Tohru
Is there something like this for an excellent reader, okay speller? I'm finding we're just not hitting spelling every day and I'd like to get something that he can do on his own - 4th grade. We usually do a combination of WRTR and Spelling Power, but it requires heavy teacher-instruction. Thanks. YodaGirl
My first thought is McGraw-Hill Treasures' spelling book pdf. I'm sure there are other options out there. https://www.mhschool.com/reading/treasure_workbooks/national.html
Zoo Keeper
Rod and Staff can be done independently Zaner-Bloser Spelling Connections or just get a Spectrum spelling workbook--you could add in word study as well, if you wanted or needed more "word work."

Ellie
Spelling by Sound and Structure (Rod and Staff). Spelling Work Out (Modern Curriculum Press) is a close second. SSS has some things that make my Spalding brain cringe, but mostly it's good. :-)
Hobbes
The Rod and Staff 4th grade level is excellent. We are taking a break to do some AAS since my 4th grader needs some foundational things addressed, but I'm still impressed by the R&S program and hope to come back to it. mohop
We used Phonetic Zoo for a couple of years and have started Spellwell this year. Phonetic Zoo is entirely independent (student listens to a CD of the spelling words being dictated everyday), and Spellwell is mostly independent, with the exception of the tests. homemommy83
We love Rod and Staff here! I also believe Spectrum Word Study books are great for more "word" practice as well.

Ausmumof3
Spelling workout works like that here. Kid doesn't love it but it gets done and the improvements have been significant.

Amy M
We tried Rod and Staff after AAS. It does the job, but I'm hoping MegaWords does even better. That's what we're trying next year. (starting in January)
Ellie
Highly recoomend Wordly Wise 3000. Isn't that vocabulary, not spelling?
