  1. In addition to those items already mentioned: Crockpot for quick meals when you don't want to mess with several pans. Chargers for electronics, phones etc. A special board game for the dc. Definitely toilet paper and the shower curtain and rod. :-)
  2. How important a consideration should ABET Accreditation for a specific major in Engr be in choosing a college? For example the flagship state school that ds is considering has been accredited specifically for Mech Engr for decades. He is also looking at a couple of smaller private schools (if he gets merit aid). However the latter have accreditation for General Engineering but not specifically for different majors within engr. Will this affect future job prospects? Anything else we should consider in terms of accreditation? Thanks.
  3. Y'know there are only so many hours in a day. I had my eye on the AP Stats course for some time, since Carole has been another WTMer. Unfortunately, adding that course just hasn't worked for us. I sigh wistfully and remind myself that we are teaching our students how to learn and they will continue to learn material we never got to during High School. I have to keep repeating this to myself as we near the end of the High School years. So don't beat yourself up. :grouphug:
  4. For the past couple of weeks I've been chatting with a couple of parents who have walked this path with their students (one homeschooled, the other public schooled). They both recommended that ds do both AP Chem and AP Physics C. Our town's public school sends a high proportion of their students to the State University that is high on ds' list right now. Both moms said that in order for ds to have a shot at the Honors College at this Univ he will need to have AP Chem and Physics C on his transcript. Sigh... I wrote to the professor who teaches Calc 1 at the local university over 3 weeks ago and still haven't heard back. I know profs are busy but it makes me hesitant to pursue dual enrollment. I may just stick with AP Calc BC with PAH. I am really torn. I feel like thus far, we have gone with ds' interests in Math, languages which is why he pursued Spanish in middle school until the end of 9th grade. He decided to continue with Latin and add Greek in 10th. He will finish with AP Latin and Greek 2 in Jr. Yr. but it seems like we now have to make up with the sciences in Senior year. Those who know my son feel that he is capable of handling the heavy load...but I really don't want to spend senior year like this. FWIW, ds is willing to take both sciences along with Calc BC and AP Engl Lit. I just don't know if I can bring myself to sign him up for this. Sorry for rambling.....any additional thoughts? Thanks.
  5. Belated thanks, Anne. The boards got wonky for me as you can see from that weird font in my previous post. Then it quit working for me. So happy I can post again. :hurray: I will keep this class in mind depending on how crazy ds' schedule ends up being.
  6. Yay, I can post again :hurray:
  7. Haven't been able to post for a couple of weeks. Trying again. Testing........
  8. Anne1456, I had saved the info about the @ea course sometime ago but have been concerned about being the Facilitating Teacher. Any thoughts on assigning grades etc. Thanks.
  9. We have been using the combined volume 6th edition, copyright 2006.
  10. January Jitters, followed by February Frenzies.....what's next - March Madness?....sorry couldn't resist.
  11. Lisa, I don't have any advice except to say that we should meet for coffee or tea in cyberspace - my head hurts (see my current science advice post). I feel your pain. :grouphug: Hope the knowledgeable ladies on the board chime in.
  12. I posted this in another thread but thought I'd post in this mega thread too..... Our local school doesn't offer the Latin exam so I offered to pay for proctoring. I have to pay $60 for proctoring the Latin exam plus $91 for each exam. He plans to take English Lang, Calc AB and Latin. Over the years I have tried to build a decent relationship with the school with ds taking the AMC, PSAT there. I contacted the school early in January, a week after classes started.
  13. Thank you all for your responses. I can't multiquote so I'll try to respond in a way that makes sense. Kiana and Janet C: Ds is more interested in Physics but we thought getting a solid course in Chem through AP and possible credit for an Intro course might make more sense if he's going to take Physics in college anyway. 3bookworms: If ds decides to do 2 sciences, we may drop AP Engl Lit. The school he is considering gives credit for both Lang and Lit. A computer class would be great but we are running out of hours in the day with different online classes, and ds' violin and piano lessons. Jen in NY: I have no idea what MatLab is....(embarrassed). Regentrude: Yes, we thought we'd get Chem out of the way if possible. I also remember your posts about having to undo bad physics habits with the students you teach. :-) We are concerned about ds competing against those who have already completed Calc based Physics in High School. TechWife: Thank you for your post. Believe me, I want to keep Senior year as stress free as I can. Dh and I have discussed the very issues you bring up. We have tried to maintain margin in our lives which is why Sr Yr is posing such a challenge. The next step for some of ds' courses are going to be AP or DE - we don't have a choice. Ds is a strong student but I also want to avoid burnout. We are already doing college visits this spring. He took the SAT in Jan and is done - may take the ACT this June. He took the ACT 9th grade through NUMATS but it was without the writing portion. Yes, we have also thought about travel to grandparents - if we can swing it and IF college apps are done we hope to visit my parents over Christmas break - they live half-way around the world. :-) Thanks again to all, for your thoughtful replies. Lots to consider. Ds has decided not to apply to Ivy League schools but the school that's on the top of his list currently is our state school which is usually ranked in the top 10 univs for Engr - so it's pretty competitive. Off to ponder.......
  14. Ds is currently using the Kolbe syllabus (Dragonfly book) for Honors Biology. It's not his favorite science so we wanted something straightforward and adequate. Dh is the biology guy in our household so he is grading the short answer/short essay questions for me. Yay! Ds is signed up for the Biology Lab Intensive with Landry. If things are not adequately covered we will do some more lab work in the summer.
  15. Ds is currently a Junior and has taken these Math and Science classes so far: 9th grade: Algebra II (at home); Honors Physics (Derek Owens) 10th grade: PreCalc DO); Chemistry (Thinkwell) 11th grade: AP Calc AB; Honors Biology (at home using Kolbe Syllabus) Courses for Senior year: US History Part 2 Govt (1/2 credit) AP English Lit PAH - he wants to do this after enjoying Eng Lang this year Research Writing (Spring) - he had to find something at Lukeion after he finishes up AP Latin, Greek 2 this year :-) Math AP Calc BC at PAH or Dual Enrollment Science: ????? AP Chem through PAH, or through DE. Should he take AP Physics C through PAH instead. He plans to begin the Physics sequence during his Freshman year at college regardless of score if he takes AP. Would taking Chem or Physics Sr year be better for him as an applicant for Mech Engr? Does he need to double up......ugh. Please share your thoughts, suggestions. TIA.
  16. Our local school doesn't offer the Latin exam so I offered to pay for proctoring. I have to pay $60 for proctoring plus $91 for each exam. He plans to take English Lang, Calc AB and Latin. 17. Ds is currently using DO for AP Calc AB. Quark has already linked to more info about the course. If you have more questions, let me know. Ds has taken Physics with DO in 9th; PreCalc in 10th. We love him as a teacher but he is a wonderful, kind person. Wish he offered AP Calc BC. Ds opted to continue with DO for AB because he didn't really want another Math teacher. :-)
  18. Yes, this can make planning ahead a challenge. Ds hit the year of the changes for AP Chem so we opted out for that year and also because I realized a little late that most recommend taking a full year of Chem before AP Chemistry. Aaah..live and learn. With all the recent changes you may be OK for the next few years. Of course, one never knows with the CB and Common Core :-(
  19. Another one who suffered severe cramps, nausea, passing out. Dealt with it by taking pain killers and sleeping with a hot water bag and missing out on life a few days every month. Years later when dealing with infertility discovered I had severe endometriosis and fibroids. So very sorry for your dd.
  20. :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: Jean, hope you get better soon.
  21. How frustrating! Hope you can log in soon. I just happened to log on early because dh and ds left early that morning for a college visit.
  22. Ds absolutely loves DO. He's taken the following courses: Physics (9th), PreCalc (10th) and currently in AP Calc AB. He is enjoying the course but he won't take the exam until May so we don't have any BTDT advice. DO is very responsive to questions so you could email him if you need more info/advice. Hope others chime in...
  23. Thanks Kiana. Good questions..... I think ds would rise to the challenge but I'm sure I'll hear grumbling through the semester. :-) I also try to build some margin in our lives and I don't want senior year to just be characterized by intense classes with no room to breathe. Unfortunately at this point, the logical step is an intense course whether AP or DE. I also want to be mindful of the craziness of college apps etc. About the sequence and who will be in the class with him - your points are excellent... I was only considering this particular Math class because the prof has a good reputation so if he tested out of Calc 1, I would prefer ds to take Calc 2 with him in Spring. So then I have to come up with a plan for helping ds review and stay current - not a fun job for me since I've never taken Calc. The only other option is the PAH Calc BC course where he will repeat the first part and continue on. However, I am concerned about this class after 8fill's post recently. Aaargh.
  24. Thanks Kathy. Your post was very helpful. I probably should have had ds take AP Calc BC but with AP Latin and Greek 2 with Lukeion taking a chunk of time, and also trying out PAH with AP Engl Lang I wasn't sure. Ds' desire to stay with DO led me stick with Calc AB. Also, when I was trying to figure out what to do, I thought I remembered folks who took Calc AB followed by Calc BC. A friend of ds' who attended a G&T school in Illinois did just that along with several others at this school. Oh well, live and learn. I'm now wondering about his science sequence, but that's another post. :-) I planned to email the local prof and get some info before we proceeded with plans for DE. I wanted to get a sense for the differences in the texts before I contacted him. DE is not cheap here so I've avoided it so far. We also need to consider the disruption of driving there 3X a week, trying to fit it around other online classes and his music commitments. Thankfully ds got his driver's license recently so he can get there himself. With my vision issues, I try not to drive unless I have to. Thanks again for helping me think this through.
