  1. I have found some beautiful and shelf-worthy classics in the bargain section at B&N. They generally have a shelf or end cap that is for children's classics.
  2. I'm that way-- constantly shifting piles and overwhelmed with a messy house. I have to think my way through getting the piles put away. The item must go in a perfect place and if I can't figure it out, I keep shifting. I have similar issues when I approach projects. It's hard to break them down and focus or I focus on something too small and in depth. Maybe it's a form of perfectionism? I just consider it a personality quirk, though, not a LD.
  3. I would not give any of this information to a landlord or housing authority. They have no legal jurisdiction over this area. If I signed a lease and agreed to give a report card, then that is all I would be willing to disclose without them taking me to court. I'm all for tracking for my own purposes but I wouldn't go beyond what the law requires. Nor would I hand that information to just anyone.
  4. I have been playing with it and compared it side by side to some free ones. I have to say that I think I'm going to be shelling out the $65. It seems to be very flexible and intuitive when it comes to creating assignments. I have never seen any program that allows me to set up a repeating daily assignment but still edit some specifics for the day PER student. I am almost finished with six weeks of planning for my boys. DD's is harder because of CC Challenge 1 but we will plan that out weekly anyway. Try the free trial but you might end up hooked!
  5. Lol! I saw another ad that said the same thing for Aug. *2012*. In fact, it's STILL on their current homepage. Why hasn't that been updated? I'm not impressed. I want an online planner, though, so I keep looking at their pretty webpage. Their ads catch my eye.
  6. This is what I saw http://www.freehomeschooldeals.com/free-14-day-trial-of-the-newly-redesigned-my-well-planned-day-software/
  7. My youngest ds loves it also. But he has an artistic bent. My oldest son, the engineer, hates any and every implement used for writing. My DD was never into coloring either.
  8. I got an email or saw on Facebook a few days ago that it has been redone. But I think the release is coming in Aug? Ugh, I don't remember what I read...
  9. You can order complete kits for Apologia. Many science programs have kits to go with them. Or join a coop that offers a science lab. 😉
  10. I don't word it like a suggestion. I tell them, "pick up your stuff and finish your work in your bedroom," when the noise complaints start. And they don't get to do anything else until school work is completed.
  11. I obtained a copy of this DVD set a few weeks ago. :hurray: no books came with it. What do I need to get to go with this for my 3rd grader? Is it this http://www.excellenceinwriting.com/sim-ae? OR can I use a theme based book to use as the source texts after he watches the lesson? I think he will love the fables book but he enjoyed watching Mr. Pudewa and wanted to do the assignment for the lesson. I think he would take any source. Edit to add: I have TWSS DVD and have watched many of them, I also have the syllabus. We used IEW last year but not SWI.
  12. Why does the business structure matter? I am certain nobody at the local level is making a lot of money off of CC, even directors. They offer a service that some people appreciate and are willing to pay the costs. I don't think that is their emphasis from my experience in a community. In our area, it is exploding because families are interested. We don't even have to offer "sales pitches" and our 3 communities are full at the foundations level. As a Foundations and Essential Tutor, I never had to recruit or high pressure someone to join. Too bad someone did that to you. Just say "no thanks". Sure, support managers, directors, and tutors get paid per student and a certain percentage goes back to CC corporate. But I don't think it is an MLM just because there is a hierarchy to the management structure and a desire to grow a company for profit. That's pretty standard for a corporation.
  13. Most of my CC community is classical with a couple CM's mixed into the group. I know many that follow The Core closely or they do a mix of WTM with The Core. MFW and SL are very popular here with people not in CC. I don't know anyone outside of CC that follows WTM.
  14. You need more calories. That's not enough to sustain that type of cardio work. And it will make maintenance very difficult if you run your diet at that low calorie.
  15. I just came back from the Dominican Republic and I'm very allergic to bug bites. I only got 2 bites because I wore OFF! The entire time. Prevention really is best way and Benadryl cream for any bites that do occur.
  16. I tutored Foundations last year. I took about 2 hours each week for prep. Some of it bled into our actual instruction at home time since we worked a week ahead. I spent most of my time prepping for the science experiments and fine arts.
  17. Has your child complained about the markings? They bugged me more than my kids. My son even went through one of the readers and marked all the long vowels. He doesn't do that anymore. 😄 It probably won't jeopardize the program to skip them. There's so much to it, that we skipped a few things too.
  18. You can do CC at home on your own. It's more fun in a community so I'll encourage you to join. But not everyone can justify the expense, which is understandable. 😊
  19. If it is going well, why switch? My kids didn't find them confusing and easily transitioned into reading without the markings even in the early stages. 😉
  20. I want to repeat that CC's Leigh Bourtons does not advocate that a parent not teach LA and mathematics and only use the memory work for those subjects. Just the opposite, in fact. We focus hard on those subjects to ready our children for the dialectic and rhetoric stages of learning. I'm going to back up and explain a bit more. Most CC families I know add in more study to the memory work. I read or assign SOTW and Apologia to my children and do narrations or paragraph summaries depending on age. I don't coordinate with CC memory work. We do blob mapwork from the CC Geography. We also read the back of the timeline cards when we need to learn more about what we are memorizing and often use them for keyword outlining or short paragraph practice. But we do focus heavily on memory work, because I haven't found the extra to stick as well as the memory work until around 4th grade (YMMV), when they start to exit the grammar/parrot stage and start asking more about the sentences. That's my personal experience that happens to follow what is written in The Core. The idea is that they are always hanging things on those pegs and sometimes it begins with the memory work and other times it is something they read or experience. The method isn't to just teach them nothing but the memory work, but rather to focus on making sure the memory work sticks as a basic set of knowledge. And it doesn't have to be written by Classical Conversations either. My DD is going into Challenge I and didn't learn the CC memory work. She's doing very well with the few years of SOTW and Apologia science. I can't say she remembers everything and it isn't as focused as my boys are getting with CC. I personally would not say another approach is subpar to CC.
  21. Have you read The Core? They say you need to add in math and LA. The memory work isn't enough in those areas. I do think it is enough for science and history until about 4th or 5th grade. My DS10 asks to know more about the sentences and retains more information when he seeks it out. My youngest, seems to hold on to that memory work though but dumps other information out of his brain. I still do those other subjects but take a lighter approach. I focus heavily on the basics such as handwriting, spelling, copywork, reading, math, etc. My BF insists it is enough. She did MFW with her kids who are now in Challenge and says they don't remember much of it but the CC memory work stuck. These are really smart kids too and they are doing well in the challenge classes.
  22. Why start conflict that may only exist in your mind? Don't say anything unless it comes up. Surely they understand that kids are at different levels since they are teachers? If it does come up, focus on discussing mastery and not grade levels.
  23. When I go to any customer service desk at big box stores, I honestly rethink the idea that public schoolers learned how to stand in a line. There's always that passive aggressive person that is supposed to be behind the line that stands off to the side as if they would take the opportunity to jump ahead if someone stops paying attention. It's awkward and annoying. My kids get the concept of waiting in line. We've been to Disney World. 😉 problem solved.
  24. OP, Ask your dh to take you someplace so you can wear the dress, even if it's just the local pizza place! Hire a sitter and Have fun!
  25. I believe the formula that they use to calculate points is also based on how your body will process that nutrient. So if you are eating higher fiber foods, they may be more calories, but your body doesn't really absorb all those calories. Otherwise, they would just have you count calories. 😉 I think the days of starving yourself to lose are going by the way side. We can eat and still lose weight! My higher loss weeks involved a lot of exercise and eating all my points.
