I know it's probably not very articulate or erudite of me, but it's just a very convenient, go-to word that pretty much autovivicated into our culture at around the time I was in high school, so it's a permanent fixture in my lexicon, sorry. :P I finished another painting! The Book of the Dun Cow by Walter Wangerin, Jr. If all or most your kids participate in read-aloud time, that is a perfect choice. You might find it at the public library, and you can usually find super cheap used copies on abebooks.com. This is the book that brought life back to story time for me. ETA: there is some implied violence and deep sadness which involves the killing/death of baby chickens (chickens are the main characters) so you might want to pre-read to see how you want to handle those portions.

MarkW
Also, being an IT guy and an on again, off again web and forum admin, I seriously contest the idea that the language on a forum platform invites a particular type or any spam at all. Spam is everywhere. It comes down to the security (and obscurity) of your forum software more than anything else. I had a custom forum that I ran for almost 20 years. It used FRAMES it was so old. FRAMES (this means the browser window was split into multiple sub windows which each loaded a separate web page designed to fit the shape and size of that subwindow. They load and refresh independently). Anyway, frames were eventually deprecated in favor of AJAX and other, better, newer things. My point is that our layout and software were so archaic that spam bots simply couldn't cope and frequently tried, but utterly failed, to post anything pretty much ever. It was amusing reading the logs, though. :)

In my experience, people who manually enter spam (excluding mentally ill people who rave about political conspiracies and the illuminati and such) are extremely rare. It's almost all bots. I've moderated and administered forums with NO rules about language whatsoever and a VERY liberal attitude about free speech. You'd probably be shocked at the things that got posted there. Literally nearly zero spam. I'm not saying that this forum should be full of potty language, and I'm sure saying it invites spam is a nice way of saying "please just don't do it", but I just don't think this is true. So there! Professormom
Tsuga, I agree that you need to hang here and recuperate. I love so many things about this board, but I think there are just enough here who really relish the anonymity and the ability to just say what you are thinking without the appropriate filters that come with face to face conversations with people you have to interact with on a daily basis. I see it across the board, right or left, atheist or Christian. My theory is that it is a personality thing and some people can just be jerks... Like in real life. I watch threads and am AMAZED sometimes at what people respond with or how people take a response. It's like being in bizarro world. But then, there is so much good here too, which is why I stay. And our ITT family of course:-) Point being, dear girl, you have a big heart to be putting so much thought and care into your interactions with your step kids. I had an awful step experience my entire childhood. More than one stepmother, crummy people. I pulled out of the situation as soon as I could and luckily don't deal with it anymore. That decision has brought me much peace. But, I have also seen situations where it really works and people are enriched by those relationships. I think one thing to remember is that kids in that position almost ALWAYS hold on to hope that their core family will reunite. It is heartbreaking for them to think otherwise. So they may not be rejecting you, so much as their crummy situation. That being said, it's your house too, and you are absolutely entitled to basic civility and respect. I don't know that I have advice, and I know this isn't that thread, but I just wanted to encourage you reiterate that you are safe here :grouphug:
Openhearted
I guess we are on fall break this week. I hadn't planned a break, but that seems to be the way it is working out. Monday: done absolutely nothing. R&R from last minute cleaning and b'day party. Oh, we learned about the effects of pepper spray.:D Tuesday: Homeschool hike, which turned out to be only those in my care and vehicle. Wednesday(today): The twins went with Dh to watch some construction work at my BIL's. Bulldozers and dump trucks. I have to take my mom to the Dr. We still have, Thursday and Friday, of course. We might get some actual schoolwork done tomorrow, but Friday we have to do some shopping.:( An almost hour drive one-way to get shoes. #ihateshopping

Speaking as the husband of a nurse and a long time healthcare system employee, I can't help but pipe up and tell you that unless the mask you're wearing is N95 respirator grade and a proper fit, it won't do much to protect you from his cold. It is much more effective for your son to wear a mask (even if it's not N95 grade) than for you to wear one. And of course, hand hygeine (both yours and his) are instrumental, as well as taking care not to touch your eyes, nose, etc unless you have freshly washed hands. #soapbox EDIT - oh wait I'm supposed to do something here.
