swimmermom3
For a student entering college in fall of 2016, we would fill out the FAFSA in January of 2016, right?
MysteryJen
Check with the school. Some want the Fafsa and the Profile early, if you are applying early.
swimmermom3
Jen, when dh started to fill the application out, it mentioned the student entering college in the 2015-16 year. This made us assume, we were too early. Now I am really worried.
MysteryJen
For ds1, I think we had to estimate by March 1 and fill it out finally by April 1. I just double checked and one school dd1 is considering requires the profile and 2014 taxes by Nov 1 for ED and EA (which applies to her as an athlete, I am pretty sure) and the FAFSA by February 1 and 2015 tax info by April 15. So there is a wide variation, I would just check. But you are not late, that is for sure :)
G5052
Widely varies, but figure January. We very rarely have all the numbers by then, but I already have a late-January weekend blocked out for the next academic year. I'll do a rough run on our taxes, and then that. That way I can finalize with just a few tweeks. I had all sort of problems the first round, so it should be better this time. We can hope. They haven't set the calendar yet, but last year it was April 1 for final numbers.
Matryoshka
I don't believe the real FAFSA is available to fill out till Jan. 1st. One school dd's looking at has a faux FAFSA they have you fill out if you're applying ED so they can estimate your financial aid, but it's not final till the real thing gets submitted.
JanetC
Apparently the FAFSA will open in OCTOBER now??? http://news.yahoo.com/white-house-announce-steps-ease-access-student-aid-012345445--sector.html

mom31257
So it's going to be based on the previous year's tax information, not the current one? That's what dd's Pell Grant for this year used. If it's true, that could help us a lot for next year because we'll be making more this year than last. Using last year's taxes will be opposite-of-good for us. great, one more thing to investigate. I thought it was always "open" in January! Gargupmph. J-rap
Yes, although most schools give you til March 1. Even then, if you don't have everything, you just fill out what you can and update when you can. I actually was not able to fill ours out until August this year, and it worked out fine. (I had been in touch with the admissions office about it and they knew what was going on.)
Lolly
Wait, WHAAAT? Will this happen this year or next???! http://www.nola.com/politics/index.ssf/2015/09/white_house_changing_fafsa_pro.html This article says it will start for those entering fall 2017. It also says that you CAN use the previous year's tax information. I wonder if this is a choice. It would be very beneficial to many people, but quite hurtful to others.
elegantlion
I usually do it in Jan. For our school, it must be complete by March 1 to apply for scholarships.
TravelingChris
We just estimated taxes. We still don't have taxes done. Hopefully we will have an easier time next tax season.
MerryAtHope
Hadn't heard about moving the date up to October. Certainly would be easier to just do the forms once with the previous year's tax info than to file quick in January with estimates and then have to update after filing.
