Picking and switching Doctors- Should I feel guilty?
TeaTotaler replied to Soror's topic in The Chat Board
Don't feel guilty. I no longer have patience with practitioners who are not going to be much help. Last spring, my primary doc referred me to an endocrinologist because she hoped the latter would be able to shed light on some test results that did not fit the rest of my health profile. After waiting for an apt and many $$$ later, she was not helpful at all. She just gave me the usual spiel and didn't take into account several other factors in my medical history. She wanted to see me in 3 months and run tests again. I cancelled the follow-up appt. I'm in the process of deciding if I should schedule an appt. with my primary doc or just keep looking for a Functional Medicine practitioner. -
Congratulations!!

If you want a low-key exploration of engineering you could look into the free 2 week program offered by Brown University in the summer. I tried to link it but ran into a glitch and lost my post so try googling for "Exploring Engineering at Brown University." Ds completed it last summer and enjoyed it. He had to watch videos daily by folks in different fields of Engr. He also had to complete a Lego project using Lego Digital Designer. There is no grade involved - it's mostly for exploring. Exploring Engineering Course Code: CEEN0914 May 19, 2014 - June 2, 2014. No purchase of text required. If you can't locate it, let me know. HTH.

A question for those who have used the REA book - did you have a plan for how you covered the material? I am trying to figure out how to have ds prep for the SAT Latin. He is currently finishing up his PreCalc course with Derek Owens and plans to prep for the SAT Math 2 test. Should I have him take the full length test in the Blue Book and work on weaknesses or just have him work through the REA book chapter by chapter? Any suggestions? Of course, after reading the other SAT subject test thread on "What is a good score", I'm wondering if ds should wait to take the SAT Latin in Dec or after AP Latin next year.

Paper planner gals, have you seen Bullet Journals??
TeaTotaler replied to Moxie's topic in The Chat Board
I took some pictures last week before I left town for the weekend but couldn't figure out how to post them. Trying again now...... I decided to put the index page at the beginning of the journal and left a few blank pages instead of putting it at the end. Ds looked at it and wondered why the index is at the front. I guess he's inherited a few traits from me. :-) I have a paper clip to hold the blank calendar pages together - the front of the clip showing the current standard monthly calendar page and the back marking the vertical monthly list. Clear as mud?? Hope the pictures post. Any more updates on how this is working for you all? -
Thanks for mentioning the Dec date. For some reason I thought that Latin was only offered once a year. Yes, I've heard that the SATII Latin can be nit picky about the grammar so ds will need to review thoroughly. This time of year gets a little crazy for us with recitals, concerts etc so there can be a some crash and burn by mid-May!! I am going to order the REA book and then let ds decide what he'd prefer.

I was planning to have ds take the Latin Subject test after completing AP Latin but ds and I are wondering if it would be better to take it after Latin 3 while the grammar is still fresh. I know Kathy in Richmond has mentioned taking it after Latin 3 but her dc are brilliant. :-) Ds will be taking 3 AP courses next year (none so far) as a Junior and he may be exhausted once those are done. On the other hand the prep for AP Latin should help. Mrs. Barr from Lukeion thinks ds would be prepared if he does some prep over the next month. Ds is already registered for the SAT II Math Level 2 exam in June. From what I have read on the boards, I can add an additional test on the day of the exam and I will be billed for the difference. Is this correct? Can I change the registration online now before the deadline? Any thoughts? I would post a poll, if I knew how to do so!! Thanks in advance.

National Greek Exam

I hear you on farming out Latin. I felt like I was holding ds back - you can see the variety of programs we went through. :-) I have some chronic health issues too so I've been saving my energy for the subjects I know that I can cover. You've done well if you've helped your dd with Latin all the way through Latin 3. It was relief to turn over PreCalc to Derek Owens this year. Hope your family can go on a trip with the Barrs. Ds would like us to go on the trip to Turkey in 2016, right before he graduates. I guess we can dream..... -

National Greek Exam

For the last couple of years I have gone to Cincy with a friend. Ds insisted on attending this year just so he could meet the Barrs. How fun that you get to be in a lit class with your ds. -
Paper planner gals, have you seen Bullet Journals??
TeaTotaler replied to Moxie's topic in The Chat Board
Sooooo, I have been assimilated. Thanks for posting the link, Moxie. I saw it last week and have been mulling it over in my head. Other planners and calendars have just never worked for me and now in my old age I can't keep track of things in my brain and I'm losing those slips of paper everywhere. I already had a fat 3x5 spiral journal near my computer to jot stuff down but it's not organized like a Bullet Journal. I knew I would still need the standard calendar page and was going to print out the one from Donna Young but I like the one page format by MissZoot, linked up thread. I hope to use a spiral journal I got at B&N sometime ago for $2 on clearance so I don't have a huge investment if it doesn't work. I will paste in calendars for the 12 months and then start with the April pages. I will have the 1 page monthly list when I start each new month. I am still debating about whether I should put the index at the front and leave a few pages or start at the very end and work on the index backwards, if that makes sense. Yes, I'm just a tad crazy. :-) It's a good thing I'm taking a break from school this week - a belated post Easter/Spring Break/getting ready for convention week. I should do something productive instead of putting together a Bullet Journal. But hey, it may make me more productive...I hope. -
Must "Health" be taught in High School?
TeaTotaler replied to Garga's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Our state requires a semester course for the public schools around here. I don't need to follow those guidelines but I want to make sure we are covering stuff that the colleges around here will expect. I plan to look at Abeka at the convention - i have never used anything from Abeka before. I need something that will cover the basics since I don't have the energy to come up with my own plan. We will modify some of Abeka topics. Also, having been a long time subscriber to Nutrition Action - I will plan to use that publication. Of course, ds has heard me discuss health and nutrition since the time he was little so he thinks he doesn't need a separate health course! He has already heard me gripe about the Food Pyramid and other things so we will modify some guidelines depending on what text we end up using.
