  1. I have tried to do the same as snowbeltmom. The only problem I ran into was that Univ of AL required it on their online application. Ds is applying there because of the National Merit scholarship. I did not put SS# on transcripts or any other documents. I did have ds' date of birth on the transcript, his list of awards/activities and his personal essay. So far no school has had a problem. Of course, I still have a long way to go with the Common App. and not sure what info is absolutely required for it.
  2. I'm using Microsoft Word 2010. I had actually saved instructions you had posted back in 2013 about saving as pdf/a because I'm such a non-techie!
  3. Katilac and dhudson, I was waffling after reading your posts on previous threads but in the interest of my sanity and trying not to make the transcript cluttered I decided two weeks ago that I would stick with unweighted. Transcripts have already been sent to 3 schools. Also, the top four/five of ds' choices were schools that specifically requested an unweighted GPA. We'll have to see how this plays out for scholarships. It does help that ds has stellar test scores.
  4. I tried this when converting my course description word document to pdf (currently 11 pages, yikes!)and it didn't give those compression options. Will see if dh or ds can help. Right now I'm trying to see if I can keep it under 500 KB. Thanks.
  5. I too had planned for a subject transcript originally but when I checked our state school, it stated that they wanted a transcript by year. So I went with transcript where courses are grouped by subject down the left column but then the other columns listed each grade. It shows which course was taken in a particular grade. We can't skip the state school. If ds gets scholarships, it may be the cheapest. However, it's also ranked in the top 10 for Engr, so we'll see. We did joke that may be we should drop it because it is the only school on ds' list that requires the Common App.
  6. Please post the online tool used. I may be needing this too. Thanks.
  7. Glad to know there's somebody else who hasn't created one. My course descriptions for lit/history (which I'm still working on) will mention major works read. Also, ds is applying to schools for Engineering and none have asked for one, so I decided not to create a separate document. I am racing against time to finish stuff so the reading list had to go.
  8. Thanks for mentioning this. I was close to the limit and I still had several courses to finish writing, so I'm now cutting stuff down. Why is it that after converting to PDF, the file size increases? BTW, is using the Calibri font in 12 pt OK? It is not as common as Times Roman etc but with my vision issues, it is easier for me to read this particular font than some others. Just curious, what did you scan in color?
  9. Yes, I had heard this too. I checked our local public, private schools and they all gave letter grades for P.E., Health etc, so I decided to do the same. In my course descriptions, I did mention that for P.E. grade was based upon completion. The folks reading the applications can decide what they want to with the info. Also, after much wrangling, I decided to go ahead with unweighted grades. Will see how that turns out for us.
  10. Thank you. The autoimmune flare has subsided; other health issues keep swirling around but I am ignoring them right now in order to get college applications done. I read through the College Wise guide - wish there was one specifically for homeschoolers. I think you need to write one (in your spare time, ha, ha)! I started tackling the Common App on Saturday and got stuck on the all the info to be filled out regarding graduating class size, % attending 2 yr, 4yr college etc. Decided to bag it and continue working on course descriptions. Not a good start. Ugh.
  11. Yes, thank you so much, Sebastian. Three weeks ago, I did not think I would actually be able to get my paperwork in order (autoimmune flare for the past 8 months; other challenging life circumstances) but through God's grace and mercy and the information on these boards, I have been able to pull some stuff together. Still finishing up course descriptions and have the beast of the Common App to conquer. Thank you, again.
  12. Does anybody know what the size limit is for uploading course descriptions into the Common App? I'm still working on mine and don't want to make them too detailed if I will need to shorten them. Thanks.
  13. Yes, grateful thanks to all on this board. I have been in survival mode for the past 8 months due an autoimmune flare - those who have been on these boards a long time may recall my nasty skin condition that cycles through every few years. I am feverishly trying to finish up college apps and scouring the boards for answers. The next two weeks are going to kill me as I tackle the Common App. I told ds he will have to pay for a cruise for me once he graduates. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, TO ALL.
  14. Agreeing with Gr8lander, ds just averaged out the hours/week. Of course, I haven't actually started to fill info into the Common App yet, but ds has a document with all the info listed.
  15. I listed them at the end of our school profile.
  16. I haven't been able to post on the boards for several weeks (finally decided to try another browser - YAY), but I wanted to tell you that I am so sorry you and ds are going through this. Hope ds gets his strength back, his recovery goes well and you can get a break from all the stress you've had lately. :grouphug: :grouphug:
  17. Our optometrist's office charges $39. It's not covered by our vision insurance. To me it's worth it because I have vision issues. I have a degenerative eye disease and I'm slowly losing my vision. Was also diagnosed as pre-diabetic based on A1c, a couple of years ago - which has confused the specialists because none of my labs, tests etc fit the diabetic profile. My father has diabetes as did both of his parents. BTW, the degenerative eye disease is not related to diabetes. So, for me, I decided the added cost was worth it.
  18. I learned about Republic Wireless on these boards back in the fall. We had planned to get ds his very first phone for his 17th birthday - he was about to get his driver's license and it seemed like the right time. Both dh and I owned ancient flip phones and paid Verizon way too much money for how we used our phones. All three of us switched to RW with smartphones and pay a total of approx $35 a month for all 3 phones. We went with the $10 plan which has unlimited texting/talk but needs WiFi for data. We've had RW since the end of Dec and couldn't be happier. There will be an occasional glitch with texts but so far so good. My dh is grateful that I heard about RW!!
  19. I'm so sorry. :grouphug: :grouphug:
  20. I own both the WHITE and RED Kingfisher. :-) I have to figure what I'm going to save and what I'll pass along once ds graduates in 2016. Ongoing health issues have kept me from clearing out stuff but that will be the first order of business once ds goes off to college. Of course, there are several things that ds has made clear that I need to save.
  21. I found out about WTM back in 1999. Lurked for 1.5 years. Board handle changed with the various moves our family made but have had the current one since the new boards began in 2008, I think. I'm not a prolific poster as you can tell from my post count but I wouldn't have made it this far in homeschooling without WTM and the boards. I do miss some of the old-timers who've moved on. :-( P.S. I have not been able to post on these boards for sometime...decided to try Chrome and it worked. Ugh I think the problem is IE.
  22. Not sure why the boards just seem to regularly glitch for me... It's Tina in Ouray. I have some of her posts printed out from way back. She now teaches at Logic at Harveycenter.org. I won't even try to link. :-)
