Mom2OandE
I have both books sitting on my desk. Would they be appropriate or 9 years olds for a read aloud? Thanks.
happypamama
I don't know about Life of Pi (never read it), but I think The Hobbit definitely would be a great read-aloud for that age!
Stacia
Imo, The Hobbit would be an ok read-aloud for 9yos. Life of Pi would not. (I've read both books.)

Slartibartfast
Life of Pi is scary, it looks whimsical but it is not. Even if one doesn't read the end bit I don't think it would be appropriate for a 9 year old. The Hobbit is perfect for reading aloud to kids. Lori D.
Life of Pi is not an adventure book or just a survival story. It is an adult book, which uses the basic plot of shipwreck to explore, at a complex and mature level, philosophy and concepts of religious beliefs, identity, and the nature of man. There are some psychologically disturbing images (at least they were for this adult!) in the book as well. My recommendation is that the book would be best understood by adults, and possibly very mature older teens. The Hobbit is a great read aloud for a 9yo. It is a fantasy adventure story, written with humor and a light touch, with encounters with trolls, goblins, giant spiders and a dragon. Enjoy! :) Just my book review for the day! ;) Warmest regards, Lori D.
catz
Life of Pi sounds so interesting! Thanks for the suggestion. ;) LOL - I know many here did not like Life of Pi, but I did. So did the older kid here just this fall (he turned 12 last week). He has always been old for age (and is accelerated across the boards). EKS
The Hobbit yes. Life of Pi no.

He has always been old for age (and is accelerated across the boards). I did rail about Life of Pi but I do think Life of Pi was a good book, I think it was beautifully written and I did enjoy it. I wasn't entirely prepared for the book to be horrific which is why it was so disconcerting. I agree with Lori D. I would no more hand a child Life of Pi than I would Lord of the Flies. If I thought someone was old enough for Lord of the Flies I would let them read Life of Pi.
ccolopy
The Hobbit yes. Life of Pi no. :iagree: My nephews read (and loved) Life of Pi in high school, but I think even then would have been too early for some kids. Both of my children have read and enjoyed The Hobbit. Going to add that to his must read list this year!
regentrude
Hobbit- yes, great. Life of Pi- absolutely not. (It is one of DD's favorite books, she read it as a very mature 14 y/o. Not suitable for a 9 y/o)
Connections
Not that you need more recommendations but, read the Hobbit! It is excellent! (I myself am finally getting to the Lord of the Rings trilogy and am trying to squeeze reading time in b/c I must find out what happens next!) I was totally unprepared for what I encountered. It really is a good book, but I think you need to be prepared for what you're getting yourself into. And I don't think it's appropriate for children. Stacia
FYI, there was some discussion of Life of Pi recently in this thread: http://forums.welltrainedmind.com/showthread.php?t=436609
Farrar
I don't think Life of Pi is inappropriate per se. But it's definitely something I would personally wait on.

NOT for a 9-year-old.
Mom2OandE
Thank you everyone so much! We will start the Hobbit Monday and I will start Life of Pi for myself this weekend. So glad I asked before I dove into that one.
Laura Corin
Not Life of Pi. Very distressing book. Hobbit should be fine. Laura
