Jeanne in MN
I found these at a homeschool conference and they were written by a then 16 yo homeschool girl who loves horses. She was inspired to write the series after seeing wild horses or a wild horse reserve in SD. They are called The Mighty Stallion series and they each book is about the descendent(s) of the horse(s) in the book before. I believe they also go through history and pick up historical events. Like her next book will take place during the Civil War. Here's the link to her website: http://www.epicscrolls.com/products.htm I haven't been able to find them available on-line and have had to buy them through her website. WTMCassandra
I'm not the OP, but thanks so much for this suggestion! I have a horse-mad 11yo with a birthday coming up in October. I tried to rep you but I'm out of rep for today.

Ellie
My DD says: The Black Stallion series Black Beauty The Little White Horse (more of a fairy tale) Now, see, I first read the Little White Horse long ago because the word "horse" was in the title, but it isn't a horse book at all. (And, FTR, I just finished reading it again, for the umpteenth time, a couple of months ago. It's a copy I found on e-bay that was printed in England and actually has some color pictures. Very kewl.) I would recommend it; in fact, it's one of the top three titles on my list (along with the Chestry Oak and Understood Betsy) of books that every person in the world should read:D. It just isn't actually a horse book.
Soph the vet
The Practical Horsekeeping Guide to Horse Husbandry or some title similar to that. If she loves horse stories then she will probably love to learn all about taking care of horses. Just beware that she will want a horse after reading books like this! Chris in VA
Soph is so so right! I read my Stable Management guide about a thousand times as a young teen! National Velvet is a great book, too--but I'd read it aloud for an eight, because of dialogue and cultural references. Skip the movies. The Horsemasters is another favorite. In this wonderful story, a young lady just out of high school spends the summer studying at a riding school in England. She takes their Horsemaster course (based on a real course) and learns how to become a riding instructor. It's really a fun story.
kalanamak
She really enjoyed the Marguerite Henry books. What else would you recommend? Indian Paint by Glenn Balch Sort of like Island of the Blue Dolphin, but a boy left behind who befriends a horse rather than a dog. I read it several times at age 9. Come on Seabiscuit by Ralph Moody. This one is very M. Henry-ish
Ellie
Dorothy Lyon wrote a bunch of horse books. They're old, and very sentimental, but they're harmless, lol. Only a couple are sequels. They have names like Silver Birch, Harlequin Hullabaloo, Dark Sunshine, Golden Sovereign, Copper Khan. You might still be able to find them in libraries. kalanamak
Oh, and for possibly spreading out from horses to other animals, Farley Mowat's books about owls...I think Owls in the Family...and his Dog Who Wouldn't Be are good options.
HollyinNNV
I loved Trixie Belden books growing up. Not really a horse series, but the girls in the series love their horses. Holly

shalom22
I was one of those horse crazy girls once. I collected books about horses. My favorites were: Walter Farley, C.W. Anderson, Mary O'hara, and Marguerite Henry. I see now that there are more Farley's writing horse stories also. But my most favorite to read over and over were the Walter Farley books about the Black Stallion.
