  1. Yes, we skipped through most of it. You may see reminders to fill out your profile or something like that, We just ignored it and filled out the relevant sections.
  2. I completely understand your angst. I guess a safe approach would be to apply to a large school that has been accredited in most of the fields of Engr for several years, so switching majors would not be a problem other than possibly extending graduation date. My other concern is also keeping in mind what else a school offers in case ds decides Engr is not what he wants to do. We have had several conversations about this and he insists that this is what he is interested in. BUT....he is 17...he could change his mind. :-)
  3. Thanks ladies. I will be shopping for the Charge HR. Now to decide where to purchase it.... Is the customer service at the Fitbit website pretty decent? I don't want to spend $$ to ship it back if there is a problem.
  4. That's interesting, because a lot of the schools around here offer Alg based Physics in 9th followed by Calc based Physics in 12th. Do you or anybody else have a recommendation for a short programming course that could possibly be done over the summer? Is there a specific course at EdX or Coursera you recommend? Thanks.
  5. Thanks. Dh needs a new suit. Ds has been able to get by with one from JCPenney for his Symphony Orchestra recitals but it took forever to find it.
  6. Yes, type in "Mechanical Engr" in the program name field. Then pick a state. When I was first looking I just searched for the surrounding states, since ds doesn't want to be too far from home. Or you could leave the program field blank and pick a state. It will list a bunch of schools and if you click on each school, it will list the different fields of Engr that are accredited and when they obtained that accreditation. HTH
  7. I think it's helpful to read brief descriptions about the different fields when dc are younger. They could also chat with family, friends who might be employed in those fields. The summer between freshman and Soph year ds did a two week (I think) online course through Brown University which explored the different fields of Engr. Our state flagship unlike some other schools does not let you pick a field of Engr when applying for admission. Everyone begins with First Year Engr. Based on your GPA at the end of the year you are eligible for the different fields. It's great for not needing to commit to an area of specialization right away, but dc need to make sure they are on track academically. From what I hear, that First Year course load weeds out those not equipped. :svengo:
  8. I'm considering one as a gift to myself for my birthday. I was going to order the Charge from Costco but was wondering if I should spring for the HR. Where did you purchase your Fitbit HR...the website, another online site, store? Thanks.
  9. It has always been my dream to play the piano. I got a digital piano at 46 and took lessons for 2.5 years. I had to quit because of shoulder surgery (not caused by playing!!) which did not resolve the problem. Now I have vision issues which make it difficult to read notes so.....I don't know if I will be able to get back to it. :-( Ds decided he wanted piano lessons too, when I started. So, the digital piano is being used. Go for it.
  10. We used the translation by Richard Wilbur, ISBN 9780156881807. Our library had a copy - a bonus. To be honest, I didn't really compare translations but decided to use what was available. FWIW, Veritas Press uses the translation by Donald M. Frame. I haven't seen that version. HTH
  11. OK, that's what I needed to know. Dh and ds visited a school in category C. Dh's brother attended that school for Engr and has not had a problem with employment. I just wasn't sure if time has changed what employers are looking for. Ds liked the school - well known for Engr. They were upfront about their accreditation and also mentioned that it has not been a problem when students seek jobs :-) Dropping option C will shrink ds' list so I guess, we need to explore other options. He will apply to the large State school that is ranked well but thought it didn't make sense to apply to other large OOS schools when the tuition would be high. Some days this HS Counselor job gives me a headache. Thanks for posting. Editing to add: I already have the ABET website saved in my favorites folder.
  12. As others have stated: Lukeion classes have been money well spent. Ds a junior, started with Latin 2 at Lukeion and is currently in AP Latin. He insisted on taking Greek 1 last year even though I had some concerns about the workload, his other subjects and music commitments. He will stop with Greek 2 mostly because there are only so many hours in the day and he needs to get a few things lined up for pursuing Engr. However, he is glad that he will still have some connection to Lukeion through Mr. Barr's class on Research Writing. He would love to take a trip with them but I don't think we can make that happen. If your dd has shown herself to be responsible with Latin, I'm sure she'll do just fine. Time management is key!
  13. Kudos to you, for hanging in. How simply frustrating!
  14. Thanks. Ds doesn't want to be too far from home but he is open to options where NMF aid will make a significant difference in price. Your ds at UA appears to be thriving.....well done - ds and mom!
  15. That's a good question. He did the AP compatible version and would do very well on the practice tests but would miss several questions on the actual tests. I learned too late on the boards that the Thinkwell science tests don't always correlate well with the material covered. So I also purchased Zumdahl's Introductory Chem to supplement Thinkwell. I do think that taking AP Chem will be worth the time. The AP credit would be great but I mostly want to be sure ds has mastered the material. If nothing else, it will make freshman year a little easier. He has heard from lots of folks about the Chem class at the State flagship being a killer course and a "weeder class." Thanks for your input.
  16. 8FillTheHeart, do you know if UA requires a 4.0 GPA in addition to NMF for their full package merit aid? Also what does CBH stand for in your post above? Does one have to visit UA in order to be considered for merit aid? Not sure if we can fit in another college visit this spring. Thanks.
  17. I have no idea why the boards will randomly not let me post. Thankfully I saved my last post in Word before I hit post and I got the message "You must enter a post." Gah! Here's what I tried to post earlier: I'm sorry I wasn't clear in my OP. We are NOT considering any school that does not have ABET accreditation. I was wondering how one makes a wise choice given that: School A: has been accredited specifically in Mech Engr since 1936 School B: has been accredited specifically in Mech Engr since 1993 School C: has been accredited in Engr. B.S. since 1998. School C is a smaller private school where ds could get significant Merit Aid - should he consider it even though it is not specifically accredited in Mech Engr but is accredited for a General Engr degree? There are a couple of other schools that are similar to school C. Should we still keep them as safeties? Thanks.
  18. Would somebody let me know why the boards could be acting up for me. It randomly lets me post. Other times I get the message "You must enter a post" when I already am in one. Nothing I do will work. I just shut down my computer to try again and I got it to work. Please help. If you sent me a PM, I'm trying to respond.
  19. Yes, several moms who've BTDT have cautioned me to give this fact serious consideration as I've talked about the schools ds is considering. We will probably still go ahead and apply to UA or UAH because of the merit aid.
