Help with options: Challenge B or TPS?
SonshineLearner replied to profmom's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
I'd suggest The Potter's School.... since you're asking. This is unless you know the Tutor and you're in love with him/her. If you're not needing the class for social.... seems like you've found something that can work for you... -
Singapore and a set of phonics cards could be a choice. You can either do a whole program like Writing Road to Reading or Spell to Read and Write. Either works... At that age, I'd suggest being willing to do phonics cards while they're bouncing if they're active... and doing math for just a bit a day. Lots of math games, books, talking about it... :)

What to pay a babysitter?
SonshineLearner replied to Staceyshoe's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I guess I'm thinking that most of these babysitters are teens who have health and such through parents. I'm not adding in anyone who thinks of this as their full time job :) -
My girls, especially my youngest, were on target to read latin fluently in highschool. My youngest was 3rd grade to start LCI, 4th for LCII, then Henle after that. She could have been through Henle I easily by 6th or 7th, and have done some extra work in a whole to part Latin text (like Oerburg's) by 7th and started Henle II in 8th. You have to decide which hills to die on, and this wasn't mine. I fully expect my son to be doing Latin at this speed, and need to buckle down and get going :) To do this... expect an hour each and every day, and practice between any school breaks. (including summers) At least.... that's what we did. (My mom taught them and scheduled it like a regular class. She had a friend and her daughter join them which made everyone accountable)

High school program for a miserable DD
SonshineLearner replied to jayb842's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
Clonlara? It has an accredited program. You can choose the sequence you'll go through... and yet graduate from an accredited school. :) -
What to pay a babysitter?
SonshineLearner replied to Staceyshoe's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Here's the crazy thing... that means that babysitting makes as much $$$ as me if I went to work... half of what most average adults make in an hour... and then of course it's all without taxes. My 16 year old was making $8. an hour credit bartering for the woman who cut her hair. That seems like a more than enough amount to me. I mean... makes me want to put my name out to babysit. -
:iagree: This was it; he was threatening, whether he planned to carry through with the threat or not, to kill them. It's disrespectful at the least... but if one of them men were my husband, I would have wanted the guy prosecuted. It was just as much... or even more... like the guy shouted out that he would kill them.

This is sort of an old thread. Challenge totally depends on the dynamics of the class and the Tutor. I think it's workable, most, if you are able to sit in with the student. I love the person who did our Challenge A... Love the man who did our Challenge B the first year when my step-daughter jumped in for a year... Not so much love the company and the percentage of $$$ that they take off the top of what the Tutor makes... Jr High is a hard couple years to figure out, but starting in 9th MFW has worked well for our co-op. You just need a leader :) (and I have thought of Potter's School, too!!) We also have a 2 day a week (afternoons) that I would look at, if our co-op doesn't fill my need. (My son that I'm still hs is in 3rd this year.) I think that the best experiences I've heard are where the tutor does what is best for their class and doesn't mind if it's not totally in sync with what CC wants....

I don't believe this to be true, in most places at least. You have to specifically sign for the vaccines your child is given. If the sheet says "tetanus" and you were given another shot, that's not the fault of the parents.... but rather the DR or Nurse. I did hear one thing and sign another... at an appt once... and that was my fault as I initialed for it.

Dog People, I need help.
SonshineLearner replied to athomemom's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Also, as far as how to get him to go... walk him by a fire hydrant or other places that dogs have gone. Relax the leash when you're there... encourage them to sniff around. Don't go back in till he's gone ;) (And right when he starts say, "Go pee-pee" or something easy like that) You might even give a small treat and a "good pup" when he goes... -
Dog People, I need help.
SonshineLearner replied to athomemom's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I kept mine leashed to me for quite a while. I can tell my dog, "go pee-pee" and he knows what I mean. Before I pop him in the van, I often tell him to go so that he's not having to wait on the ride. I would tell my kids to make sure he realllly goes... not just marks... outside. There's a difference, and once you notice... you know what to look for when you're out. I took my dog out for 1 hr 2x a day, and about 20-30 minutes the other time. Rain or shine the dog still has to go out. Also, I suggest a dog training course right away. You can get 9 lessons for about $85 or so at a good place. People have their own style as far as what type of training, but personally I'd just suggest no "Petco" type training spots. Look at spots that board pups.... :) (And as far as taking him out, every two hours should be great, as long as he's really going at least every few. :)) -

VERY cool ;) My son thought he was getting away with something, working/reading his new BA comics instead of doing Singapore math today :)- 582 replies

Help! Booster seat for lap belt only...
SonshineLearner replied to BatmansWife's topic in General Education Discussion Board
No way... I'd wait to buy a van, rather than lap belt only. One option that you have is to spend about $500 for two car seats that are for bigger kids. I think that lap belt could work for kids that are that age... for a 5 pt car seat.... (Britax would be one) -

There were Tangrams available for purchase? (from the site?) If so, they should have had comments about what I might want to purchase to go with the books :) Also, I haven't noticed when the others will release. I hope they gain speed, so that we can be more "on grade level" :)- 582 replies

Why should I NOT Buy Latin in the Christian Trivium?
SonshineLearner replied to Hunter's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Are you good with Latin basics? If you learn with singing, I'm thinking we'll like Latin Songs. It has classical and ecclesiastical pronunciations :) (It could go with any program) -
That's funny!! :)
