skin care?

I'm 55 now and really need a new skin care regime.  I just can't find something I like or that works or that doesn't cost a fortune.  Some are too drying.  Some leave me feeling greasy.  Some cause breakouts.

What is a good cleanser for  55 yr old post menopausal women?  Moisturizer?  Other product??

What have you tried and disliked? Liked?

I have sensitive, combination skin, prone to small breakouts. I tend to check beautypedia for reviews on skincare and makeup. Then I cross-check them with reviews on Ulta, for "real people" feedback. :)

My current facewash is CeraVe Renewing SA Cleanser. I prefer it to CeraVe's Foaming Face wash (which can be drying for me). CeraVe is often recommended for gentle, non irritating products. CeraVe and Eucerin both have hydrating face washes if you're dry.

I follow this with a toner. (I alternate between a BHA and a more soothing toner, both from Paula's Choice.) These are pricey! I used a Clinique toner for years but they discontinued it, sadly, and I don't like what they currently have.

Then a moisturizer, perhaps with SPF for daytime. Some I've used/am using: Olay Regenerating Serum (smooth and silky feeling but maybe not enough if you have dry skin). Cetaphil's Redness Reducing Night Cream (again, probably more for combo/oily).

I feel like I've finally hit on a skincare regimen that I can live with, both results-wise and price-wise.

First, I use Trader Joe's Nourish All-in-one-facial Cleanser.  https://www.amazon.com/Trader-Joes-Nourish-All-in-one-facial-Cleanser/dp/B009DSXT80  I actually buy it at TJ's, around $6-7 I think.  I first learned about it from Paula's review site where she stated that it is essentially the same formula as one that costs $20 by some Dr and she was amazed at how good it was for the price. (I've not been able to find that review since....perhaps it was a little too enthusiastic for something not of her line.....)  Everyone I've introduced to this product has ended up liking it very much....

This is followed by Olay's Fragrance-Free Regenerist Serum,  https://www.amazon.com/Olay-Regenerist-Regenerating-Fragrance-Free-Moisturizer/dp/B0000CC64W/ref=sr_1_2_s_it?s=beauty&ie=UTF8&qid=1506274478&sr=1-2&keywords=olay%2Bregenerist%2Bregenerating%2Bserum&th=1  I usually get this with a coupon or sale from Amazon.  I keep it permanently in my camelcamelcamel price checker.  A serum goes on very light, very thinly and is chock-ful of good stuff for your skin.  I like to think of it as vitamins for my skin.

That is all I *need* on a daily basis.  Additionally, due to skin cancer concerns, I've since added 30spf sunscreen to my morning routine.  I've had good success with both Target's generic version of Neutrogena's Ultra-Sheer Dry Touch sunscreen

(or the real thing if on sale):  https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001E96OZQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1 and Olay's Complete Daily Defense All-Day Moisturizer with Sunscreen 30spf for Sensitive Skinhttps://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001F51TDG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1

I knew I had a winning combo when this past year, in seeing two different groups of people for the first time in awhile, a couple of people independently asked me what I used on my face because I looked good .... (I'm 57, and frankly I think I look like I'm in my fifties...I just didn't look older and dried out and wrinkly).

Sorry about the long links...not sure how to tighten them up but there are so many products with similar sounding names, I wanted you to see the right ones.  And while all those bottles are on the small side, they go on light and thin and last a good while for me.  Definitely been worth it!

HTH,

Sensitive, sunburn-prone, very white skin here.

I wash with Dr. Bronner's lavender soap.

I use Jojoba oil with a little infusion of Rose Hip Oil. This has been wonderfully moisturizing, no break-outs.

The jojoba oil I buy at a local health food store as well as the Rose Hip essential oil.

If I am going to be exposed to sun, I add sunscreen by Alba Botanicals.

I do well with Jan Marini, the C-Esta cleanser.  I use the Transformation cream normally.  I started this in my late 40s, and it's been great--one of the only skin care regimes that I have never become sensitized to.  (I have very sensitive skin, and a touch of rosacea, so I tend to use and then become unable to use skin care products over time.)  After a while, I decided that I needed something a bit gunkier, and I started using her neck cream on my face.  It's also cheaper, which is nice.  In the mountains where it's extremely dry I use the Age Intervention cream, which is even heavier.

Every once in a while, about once a month in the summer and 2-3X/month in the winter, I use the enzyme mask and cleanser to get rid of my dead skin cells.  It makes visible, brightening, youngerizing difference in my appearance.

I'm super happy with this brand.

Great ideas!!  I had been using some of the same soaps and moisturizers that dds use and love.  But, I think more recently my skin has just changed too much.  I bought CeraVe renewing moisturizer today and CeraVe SA cleanser.  We will see how that works.  I am curious about Oil of Olay though.  I keep hearing it is a good product.  The product line confuses me though.  There are so many.  What do use and what to use with each other?

Same issue - I can use something for a few months and then all of a sudden I can't. I'm going to try your recommendations here.

I have a skin condition that makes my skin sensitive and requires prescription products. I use Cerave hydrating cleanser and their moisturizer and another brand's sunscreen every single day. I find most sunscreens irritating or drying and use alba botanica very emollient mineral sunscreen in the winter, but have several I use in the summer depending on what I'm doing and how much time I will be in the sun. On a good day, I also use Timeless C + E + Ferulic acid serum and in the winter, I sometimes use Paula's Choice Resist super antioxidant serum, but only at night.

I have very sensitive skin, and a touch of rosacea, so I tend to use and then become unable to use skin care products over time.

I just went through something like this fairly recently. It was baffling. I had to scrap almost everything I was using for my face and start fresh. And these were products I'd been using for years. Suddenly, I had a red/irritated (dry, itchy, sore) face, with an unusual acne breakout. So bizarre.

I use the Olay Regenerist fragrance-free regenerating serum that is linked above. IMO, it's pricey ($24@Walmart) and it's not a typical lotion. To me, it has the feel of a primer (that silicone-y slip). I mainly use it alone, as a moisturizer or under my night cream, as more of a serum. Does it make me look younger? Who knows. :p. But it doesn't break me out or cause irritation, so there's that going for it.

I like jojoba oil too. My wurst area is around my eyes and I can use this without any irritation.

I think retina a might be your best choice though. With a prescription from your doctor it's almost the same price as over the counter anti-aging lotions with better results.

I just spent a small fortune on Beauty Counter products. I have a sweet, young married friend who is selling it. This is out of my norm because I despise MLM but wanted to support her. I really do like the products so far but I don't know that I will do them again due to cost.

I'm really interested in that Trader Joe's/oil of Olay combo. I have not used that particular oil of Olay product.

I'm really wanting a good eye cream that is reasonable. The one I just bought seems good but it is expensive!!

I am curious about Oil of Olay though.  I keep hearing it is a good product.  The product line confuses me though.  There are so many.  What do use and what to use with each other?

Back in the day when I first got started with Oil of Olay stuff, I took a good look at their website which describes the various lines (although there were fewer back then---the Regenerist line was the latest, greatest at that time).  They also have some questionnaires to give you a starting point.

In general, though, the Olay lines follow a four-step model of skin care:  cleanse, moisturize, daily care, special care.

Cleanse and moisturize are pretty self-explanatory  Daily care is the extras like sunscreen, eye serums, night serums.

Special Care is stuff like once-a-week masks.

Like healthy eating, I've found it is the daily stuff that makes a big difference.

So, for me, the Olay model works like this:

Cleanse (morning and night,):  TJ's cleanser, though I still have on hand the Olay Regenerist Regenerating Cream Cleanser which is what I used before discovering TJs.  It is also a good product)

Moisturize (morning and night):  Olay Regenerist fragrance-free regenerating serum.  I rarely need any other moisturizer but if I do, I have on hand the old-fashioned pink Oil of Olay moisturizer.

Daily care: (morning only):  30Spf Sunscreen (listed in my other post)

Special care:   I've discovered that I even when I plop down the $$$ for special masks and such, I never use them or use them once or find them harsh or whatever.  So, when I go all DIY spa-mode (once every six months or so), I just mix up some oatmeal scrub (oats blended to a flaky powder) with a sprinkle of Vit. C powder, make a paste, rub it on, let it sit while I deep-condition my hair,  wash it all off, and call it good!
