  1. I love the idea, but I don't think I can make it a high enough priority to happen (something always has to give) unless one of my dc expresses interest in their own. We've been working on Spanish and this year added Latin, both choices reflect my perceived ability to teach them. I would like to add a third language in 4 years, but likely it would really replace one of those. Your idea if getting them conversational in multiple languages sounds so practical! If there is not enough interest for deep study of one language, why not be functional in many?
  2. Thanks Jaderbee! Lewelma has set me up with an approach here and in her non-fiction thread, but I need a list if options for the year I'm order to make it happen and you just have me a great leg up.
  3. Wow! Extra points if the copy you end up with originally came from your library. :-)
  4. Our library has Muzxy available online, you watch a video segment and then there are computer games loosely associated with the segment. We liked Salsa once a week, also. I think they're are worksheets available for those episodes (but we didn't use them) Do you speak any Spanish? There are other resources available if you can handle pronunciation or are okay with instructions in Spanish. For my dc, it is helpful to have a variety of activities throughout the week, rather than the same curriculum every day.
  5. If you have a university near by many departments will have outreach coordinators. We had a great hands-on presentation by the guy from the physics department.
  6. This touches a sore spot for me because my bottom of the line, 20 year old KA has recently started ejecting the bowl when I make two batches of ww pizza dough. 800 number was nice, but not forthcoming with any help or much hope of fixing it. I'll try, for $15, but if that doesn't solve it I'll be looking up this thread.
  7. Carrot-Cranberry Sautee 1lb carrots (cut the babies in 1/2 or 1/4s long-way, so you have sticks) 1tsp salt 1Tbsp brown sugar 1tsp cinnamon 3/4 tsp dry mustard 1/4 c. o.j. 2Tbsp butter 1/2 c. dried cranberries 1/3 c. coarsely chopped pecans (perhaps toasted) Place carrots in a pan with 1/2 tsp salt. Cover with water, bring to a boil, reduce heat and cook 10 minutes until tender. Drain. Combine brown sugar, cinnamon, mustard and remaining salt in small bowl. Add o.j. Melt butter in large skillet. Add carrots and o.j. Cool 2-3 minutes or until carrots are coated, during frequently. Add cranberries; cook until heated through. Garnish with pecans.
  8. "New to homeschooling with questions" Don't worry, you'll love it. It is a lot easier to be able to ASK if they understand a concept as opposed to trying to guess from their body language or watch for eye-glazing.
  9. What do you like to do with raspberries? Give them to people I don't like, usually as they are walking away.
  10. Totally crazy-making, I agree. It always makes me feel pity for those poor early settlers whose houses were so leaky the wind came right through, you couldn't escape it at all. Some did go crazy, apparently. :-P
  11. When I did that, I used lessons from BFSU as a spine. We focused on physical science for the FUN! factor, plus the other mom and I both have ME degrees. How fun to work it with someone else, I'm jealous.
  12. "Fathom Events" does simulcasts in movie theaters of all sorts of unusual productions. We enjoyed Swan Lake, by the Royal Ballet, and sadly had to miss the ballet Sleeping Beauty recently in our local theater. You might be able to find a participating theater near you. It was really well done, and included the intermission. :-)
  13. I had a Pyrex that broke. Bummer. When I called Pyrex, though, they sent me a new one. So there is that. That said, we love Denby here too.
  14. I am counting too! Just took a week off, we have 8.5 left -but only 7 in writing, 5 (2x wk) in the Spanish text we are all tired of, 10 in history, but we can squeeze that in! I think everything else goes until I want to stop. Then 2 weeks off for travel and camp, then summer session starts. We're still far enough removed from summer that it feels vast and endless and I'm sure we will get lots of work done in addition to playing...right?
  15. My kids are much younger. For all of us it helps to have variety. One day we watch a video, two days I read to them or they read to me - picture books or Frog and Toad, two days we use a Spanish curriculum. Next year we will use Spanish Now! which is similar to BtB, but with short cartoons, more pictures, fewer pop culture references, in other words more suited for my 9yos. I will also have them watch episodes of Mi Vida Loca from the BBC. I have fewer suggestions for Latin. Is your ds far enough along to spend 20 minutes a week translating Cat in the Hat or The Giving Tree? Mango languages has Latin, could he do that once a week? In both cases, when translating, have them write down any words they have to look up, asking with the translations. Good luck!
  16. None of us got excited about LOF. One of mine alternates BA with MEP, the other does MM. BA probably won't publish fast enough to stay ahead of your dd, which is why we alternate. I abbreviate a fair amount since topics are covered in both places which gives both extra coverage from different approaches and a chance to be sure that the topic had beaten thoroughly understood.
  17. Yep, that's like saying the big bottle of pop out bag of chips is 2 servings. Not many people actually measure it out. I wonder if anyone sells "serving size" bowls, like with 1 1/2 c. capacity.
  18. I've been looking for a copy of Dolciani, so although I can't help with your question, if you want to turn a small profit on those books, pm me! Good luck, Susan
  19. Quit Spelling SWO in favor of vocal or root study? (7th and 4th graders) Well, "SWO" is certainly easier to spell than "vocab" (obviously) or even "root study". I even have trouble with easy ones like SoTW, so I may not be best to advise.
  20. You could stay him with No-Stress Chess. It is meant for two players, but at the easiest level, you turn over cards and it tells you what to do. We like Rush Hour. Usborne makes packs of write-on, wipe-off cards that might work. I bought them for car rides, but the 50 secret codes one needs scratch paper and pencil. The 24 Game is a solo pursuit. Set can work alone. Tangrams?
  21. We just got, and enjoyed, Forbidden Island, which is collaborative if you want a change of pace.
  22. Cook's Illustrated says, for roasted cauliflower: 1. Oven at 475. Trim cauliflower and cut into wedges (8) Place wedges on foil-lined, rimmed baking tray. Drizzle with 2T. Olive oil sprinkle with salt and pepper. Flip over slices and repeat. 2. Cover sheet tightly with foil, cook for 10 minutes. Remove foul, roast until bottoms are golden, 8-12. Flip, roast other side 8-12. Yum. Ina Garten has a Brussels sprouts recipe in "The Barefoot Contessa", similar process, no initial streaming.
  23. Eventually they will (probably) stop and pee on a tree or bush. Ask me how I know...
