Do I want to drive 30-45 min+ in traffic to go downtown and then fight traffic for a parking space to find some good books (with the 3 kids) or not..... Oooooh - I really do want to go but..............I soooo don't. kwim? Dare I even ask - what do libraries sell when they have these yearly sales? Old beat-up copies of stuff? Donated books? If I don't go - what will I be missing out on? It's definitely needle-in-a-haystack there, but I found some good stuff the last time I went. I wish I didn't have to bring the girls to ours, actually, because they don't shop well these days, but DH works weekends now. However, mine is just at our little small-town library. No fighting for parking, just fighting for body space with the used booksellers who get there and fill up their huge carts with all the best books by 10:05 :rolleyes: Hmm...maybe I just talked myself out of going after all! With your age of children... unless they are extremely good about shopping, I'd probably skip it. You can always go next year! OTOH, I am also sorely tempted to go at the end, when I figure the books I am most likely to be interested in will be congregated among the ignored... Anyway, our library sales tend to be books that the library is discarding, and books which have been donated to the library. These latter can include everything from Great-Uncle Al's college textbooks on chemistry (if you are interested in 1940s chem), to the latest best-sellers, to old Landmark books. You might ask what the library does with the books which aren't sold. They may be donated to a thrift shop, and you could go and look at the leftovers there! Pster Posted January 25, 2008 Author Share Posted January 25, 2008 I think that is THE big turnoff - keeping an eye on the munchkins while I try to look at books. They aren't ones to stand next to my side and be still and quiet - they will want to look at the books too! Yeah....if there are a lot of people there (and there prob will be because it is the first day tomorrow) it will stress me out if I can't keep close watch on the girls. ok..... maybe I feel a little better about trying not to go! I was thrilled because I grew up always reading a volume while eating my breakfast cereal. That was my best find. I've had good luck with library discards of good picture books still in pretty good shape (Katy and the Big Snow, Marshmallow, The Little Engine that Could, a Jan Brett that I can't remember the name of, etc.) Last year I just parked my kids in a corner by the kids' books and tossed a few books at them to keep them occupied. And lifted my head frequently to check on them. There were several other families (some I knew) doing the same thing! I had no luck getting books on my home school list last year. We try to get there at least 30 minutes before they open the door. Last year we got there about 45 minutes early and the line was already half-way down the street! (Eleanor Farjeon is a favorite of mine and hard to find.) AND Mortimer Says Nothing. I was on the lookout for a 1911 Britannica I'd heard rumors about, but no dice. :( I got a bunch of good stuff though. It was totally worth the trip though, even though it was July and I had to drive to the county seat 30 miles away and the short route was blocked off because a bridge collapsed that morning (no really, happily no one died) and I had to go the long way around in heavy traffic. readwithem Posted January 25, 2008 Share Posted January 25, 2008 I've found a lot of bargains at ours. A few years ago I found a NEW set of History of US for next to nothing. The traffic and dealing with the kiddos would be a deterrent. Can you go at a time when somebody else can stay with the kiddos?
