  1. mostly math but I've had trouble with her doing it with most anything. Math just takes so much longer than it should. She knows what she is doing - she def needs the practice tho - or I would have cut her lessons short.
  2. I'm primarily thinking of my 8 yr old with math but I could probably use some of the ideas with my other 2 dd's too. thanks!
  3. She takes forever to do her math. She is 10 and doing Saxon. She *can* do it - she just gets sooooooo sidetracked. I don't want to send her to her room to do her math because I can't trust that she will stay focused on actually doing it - there are books and a computer and who knows what to distract her! So now I keep her at the kitchen table - which is in sight of me - to do her math but I still have to keep telling her "do your math!" - "do your math!" etc etc. Any ideas how to keep her focused on getting her work done? I guess it could be for any subject. I want her to focus on getting an assignment (whatever that may be) done before she lets her mind wander. Math lessons shouldn't take hours to finish! ty!
  4. thanks for all the tips... we've tried many of those shampoos and we will try the Neutragena next. (that was the one they carried at the food store I just shopped at) I think the whole oily hair thing bothers me much more than her! I think if I didn't point it out to her - she wouldn't have really noticed or cared so much!:tongue_smilie: We might have to try powder (would shower to shower work? or cornstarch?) - and we'll have to try blow drying it - I think I've noticed it def comes out nicer if she does that too. Glad we can commiserate together! I dont' remember this when I was 10! lol ;) And we won't touch the increased dramatics, crying, mood swings, and other hormonal issues we encounter daily! What a roller coaster ride!:)
  5. My dd10 is in that pre-pubescent area of being hormonal. The one thing that has been really awful is her hair! It is so oily! Does anyone have any suggestions on how to control it? It just looks so bad. We've tried several shampoos - even Dawn dishwashing soap! - just to get it to look normal and last for more than a couple hours. I've told her to forget using conditioner too. Luckily her hair is fairly short (chin-length bob) so getting a brush thru it isn't impossible. Any ideas? We'd really appreciate it! :bigear:
  6. ... actually that might be a good thing (lessons taking less time) - she was taking FOREVER to get thru 1 Saxon math lesson. Thanks for the comment!
  7. It seems like we have always been searching for a math curr that works for dd10. How does TT compare to Saxon? (math-wise - I know the basics of it) Would I need to supplement TT with anything? (ex - fractions? money? ~something like that?) Is she able to finish out her schooling with TT or would we have to switch over to something again down the road? DD10 is math-phobic and does not like doing it at this point. thanks
  8. I will check out cubits - never heard of it before.... ty I was playing around with a yahoo group and it looked like it could work for us but... in the database folders you can only type in 10 categories and I would need more than that.
  9. I just had a thought today and maybe someone is familiar with it... I am looking to start an online group for our hs group - I want to be able to categorize books that we all have as well as useful links for us. Plus, I'd like us to be able to "chat" like in a yahoo group. It would be a private group. I thought of doing it thru a yahoo group but... didn't think that would be a great avenue for showing what bks we all have available to share. Does such an online thing exist? Any ideas? thanks
  10. how did you pay? check? paypal? is there a way to stop it till you find out more? can you find them still online or selling? I hope you can still find them / contact them and figure things out.
  11. thank you ladies - that is who I was thinking of! I knew someone would remember!!
  12. I can't think of the name to google! It's been a while but I know she was on the boards a few years back... throw some names at me maybe it'll click!... :D thanks!
  13. I made one that I found from online and it was too, too sweet. I don't want to have to use cream either.... will it get just as thick if I use milk? thank you!
  14. My dear friend just told me she was officially diagnosed with RA. She just started on the prescription Methotrexate. What can I suggest to her? I know she is doing a lot of research on her own via the computer. Is there anything specific she should do? Nutritionally - what is the best approach? I'm going to look around online too to see what I can find out. thank you for your help!
  15. Definitely try it again and see how it turns out. Maybe the dough was overmixed? Did you let it rise long enough before baking? (sometimes I let it rise 2-3 hrs) Check if your yeast is still active. What kind of flour are you using? I'm sure you'll figure it out! The majority of my loaves have turned out great but I've had some flops too. It's bound to happen once and a while. enjoy! I love the ABIFM bk!!!
  16. Please explain to me how to do this. I dictated the sentence to my dd. Then I had her write a definition (hers) for perplexed. Then I had her underline the subject (1x) and the verb (2x). And then I corrected her grammar (she had missed an appostrophe s) and explained why. And finally she rewrote the correct sentence on another sheet of paper where she will keep adding the corrected sentences onto.... forming the paragraph. How is that? Did I miss anything or do it wrong? I was unclear as to the directions. ty
  17. I thought for a moment I had written your post! I have been using AAS for almost a wk with a 4th grader and 1st grader. I started them both on level 1 and they are moving pretty quickly so far. (this first wk is a review of phonogram sounds and they know that) From the advice I received - it is ok to move along quickly but it is better to review all the material so that there is a solid foundation. (I figure - I missed teaching spelling the right way the first time with my 4th grader so I want to make sure she "gets" it the 2nd time!) I don't feel there is too much prep work. Once you are familiar with it - you know what to expect. I've heard so many good things about AAS that I'm really looking forward to using it. I'm even going to start using level 1 with my beginning reader. hth!
  18. It's taken me years to get somewhere in solving this problem. (also helped that the girls got older) But... I started using workboxes and that has helped me tremendously!! The girls continue to work on whatever is in their boxes while I work independently with 1 of the others. I have 2 independent readers and 1 that still needs my help with things. I stagger the boxes so that the independent work is covered with the other 2 while I work with the other one on, say, math. We actually have been able to cover and use so much more of our curriculum & bks this way - it's been great. Workboxes might be something for you to consider. Check out the posts on the site!
  19. I'm so glad you guys brought this up!! I just started AAS level 1 with my 4th & 1st grader. They are saying "it's SO easy mom" but... I dont' want to miss teaching anything. We are moving quickly thru the stuff they know. However, while starting these first few lessons I thought that my k'er could do this. Reading is just starting to REALLY click for her so this would be perfect! She easily gets bored with the reading lessons and loves the hands on reading word games if and when I can make them up. I'm going to start this with her right away! (rats... I don't have cards for her! urrr - do I really need another set? do they use these cards for all the levels?)
  20. We just finished our first year of CC so I don't know that my plans will work.... But... I am planning on using our CC break time to continue to review the CC facts and stuff learned throughout Cycle 1. I think I figured on 2 weeks of work per 1 week of "school". We won't spend as much time per subject studying as in depth but the review will help them. We will read about the topics and listen to our SOTW cd's and maybe do a little more science exploration. We will have more time to spend on those things that we didn't get to the 1st time around...(like math and latin declensions). Maybe we'll branch off some of the science covered to learn something new or maybe I'll have them do a narration or lapbook on one of their studied science or history topics. We'll just have a little more time to spend it on things we may not have had the chance to earlier. I will only focus on the cycle for the year - and not so much on previous learned cycles. History timeline cards will be reviewed year to year but that is about it. hth
  21. I will ck google docs - thanks for the rec! Question tho - would it work to export all my open office docs to google docs? Or at least does google docs allow me to copy them to there? And... I can access all my google chrome bookmarks thru there too, right? I'm trying to get everything in 1 place so that if I do do a search of clouds or tags or whatever I call them - either my website links or my saved files would come up. Also - what if I have a file from HistoryScribe or something - where I purchased it? Can I transfer that over too? thanks for all your help!
  22. ....how do you do it? Do you make subfiles? Like under history - can you have subfiles for Medieval? Ancient? American? Or does everything have to be it's own notebook? I'm still trying to figure it out and see if it would work to use it for school stuff. I like it for my personal stuff tho.
  23. oooh - I just started using evernote this past week. LOVE it for all my note-taking tendencies! Haven't figured out how to use to incorporate all my files and folders.... maybe I should look further into it. ty!
  24. but aren't those sites just for saving links online? (btw I came across ikeepbookmarks.com too while searching) Those are great but - what about online saved files - such as an Open Office document or something? Maybe there isn't a way to organize those and website links.
