  1. I plan one year at a time. I create goals for each child and choose curriculum that will help accomplish those goals. Then I plan six weeks of assignments at a time with the 7th week as a buffer if we get behind or to do a special mid-term project.
  2. I'm still working on it. It will be based on the Middle Ages historical fiction with a couple good reads mixed in. Castle Diary Adam of the Road Crispin and the Cross of Lead The Adventures of Robin Hood (Puffin Classics version) The Apple and the Arrow The Door in the Wall A Wrinkle in Time Some books by Roald Dahl That's all I have planned for now and that isn't in stone because I don't have all the books to plan the chapters for daily reading. I generally purchase them because it always seems like the books aren't available at the library when we need to read them. It's better to have them on the shelf at home, lined up in order, and ready to read. This list might be helpful to get you started on some suggestions: http://www.abebooks.com/books/children-reading-lists-parents-teachers/50-books-children.shtml
  3. http://allinonehomeschool.com has as English section for each grade. I would beef up the grammar using KISS Grammar.
  4. Doing both would be too overwhelming and unnecessary. If your child is 12, just enroll in Challenge A. If your child was homeschooling with limited writing instruction, I might suggest a year of Essentials, but your child was probably doing a fair amount of writing in PS, so just move forward. :) The diagramming in Latin is fairly simplistic. You may just need to offer some assistance for that part if your child is weak in that area. If your child knows parts of speech, you will be able to move forward. Also, they will repeat that portion of Latin in Challenge B and Challenge 1 for complete mastery. Try to attend that seminar if you feel your child will need help.
  5. I would like the resource/curriculum tracking list as well. You should send them an email! I have issues with it working on windows phone and they kindly replied back stating that they are working on the issue and followed up a few days later saying they are still working on a solution and they haven't forgotten about my request. My experience leads me to believe that they have great customer service, so don't be afraid to email them with improvement suggestions.
  6. Maybe just ice instead of icy hot? The medicine should do the trick. Prednisone is often prescribed along side antibiotic for infections that have a great amount of inflammation. If you feel progress is slowing, then you do need to get her back to the doctor.
  7. Yes. And then we go over what they missed. I'll know if they cheat when the next test or quiz comes along.
  8. Mine goes to my church. I haven't had a deep spiritual conversation with him to know for certain but I would gather he is more on the conservative side. His practice is more on the conservative side as well. I don't think he pedals supplements except ice packs and icy-hot type stuff.
  9. Probably just a physical. Expect the Dr. to order standard blood work based on your age, check your blood pressure, discuss anything that is ongoing, immunizations, etc.
  10. Both projects got a blue ribbon! :hurray: I don't think we will do cooking again next year. That was too stressful! Cajunrose, does your fair having "read a book"? That's an easier project. Also, don't feel bad about doing one project really well your first year.
  11. This summer it has been mozzarella chicken brats on the grill or Taco Salad.
  12. Hank the Cow Dog Hank Zipzer Series (I know :001_rolleyes:, but my kids love these books.) Troll Trouble Series And I really think Calvin and Hobbes has increased my boy's vocabulary and reading level. They read those books over and over and over...
  13. I get more spam calls on my google voice number than ever. I must have a setting that is incorrect. I disconnected my landline because I was so sick of the calls. I have only had one on my cell phone and that was today.
  14. I have a little cookie scoop from PC but of course I can't find it! I forgot to buy a new one for tonight's preparations. The projects have been that way this year. I think it is from adding in the 2nd kid. I tried to encourage him to do rice crispy treats instead of the cookies. But no... I'm honesty not enough of a perfectionist for the county fair.
  15. We have to turn in the cookies tomorrow morning. DS is not getting that they have to be uniform and small to bake right. Anyway, the last batch had two perfect cookies but we need to turn in three. DH walked in and picked up one of the two perfect cookies and ate it. :banghead: Here's hoping the batch in the oven has two or we will be mixing up another batch. DS just came to show me a picture on his phone what they are supposed to look like. :p I''m glad we have technology to confirm what mom says is true. LOL! Anyway, my waistline seriously can't take another batch. Even if they turn out ugly, they still taste gooooooooood!!! Up next tonight is DD making cheese muffins. :svengo:
  16. You can get them by subscribing to CC connected on their website for PC use. I believe they are in the file sharing. I know for sure they are in the web-based tutorials that you get as apart of that subscription.
  17. It's not like we don't talk all the time about things he enjoys. It's NOT transferring to literature for him, though. This was a project that he choose to do and those were the requirements. I don't normally approach literature in that manner. But it was clear a total book summary was an issue for him when it was needed. I think I need something a little less abstract. I really do feel this is an issue.
  18. My oldest son, 11, t is really having a hard time summarizing books that he reads. For example, he made a really cute bookmark for the county fair about Origami Yoda. He had to include a card that told a little bit about the story. He has read this book multiple times but was stuck on retelling it back to me. He said "I'm just not good at retelling stories." I asked him about the setting, characters, plot, conflict, resolution and it started to come together but he was still struggling. I don't think it is a comprehension issue as if we do shorter readings or chapter by chapter, he narrates easily. I dislike the idea of making him do a book report occasionally, but that is all I can come up with to get him to focus more on briefly retelling the story and why he enjoyed the story. Any other suggestions or ideas?
  19. It's normal. I don't dwell on it because I don't feel like they are missing out academically or socially. I address it with the truth and the academic goals that I have for my children. But we also have a huge homeschool community with a lot of elective options and opportunities for that school socialization type groups. Choir, band, debate, prom, graduation and so much more. Of course, we don't have a Classical private school option which might throw a curve-ball in my thoughts. Address the burn-out though if you continue on. Get some rest and take a break! :grouphug:
  20. my cat came running in with a live baby rabbit a couple nights ago. It was screaming and caused all sorts of chaos until we got it out of the house. So it's possible your cat brought it into your house. No chew toys in the house, thank you very much!!!
  21. It's my first batch and it is really yeasty smelling. My DH asked me if I'm making bread. :D I'm giving it more time because it wasn't thick yet. I only drink the store bought and it doesn't smell yeasty. Is it really that different from the store brands? Of course, I never tried plain but at this point, I don't think I want to even put it in a smoothie.
  22. Some of us go through the drive-through and take it home to still sit down to a meal and spend time with the family. The restaurants are noisy and not as cozy as our home. It is possible to enjoy the food to satisfaction, too. A Smashburger on a whole wheat bun is so tasty! I really enjoy McDonald's Southwestern Salad. Pad Thai or a Curry called in to pick up in their drive-through is about the best thing ever and generally a cheaper way to feed my family than a burger joint! And our local food truck, while not a drive-through, but still faster food, has the best fish tacos! There is nothing better than picnicking outside the food truck when they stop nearby. And it's not like we do this everyday either. There are some days, that I'm not going to cook because I'm tired, sick, or just not in the mood. Most moms I know take this approach and are very careful about their food sources the majority of the time. It's trendy around here to eat clean, organic, and local. But balanced people still will hit the drive-through every now and then when life throws a curveball. To answer the OP's original question: My boys generally get a cheeseburger, ketchup only, and small fry. My DD loves a bacon cheeseburger, fruit, or yogurt.
  23. Set a timer and end at 30 minutes even if you aren't finished. The unfinished chores cycle to the top for the next chore round.
  24. I believe the sales are nation wide and are really just gearing up no matter when your schools start. I got some 1 cent deals, glue, notecards, pencils, at Office Max this week. I purchased two packs of Ticonderoga pencils on sale to get the sale prices, so the minimum purchase wasn't a problem. Meijer had spiral notebooks for 17 cents but I haven't seen them lower than that yet.
