  1. I'm in Waldorf Maryland (Charles County- southern part of the state). I have power, but friends within a couple miles on each side of us have lost their power. We have a lot of rain and wind- really picking up out there. Just hoping my new apartment on the Eastern Shore is okay- I'm about 45 miles from Ocean City, but right on a river.
  2. Yes. I'm actually excited because the bathroom in my new apartment is large, and there is a little corner area that is nice and far from the toilet and will be perfect for a basket of books. (FTR: I have toothbrush covers AND they go in the medicine cabinet, and I spent a long time training DD to ALWAYS put the toilet seat down before flushing. :tongue_smilie:)
  3. I would think it was extremely tacky, and may or may not answer. (FWIW: My daughter, 5.5, is not by my boyfriend, but since we all have similar coloring and DD looks SO much like me, people automatically assume he is her father, which brings about some equally interesting conversations. My children won't have the same father, and some won't even have the same mother since he and I have already discussed adoption.)
  4. DD is young enough that it hasn't really become an issue yet. I'm Mimoo to one of my friends kids. Her younger daughter started calling me that when she was about 18 months old and it stuck. We aren't sure where it came from. To everyone else I'm either Kymmie or Aunt Kymmie. Or Jenna's mommy. :tongue_smilie: I'd prefer not to be Miss first or last name. It just doesn't fit me.
  5. My daughter is 5.5 and still needs my help. Our water is set pretty hot and I don't want her to burn herself, so I set the temp, and her hair is very long and she needs my help to wash it. She can wash her body though. :tongue_smilie:
  6. :iagree:My daughter went through a period of really wanting to go to "real" school. After some conversations, I realized that she just wanted to ride a bus and thought school was playing with her friends all day. I reminded her that we ride buses when we go to DC, and let her know that she would be going to a completely different school than her friends. I also told her that if she went to school she'd have to take naps and couldn't learn French and couldn't go to dance as often. That was pretty much the end of the school idea for her. Is there anything in particular that the little girl is interested in that could be presented as a special thing since she homeschools?
  7. Could I get an invite? I requested one from pinterest yesterday morning... still waiting... :crying:
  8. As if I needed another time sucker in my life... I requested an invite, waiting for it now. It looks fun!! :tongue_smilie:
  9. I agree with this. I think there are some women (and families) for whom staying home is the right thing, just as there are some women and families who working is the right thing to do. I'm grateful that I live in a time where women are able to choose whether to work or stay at home, and other than heated "discussions" among (mostly) other women, we are able to pursue the choices we make.
  10. I really love my dog. I mean, really, really, really love her. So much that I'm getting her paw print tattooed on my foot.
  11. I'm a writer waiting to be published. I've been writing fiction (short stories, novels, a little poetry) for.... 16 years. My dream to is be published. The reality is that my non fiction will likely be published first- I'm hoping to get my honors thesis published when I finish it next year.
  12. Nope, for me the stress level goes down with the start of school. But... we spend the summers with my parents, so the stress has more to do with a certain grandmother overstepping her boundaries and trying to be mommy instead of nana.... :tongue_smilie:
  13. My welcome back to the boards after a long, busy summer! :D 1. I love to read. Love, love, love it. I will spend hours reading, pass up on sleeping and eating, and generally avoid being interrupted in favor of reading. 2. I'm a history major in school, eventually going for my PhD to be a college professor. I love Latin American history, especially 19th and 20th century Brazil. Don't ask me about it unless you have time... lots of time! 3. My daughter was a surprise and miracle. I have severe endometriosis and was told I'd never get pregnant on my own. I was also on birth control, and was only "with" her father one time. It was such a shock, I didn't find out I was pregnant until I was 4.5 months along, cuz I never expected it! 4. My favorite color is pink. 5. My last meal would be all you can eat Maryland blue crabs, medium rare filet mignon, corn on the cob, and a baked potato. 6. Two months ago I met someone. Completely unexpectedly, I met the love of my life. Things have been moving very quickly, but.... well, when you know, you know. 7. I want to travel, everywhere, but as of yet I haven't been off the eastern seaboard of the United States. I haven't even been on a plane. 8. I have 3 tattoos and one piercing. In about a month, I will be getting more tattoo work done on what will eventually be an entire back piece. 9. I am learning to speak, and teaching my daughter, both French and Spanish. 10. I don't vote because I have yet to find a candidate I can agree with. My "big" issues tend to fall on completely different sides of the political spectrum.
  14. Hi ladies. It's been a long time since I've been here- life has been very crazy around here. Broken down cars, working full time for the summer, a new relationship, family medical problems.... :svengo: Anyways, with summer nearing an end, I'm (still) lost as to where to send my notice letter. I gave up my old apartment and we are staying with my parents for the summer. We move into our new apartment on September 1st. Should I report to the county my parents live in, or wait until we move in and report to the county we'll be living in during the school year? I am leaning towards just reporting once we get moved in. But I don't want to create a problem by not reporting before school starts. The law says that I'm supposed to inform the school system 2 weeks before the school year starts. (Oh. I'm in Maryland. The county we are staying in right now is Charles, the county we are moving to is Wicomico.)
  15. I'll be there!! :D My 5 year old is a loooong way from high school, and as much as I *want* to do nature study- it always gets shoved aside. :tongue_smilie:Looking forward to hearing you.
  16. Good idea. I wonder how many people would be interested in joining.... (off to post a thread asking! :D) ETA: It's not against the rules or anything if I start a thread about starting a yahoo group devoted to politics is it? Just want to make sure... can't afford to get myself even temporarily banned from these boards, then I might have to do something crazy like.... teach my child. heh.
  17. Slight hijack. How is the public transportation system? Is there somewhere outside the city to park and take the metro in? Is there an all day pass? If I wanted to see some of the historical sights, can I reach by metro? :tongue_smilie: I've always wanted to see some of the historical "stuff" in Philly, but I've never made it there. I'll be coming up that way for the RFWP conference in two weeks and thought I'd go to Philly for the day before heading to.... (uhm, whatever town the conference is in. :001_huh:Total mind-blank!)
  18. my mini me. :D Not very descriptive huh? But oh so appropriate! Okay, okay. imaginative, intelligent, sassy.
  19. I understand why this is a rule, although, I am disappointed since I enjoy the opinions of many ladies here. Especially the ones who hold different opinions than myself. Is it okay to ask where we can discuss political issues? Does anyone know of a board where political issues are discussed for real? (As opposed to drama, name-calling, and ridiculousness.) Would it be acceptable to start a social group here on the WTM boards? (Related- is there a way to limit membership so that we can keep it to people who want to discuss political issues friendly?)
  20. :glare::boxing_smiley::thumbdown::ack2: Not you. Him. I really can't stand animal abusers. Especially dogs. (Animal abuse period bothers me- but there's something special about dogs. Man's best friend and all.) You did the right thing though. You are vulnerable anyways, with your physical state, and then being pregnant on top of it. Calling was the right option.
  21. If I were a camping person- sure! I have big dreams of taking DD camping. It sounds so exciting, and I know my way around a gun enough to protect us from anything we need protecting from. But I have a horrible phobia of snakes. I'm scared enough that I won't camp just in case. :tongue_smilie:
  22. I will never use glue traps myself, but snap traps aren't necessarily the best answer either, and I will never, ever use one of those. When I was 17 or so there was a mouse at my parents house so they set a snap trap. I was laying out on the couch watching TV when I heard the trap snap- and then listening to the poor mouse struggling to get free. It actually had me in tears, and I ended up waking up my parents to do something about it. Horrible experience.
  23. My lab doesn't like rain either. Her mother hated rain also. Both dogs will/would refuse to even go outside if it was raining. Of course, these two dogs also played in the snow for hours, and would go out to go "potty" and come back soaking wet because they'd been for a swim in the pool... at midnight. :glare:
