DragonFaerie
DS wants to play Minecraft but I can't figure out where/how to get it. I know it's an app on his phone, but he wants to be able to play on his computer. Is it available as computer software or something? Where/how do we get it? Amazon doesn't seem to have anything, and when I google it, I get some site with UK pricing.
FriedClams
You buy it online. The full version (and I'd recommend it and buying it once ) is about $26. It's a download. Pick your user name wisely - apparently it's a big deal of you're a kid and it can't be changed. :-)

Amazon doesn't seem to have anything, and when I google it, I get some site with UK pricing. It is a UK based game. You buy it online. Yes, it shows a UK price, but it will be converted automatically by your card. If you want to give it as a gift, then there are cards you can buy in stores (Target, Game Stop, etc). athomeontheprairie
Once downloaded, does it need internet access to play?
Mrs Mungo
Once downloaded, does it need internet access to play? My understanding (from talking to ds) is that you have to login at least the first time. After that, you could play offline, if you want. But, the modes where you play with other people (like capture the flag) will only work online.
mommaduck
It's well worth the $26. There are mods that can be added, online game play with others, offline play, and free upgrades. And you can have a variety of worlds (so the family can all play under one account). There is always something new to discover, learn, and do. Kim in Appalachia
I have a question, but I think I know the answer. If I have 4 kids who want to play, each wanting his or her own user name, then do I have to buy 4 games? I'm assuming so, since it's an online thing, but I'd thought I'd ask. My kids may get it for Christmas.
DragonFaerie
And can it be played on more than one computer? If it's a download, I would guess not. But if it's online, then it would work on more than one. Which is it?

Scarlett
I think it is one of the best values out there. The two times I've bought it my banks fraud unit called to verify because it is uk based.

mytwomonkeys
This thread has me feeling old. What exactly IS minecraft? I'm certain my son would correct me, but I'd say it is like a Lego world video game thingy. You build your world, house, and other stuff I don't know about :)

mommaduck
It's for ALL ages. My two year old watches, but the 5, 7, 10, 12, 13, 15, 17yr olds, and I all play it. The two oldest boys have accounts and we play under their usernames. http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Minecraft_Wiki
Mnemosyne
Lol. Great description. What ages is this typically for? I have an almost 8yo. I play it. >.> Any age that would enjoy Lego would probably enjoy MC. You build things with 'blocks', have an option of hostile 'mobs' (bad guys) or play on peaceful... you mine and gather resources to build or you play in creative mode where everything is at your fingertips. I like it because even at my age there is stuff that challenges me - redstone has taught me so much about engineering and electronics, for example. You can build simple dirt shacks or mansions out of diamond, or you can just explore.
lovinmomma
Sounds very interesting! I'll have to put this in my back pocket for future presents.
CupOCoffee
I have often wondered whether this is something my two would get into. The explanation here is making me revisit the idea. It seems like the price is reasonable and we could get a copy for each of the laptops. It's going on the "maybe get this for Christmas" list. ~coffee~
Acorn
My kids have built a pretty cool world in creative mode. I think that they are using a free demo. We did not want them using the Internet yet.
DragonFaerie
Thanks for the info, everyone! I'm definitely going to see about this for DS. Between Christmas and his birthday in February and me and his dad and grandparents, surely somebody can get it for him. Thanks again!
