ktgrok Posted January 20, 2022 Share Posted January 20, 2022 Forgive mistakes as I still have to use speech to text. Saw the hand specialist yesterday. Most of the swelling is gone, still some in my fingers. My hand and fingers are pretty colors, lol. Everything from red to blue to purple to green to yellow. Oh and my wrist too, both sides top and bottom. And another bruise on my arm. Thankfully, nothing serious that requires major intervention. First doctor said no fracture, the ortho clinic said fracture of the wrist. At least one, potentially more. Wrist and hand specialist said maybe it is fractured maybe it isn't, basically there are things that look like they could be fractures but it could just be my bone looks that way - but given that the pain is directly where the things that look like fractures are, probably fracture. Nothing shows in the carpal bones but those don't always show. However I have almost full range of motion back and on exam he thinks those are probably fine. Lots of soft tissue damage. He said the fractures, if that's what they are, or not for thickness and not displaced so a splint for another three weeks. I got a splint that allows me to move my fingers and I'm allowed to do anything that doesn't hurt. I can take the splint off to bed and you warm water soaks or ice or both. I am much more comfortable now as I was feeling very claustrophobic in the big sugar tong splint. I would feel silly for having gone to the ER and specialist but given that tonight Walmart a week and I still have swelling and not gained back for dexterity, I can't take for instance even with the splint off, I think it was the right call. Hopefully that all comes back as the swelling goes away. He thinks it will. If not or if I still have pain in three weeks then I go back. At least I could sleep much better last night, the other splint was getting really itchy. This one is easy to unstrap scratch and strap back on. Although I did check with DH that after all those years of schooling and internships in residency is what he said was don't know if it's broken can't tell, if something hurts don't do it. I have a training and could have said that, lol!!! I've had ONE broken finger during all our years here. Some twists and wrenchings of this and that, but nothing like what you've experienced. Poor you. It was not overkill--I had an extended family member who just had surgery for a wrist broken and displaced in several places. Hands are important to get right! Chances are, the lack of the displacement is the biggest difference between his course of treatment and yours--if someone saw a break, it's probably broken. When he had his injury, he got a lot of advice to see a trauma orthopedic surgeon specializing in hands (he works in a hospital that specializes in children's orthopedic issues). Yeah I had heard too many horror stories of permanent disability or problems due to small breaks or tendon issues being missed. I guess a lot of the fractures in the wrist chest are not visible on x-ray. Who knew? And now the corner posts that we need are out of stock. We can't find them anywhere. We have Lowe's coming out to do a free quote a week from tomorrow in hopes that if we are willing to pay them to install it they can get a hold of the materials more easily than we can ourselves. ktgrok Posted January 20, 2022 Author Share Posted January 20, 2022 The colors didn't really show up as well in photos as they do in real life but this was yesterday. Each knuckle has its own little bruise plus the back of my hand is yellow and green in the front of my wrist. Redness on the top of the wrist and some lighter yellow there.
