My 3rd grader used K12 Literature through the virtual academy. Below was the list that he had to choose from. He was unhappy for a few minutes over there being more "girl" books than "boy" books. He did those independently. Hubby also did Homer's Odyssey with them as well as Swiss Family Robinson. Hubby also did poetry by Edgar Allan Poe with them.

How many of the books on this list were they expected to read?

I'm just having my third grader pick a book of decent quality that he feels like reading. He is currently reading one of the books from the Boys of Wartime series and loves it. But we don't have a set program or curriculum for reading. If there's something specific I want him to read (like that goes along well with our history studies, for instance), I'll assign it, but otherwise, he generally chooses.

I have a reading list, and DD gets to pick a "free reading" book, which is anything allowed in the house (no Junie B. Jones, for example) that she hasn't already read. I can't recall all the books she read this year because the list is elsewhere but I'll post what I can recall. Basically, I looked at a bunch of reading lists and chose the books I thought would be best based on the recommendations and my preferences. I usually narrow it down to a couple of books and let her pick. I occasionally ask her questions about the books to check her understanding and enjoyment.

Assigned:

Igraine the Brave

Hachiko Waits

The Chocolate Touch

The Invisible Dog

Magic Treehouse Research Guides (Knights, Ancient Rome, Mummies and a couple of others)

One Small Square (Backyard, Pond, Rainforest, Arctic Tundra)

Stuart Little

Charlotte's Web

Bambi

The Magical Monarch of Mo

The Golden Fleece

Chosen for free reading:

Magic Treehouse 1-12

The Great American Mousical

Big Susan

Pippi in the South Seas

Twig

The Milly-Molly-Mandy Storybook

Mad About Madeline

Eloise: The Ultimate Edition (she really likes the giant story book collections)

I also started having her read along to some audiobooks, so she's currently following along with The Wind in the Willows and Treasure Island.

What have you done, or are you going to be doing, for your 3rd grader for reading? Do you have a reading list? Do you use a program of some kind? I just would love to hear some feedback on what others do.

Thanks!

We do both.

1. Here is the required reading list I used for dd this year for 3rd grade:

Little House on the Prairie

Freckle Juice

Frindle

A Mouse Called Wolf

The Secret School

The Moffats

Ginger Pye

Henry and Ribsy

Nim's Island

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

The Happy Hollisters

In Grandma's Attic

Five Little Peppers and How They Grew

The Children of Noisy Village

Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator

Emily's Runaway Imagination

I got the book descriptions of each book from Amazon and copy and pasted them along with the book title into a Word document. I let her choose which book she wanted to read next from the list using the book description to see what sounded good. She would read for 20 minutes from the book. On the last school day of the week, we'd do a light discussion of what she read. (What did you think would happen here? Is this character a good person? Why? Where is this book set? etc.). Lots of times we discussed the books while eating lunch or at supper time.

Of course, she also read books that she picked on her own from the library (lots of American Girl and Nancy Drew!), but these books were her required reading list.

2. Our literature program is K12 Literature 3. I do not use it online, but I bought the Teacher Manual, Student Book, and readers very cheaply in perfect used condition from Amazon. This is a very easy program to use and only takes us about 15 minutes a day. I have my dd read the selections out loud to me so that she can practice her oral reading and I can catch any mispronunciations.

HTH.

I have my boys read aloud to me from a book I picked daily. Other than that, though, I let mine chose their books--from our own books and from library books. Generally, my boys read a lot on their own. I do have one that goes in spurts. If I notice he's not reading much on his own for whatever reason, I have set a formal reading time occasionally. I still let him pick what he reads for that set time.

I have a great home library, which I have been creating over the last few years. I let my DS8 pick a book, then I pick a book. I pick ones he wouldn't chose but I hope he will enjoy. He picks them based on how easy they look to read :)

I wrote up a list for my DD to choose from. I expect her to read about 9-10 of them overcchio the year (we school Jan - Dec). She's read: Alice in Wonderland, The Borrowers, The Twenty-One Balloons, Ajax (wasn't originally on the list but she asked for it), and is currently reading Wind in the Willows. So she's pretty well on track to hit the 9/10 number by December.

Some others on the list:

The Enchanted Castle

Many Moons

The Little Prince

A Wrinkle in Time

Hitty, Her first hundred years

A Little Princess

Black Beauty.

If you have an assigned list of books, how do you discuss them? Do you use study guides, or come up with your own questions? I see such a large variety of study guides! Some that delve into themes, some that are just checking comprehension, some have a lot of output, some have very little...

I am listening in as well -- mine will be in 2nd grade and while I have planned out everything else, literature and writing are still percolating in my brain!

I had a required reading list and the kids had to pick one book a month from it.

Some hits from our list that I didn't see on the lists above included...

Where the Mountain Meets the Moon

Frindle

Jenny and the Cat Club (a really easy pick)

Tornado (another really easy one)

Paddle to the Sea

Because of Winn-Dixie

A few of the books people listed, like A Wrinkle in Time and Tuck Everlasting, are books I think of as slightly older - fifth or sixth grade books. But, of course, they're not inappropriate and every kid should read at their own level.

We also just discuss the books. I sometimes choose our copywork/dictation passage from it as well.
