or is that not appropriate. I am assuming that I cannot get to the Counselor letter part until the application is submitted. I'd like to work on that and be done with this part. I'm probably over thinking all this but any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
  19. Oh dear, does this mean that I have to give a shorter description on CA form in addition to just uploading my course descriptions. I think I am going to cry.......
  20. This. Yes, I have one friend in the area who also homeschooled high school. We've been propping each other up. Fortunately for her she didn't have to deal with the Common App. I am struggling to get through the CA in the midst of some major chaos in our family. So thankful for these boards.
  21. I looked at our local school's profile, some private schools in the area. and a few on this board. Here's what I ended up doing: Community Philosophy High School Curriculum and Grading Grading Scale Explanation of Credits and Transcript Educational Partners
  22. Once you start the application process for a school you will have a better idea of their preferred mode of receiving documents. For example, two of ds' schools used something called SENDedu through which I could upload documents online. Ds had to submit the application and then he received an email with link and password to submit the documents. Another school requires a notarized transcript so I will just mail out a package, priority mail with delivery confirmation.
  23. I was in panic mode last night. Ds and I thought that the teacher recommendation link had been sent last week, because it showed as "invited." However he received email from one of the recommenders that she still had not received anything from the Common App. It turns out we had to "assign" it. Ugh. Also, we wanted to send 2 teacher recommendations but the second one is listed as invited but we can't do whatever it is to assign him. I think I'm going to get an ulcer from the Common App. I know I should've been working on it earlier but life just isn't a nice, tidy package! I'm grateful that I can even tackle this right now.
